TOKYOPOP OEL: AMY HADLEY & FOOL'S GOLD

by Benjamin Ong Pang Kean

Oh, don’t be a pyrite (read on to find out what it means) and pick up Amy Reeder Hadley’s Fool’s Gold from TOKYOPOP in June.

Fool’s Gold has it all: love, fashion, deceit, labels, growing up, and the uncertainty of human nature. Just the right ingredients for those of you who love to read Vogue, W, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE and Glamour.

Seriously, how many fashion manga are there out there anyway? After all, according to TOKYOPOP editor Lillian Diaz-Przybyl, “in shojo-land, clothes play a pretty big role in establishing character and making a series cool and attractive. In comes Amy Reeder Hadley with Fool's Gold. Amy told me that she set out to do a modern version of the classic Pride and Prejudice, but things changed along the way, and we got a dash of Emma thrown in for good measure. Not that I'm complaining, mind you!”

Hee, thanks, guys! Wow, I caught this pretty quickly, which is good! Thought I'd post a more updated cover pic in case you're interested. That gold text title was a very rough idea long before I ever drew the cover or figured out a color scheme. TOKYOPOP's done a great job tweaking it to this:

Always interested in seeing a great-looking cover get even better!

Keep up the superb work. It artists like you that make me say "Marvel what?" and "DC who?"

Looks like another great book from Tokyopop's Amerimanga stuff. I don't understand why so many people are shying away from these works. I find them far and away better than a good chunk of the Japenese/Korean work making it to these shores.

And the art... wow. I'm thinking this book will be worth it for that alone.

Wow, nice to hear all this!! I'm especially glad to hear that you guys like the art, since the pages here are from my first chapter, and I feel that I've gotten a bit better since then (so of course in classic artist fashion I loathe my old stuff).

Ooo, and don't forget that you can preview the first three chapters (90 pages--HALF of book one) at TOKYOPOP's Manga Online ! There's probably enough to see whether the story's worth your time
