MARVEL TEAMS WITH THE MILITARY FOR A SECOND COMIC

Following up on their first comic released in May, Marvel will again create a custom comic for the US Military, this time featuring the New Avengers and other characters.

The story, entitled “Pot of Gold” features a team of heroes facing down “The Disruptor,” a cyborg who’s angling to steal the Army and Air Force Exchange Service’s annual Morale, Welfare and Recreation dividend. The comic, available exclusively at AAFES facilities, is due in United States AAFES stores in early October, and overseas facilities in November.

From the AAFES release: “Due to limited availability, AAFES’ Chief of Corporate Communications Lt. Col. Debra Pressley doesn’t expect copies of the new comic to stay for long. “The collector community went wild when Marvel and AAFES unveiled ‘The New Avengers’ earlier this year,” said Pressley. “I expect ‘Pot of Gold’ to be sought after just as much, if not more than the first one.”
Because of the highly collectible nature of the comic and the anticipated demand, AAFES officials advise that the comic book is available on a first-come, first-served basis. “When they’re gone, they’re gone,” said Pressley.””

Marvel’s first comic for the AAFES saw over one million copies produced, and led to a reception with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld upon its release.

Is there a chance that both issues will make it into regular Marvel Comic Book or a Trade, so that all Marvel Fans have a chance to get a look at the stories ? Fascinating is the cover, it shows Thor with the New Avengers, it would be interesting to discover how Thor returned from Walhalla.

As with any custom comic, I wouldn't count on its storyline being related to current continuity. At least that's how I explain the years-long absence of the Radio Shack kids from the DCU.

How long have you been waiting to use the kernel of sheer comics/comic brilliance Matt?

Cause that was funny stuff right there.

Is there any word on the creative team? Bendis wrote the last one, but who's doing this?

I'm hoping this trend continues long enough to see the Marvel Heroes versus Capitol Hill.

Was that a problem with the other special earlier this year?

Good form Marvel. This is just a cool thing to do.

Very cool move by Marvel. It'd be fun to get a hold of one (my dad works down at Fort McPherson here in GA), but I doubt they'll send any down here mainly cuz this base is gonna be closed. Oh well!

Another great move, though the story sounds a little lame!

I bought a copy of the original special through eBay (I'm in Canada, so that's my way of supporting the troops) and I'll definitely want to get this one.

Why are people paying a premium for the one that came out earlier this year? More than a million copies were produced. That's more than five times the production run of the biggest sellers from the past year. It's about as rare as X-Force #1.

Those were my exact same thoughts, particularly the second one when I read the cyborg's name and the plot. Gah.

Cool beans for the AAFES.

BUT

Great they brought back Thor. Just keep that washed up-olde speaking-idiot out of the New Avengers proper book.

More Sentry. More Spider-Woman. Less characters whose best and most storied days were when i was 5 years old.

The biggest PR Thor gets is his appearences on Conan Obrien, a dipiction that is anything but flattering...

AAFES just needs to stock New Avengers through Diamond. While these special "we support you" books are nice and cool, I'm sure Military comic fans want to find how who the heck Ronin is as much as we all do.

Not a lot of them made it up to where I'm at, but there were unholy buttloads in Kuwait. I managed to pick up four or five of them over the course of a few months.

I would love it if we got comics regularly. The PX usually stocks random issues several months after they come out. In my time here I've seen one issue of Daredevil, four or five of Hulk, a couple Fantastic Four, one Birds of Prey, and maybe one or two issues of Wolverine stocked at the PX. So I just have to wait until I'm home to read my books.

Is there such as a thing as good custom/charity/product tie-in comics? (although I do have a small soft-spot for the Nesquik Bunny and Kool-Aid Man comics)

The first one was pretty good, except that the metaphor at work was a little obvious. It was a solid one-shot story that was semi-relevant to solidier on duty.

Are you somehow suggesting that all of those Hostess Fruit Snack comics were out of continuity? I'm never buying another Marvel comic again!

Well they weren't all distributed domestically, didn't make it to retail outlets and were only available for sale to the military.

How else do you expect people who don't know anyone in the Army to get one?
