KIRBY MUSEUM LAUNCHES

Taking the opportunity of what would have been Jack Kirby’s 88th birthday, The Jack Kirby Museum & Research Center debuted its online presence yesterday, August 28th.

As the Center originally announced in its Mission Statement:

Mission Statement:
The Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center is organized exclusively for educational purposes; more specifically, to promote and encourage the study, understanding, preservation and appreciation of the work of Jack Kirby by:

* illustrating the scope of Kirby's multi-faceted career,
* communicating the stories, inspirations and influences of Jack Kirby,
* celebrating the life of Jack Kirby and his creations, and
* building understanding of comicbooks and comicbook creators.

To this end, the Museum will sponsor and otherwise support study, teaching, conferences, discussion groups, exhibitions, displays, publications and cinematic, theatrical or multimedia productions.

Currently, a slice of the JKM&RC’s database is online, as well as a videotaped Kirby interview regarding a story by Kirby in Our Fighting Forces #191, a Link Thorne: Flying Fool story as well as Mark Evanier’s amended Kirby biography from Kirby Unleashed.

From the Museum’s statement: Coming soon, we'll have a Fantastic Four exhibit with significant contributions from Tom Morehouse and a Captain America presentation by Mark Badger.

The Kirby Museum's long-term plans include a major traveling retrospective in 2007, a documentary, and more. We can't do this without your help. Please consider becoming a member of the Museum to foster the development of these programs. We are not yet a U.S. 501(c)3 corporation, so U.S. taxpayers' dues is not tax-deductible, but we still need your support.

It's a great start, and I wish nothing but the best for the museum curators, and Jack Kirby's family and friends. I'll be mailing out my annual membership at the end of the week. I hope all of Kirby's fans here, and fans of artists like Tom Scioli, who owe soooooo much to Jack Kirby, will do the same. In fact, if every comic book artist who is currently working doesn't contribute to the museum, it would be a "crime" against comic book history.

I've had an appreciation for Kirby's work for several years now. The amount of memorable characters that he created and co-created have made such an impact in both Marvel and DC. It's great to see a somewhat official website now sharing that appreciation to other comic book fans.

I remember years ago, a friend of mine had this great Jack Kirby hardcover book. It was about the size of those encyclopedia-type books or the Alex Ross: Mythology. It was great because there was a full page spread of each character that Kirby had either created or helped co-create. Not sure how new the pieces of art were but they certainly looked relatively new. Does anyone know if the book is still in print or where I might be able to find it? Anyone even know what I'm talking about?

Red face

It is a start. Really liked the Lockjaw the Alligator story.

Many of today's girly-man artists could take a page from Kirby's book. While you hear them whine and blow deadlines Kirby sat at his board and hammered out F.F. after F.F.

Kirby was from the old school and knew not only how to make deadlines but do it in style.

So put that inyour cap and smoke it you girly-man-can't make a monthly come out on time artists out there.

Actually should I really talk? I can barely draw a stick figure!

Then again I am not making upteen thousands of people wait months on end for the next issue.

By the way I aint noting anyone in particuallar just noting the trend.,

Happy days for me...

That Flying Fool story is beautiful - my favorite period of Kirby's art.
