SDCC PIE UPDATE: NO PIE @ THE IMAGE BOOTH

Press Release

Image ComicsŪ is NOT bringing pie to its fans in San Diego.

The Ultimate SDCC giveaway hit a snag. Though the Image Comics giveaway was targeted to fans, the Convention Center's policy about food giveaways on the convention floor made it fiscally impossible to bring the delicious Home Run PiesŪ to the show.

"In order to give away free pie to our fans, the Convention Center wanted to charge us $500 a day plus a dollar per pie. And these are pies that retail at four for a dollar," Image publisher, Erik Larsen said. "They wanted to charge us four times the retail price of these pies so that we could give them away. That's $6500 to give away the 4000 pies that we wanted to share with our fans."

"The staff at the San Diego Comic Con has been more than helpful and, considering that these are delicious Home Run PiesŪ, more than a little enthusiastic about the prospect of sampling some of the pies themselves. We have no reservations about dealing with them or setting up at the show, this is a purely Convention Center issue."

To keep its end of the bargain with the fans, Image Comics is actively seeking another venue to get the pies out to its loyal readers.

"We appreciate the understanding and support of our fans and we're making every effort to bring them our favorite taste treat."

Stop by the Image Comics island of booths and check out the finest and most diverse selection of comic books and graphic novels to be had.

Maybe they could give fans a quarter to buy their own pies...

Yeah, what comic book fans need is pies.

Some jackass stuffing his face with those nasty things, dropping cumbs and puple sludge on his half-assed Han Solo costume is just what I need to see to make my weekend complete.

And before everyone gets all up in arms- take a look around, it's not uncommon, not at all.

Maybe they should have promised to have punch with the pie?

No, it's not, but sadly, by your post, neither is someone mocking another person whom he or she feels is in someway inferior to them.

Knock it off.

All told, I prefer the guy in the Han Solo outfit rather than the one pointing and laughing at others and trying to make themselves feel better about their own self-image or some other collection of nerves in their noggin by making fun of someone else.

...Actually, as someone who's had a Home Run Pie before, and was rather pleased with the result *and* the sugar buzz, what Image needs to do is what Dell did one year when some idiot(*) manager at a local convention hall tried to pull the same stunt in order to "protect the concession vendors" and their overpriced stale offerings: they went across the street to possibly the oldest burger & shake joint in the world, explained the situation, and gave out the blintzes they'd intended to give away there. Both the burger joint and Dell benefitted from it, and the local news media chewed the Convention Center's manager a new a'sshol'e. Especially after it was discovered he'd tried to extend that food ban to the free Life Savers every booth had set up because the concessioneers were *selling* them.

...Having never been to SDCC - much to T** G*******'s relief, natch - are there any burger joints nearby that would benefit from some sort of joint venture? THey could sort of turn it into a "Free Comic Book" type of event that, if handled properly *and* the news media were cultivated into the proper mindset, could help reverse the extortion the con-job center is pulling.

(*) who no longer works for the CoA, as he got fired two days after pulling this s'hit.

(Filtering colorful metaphors, Matty? That's almost as bad as not allowing Image to give away pies for free! :-P)

...Actually, he probably *did* mean it humorously. However, I wonder what sort of response he'd gotten if he'd said something along the lines of "well, what's more important isn't that the fangeeks get their pies, but that they at least bathe before arriving, and make damn sure they use deodorant before entering the building!"

,,,Don't laugh, kids - I've been to quite a few conventions where it's obvious that one of the reasons some fanboys live in mom's basement is that mom would prefer to keep the smell out of the rest of the house as much as possible. It can really get bad enough to the point where you toss your overpriced stale nachos and flat cokes. In fact, Matty? Didn't we have a thread on this topic after a previous SDCC where the AC went out, or something like that?

If they have the pies allready they should just hand them out in the morning to the people in line with a note saying "Come by our booth" or something.

That way people will still get the pies and they will feel good about Image for the delicious treat

Actually, that would might still get into trouble with the convention center (the line is on convention center grounds). It would certainly run afoul of Comic-Con exhibitor rules against distributing giveaways to folks in the line or in any other part of the convention away from the booth (which is a particularly understandable concern when it comes to the line, as keeping a ruly queue can be tough enough without having everyone trying to push toward the free stuff.)

A couple of weeks back, Augie De Bleah Jr. ripped into a poster for having the name Spider-Bob (geeky name, I agree, but we are on a comics board), and did the defender of the weak Matt Brady say a damn thing to him? Of course not. In fact, when I posted to augie (and said, in so many words) that he could shove his mocking of Spider-bob's name (espcially coming from someone who's name is Augie), Matty boy deleted my post (as to not hurt poor augie's sensitive nature, I guess), while his mocking was neither deleted nor commented on.

Actually, the pies were four-for-a-dollar. That's 25 cents each, not $4 each.

Didn't Marvel have some similar difficulties a while back with a plan to give away cookies to attendees?

get off your high horse. you make it sound like some human rights violation insted of something that was mildly inappropriate, which is what it was.....maybe if you would of said something like "lets keep it respectful people"you wouldent have come across as someone who never made a mistake. (btw you have the best comic news website on the web, which im sure is mostly your doing)

I'm sure it is, if I had it. What I do have is a board with nearly 14,000 members, thousands of threads, and a limited time during which I can enforce the rules. I can't say I remember specificlaly what you're talking about, but I surely would have had you reported it, as i've asked people to do dozens of times.

And yes, even Augie would've gotten yelled at.

mocking someone because they're different in an atempt to make oneself feel better about themselves is something I rarely see as "mildly inappropriate," given my years on this site, and seeing what one "mildly inappropriate" comment usually leads to. Human rights violation? Not hardly, but a sad commentary on the poster's life who felt the need to insult someone else? You betcha.

And, had I not said anything, sometime later, when I would've pointed out someone doing the same, there would've been someone saying, "there was this guy who made fun of teh Han Solo dude at SDCC, and you did nothing! Not fair!"

Lose some, lose some.

Amen. When did telling a joke meaning anything other than trying to make a joke?

How do you all know I'm not that guy (the pie eating Han Solo that is)?

Lighten up.

I seem to recall a rather humerous Simpsons eposide involving Comic Book Guy and diet Mr. Pibb.

Oh. hey would I have incurred less wrath had I said:
"Image ought to use save the pie money and invest it in something that will make their books come when then say they will." And people bitch about Marvel, please."

We don't have the pies yet -- and we won't until we determine where we're actually rolling the pies out. We'd hoped to do the promotion in Baltimore, but it looks like that's a problem for the fine folks at Horizon Foods, so we'll see. Whatever the case, Erik still did an awesome ad for the pies that should be appearing in various Image titles any day now and we still love Home Run Pies. I'm going to have one right now, in fact.

Had I made a comment about a specific person, I might see where it was hurtful. But a generic comment aimed at a 'type' rather than a actually person ought to be laughed at.

The funniest things are the true ones. And if you can't laugh at yourself then you have as big a problem as someone who derives pleasure in mocking others.

And if you happen to be at a comic convetion, in a costume and eating a free fried pie and don't see the humor in that then you really have a problem.

You should've just ended it there, dude. The funny is in the simplicity. The rest of your post was just masturbation.

I can't make it this year, but I was out there last year and I gotta tell you, by Saturday afternoon the whole place smelled like an onion burger.

Still, a fruit pie woulda been a nice touch. So long as they gave out little handy-wipes so as not to get the fried pie finger grease all over the comics and such.
