ALL STAR BATMAN & ROBIN #4 TO FEATURE 6-PAGE BATCAVE FOLDOUT
Press Release
ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER #4, the next issue of the blockbuster series written by Frank Miller and illustrated by Jim Lee & Scott Williams, will feature an incredible 6-page foldout of the Batcave. This amazing illustration will give readers a view of Batman's underground lair in unprecedented detail.
"As always, the madness started with Frank Miller's script," says Lee. "Always looking for new and exciting ways to frame sequences, Frank called for a 6-page spread of the Batcave. The trick for me was to top the previous shot of the Batcave I had done in Hush. Simply working on six pages made it a challenge because of the dimensions; when a spread is so much wider than it is tall, the art runs the risk of looking like a mundane police lineup of objects in the Batcave. Flat. Small. Lifeless."
Lee continues, "Luckily, there's always a way of weaving method into the madness. To create depth, I spotted blacks and shadows on the immediate foreground elements to better pop them off the background. Multiple vanishing points helped create the sense of unending vastness that Frank envisioned for the new Batcave while canting the whole windscreen image with a slight upshot. A fisheye-lens angle helped complete the illusion of size and scope. In many ways, you have to compose the piece more as an abstract piece of art to keep it dynamic and interesting as your eye moves left to right, pulling in and out, taking in the individual parts and the whole all at once. And of course, we all prayed that the computer would be robust enough to handle the metafile for coloring this piece."
ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER #4 (NOV050225) is available for advance reorder and is scheduled to arrive in stores on March 22. Also scheduled to arrive in stores on that date is the ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER #4 VARIANT EDITION (NOV050226) featuring a cover by Frank Miller. Now no one will complain about how Miller would have over 8 panels per page. Now they'll complain that he's going to bring about the beginning of a new comic book gimmick:
One panel for an entire issue of a comic! Yes, it'll be a huge spread like those cliche times when someone wants to show you pictures of their grandkids!
You heard it here first, folks. Double sized comics? Foil covers? Alternate cover reprints?
You ain't seen nothin' yet.
Still, that sure is purty.

Awesome picture. But it does prove that Bruce Wayne has way too much money. He should take up a smaller hobby like playing Halo.

Two things..
I can only imagine how long this took for Jim to draw, and the amount of eye strain and back ache it caused him ontop of that. I will buy this just for the effort Mr.. Lee put into this.
Second ISSUE FOUR AND NOW THEY FINALLY GET TO THE BATCAVE!!!! IS MILLER MAKING FUN OF BENDIS LOL
holy taking your time...Batman!

I know Frank is struggling with this story of his, but what does it say about him that he needs to waste 6 pages of an issue on ONE SINGLE PICTURE.
Dont get me wrong, i'm still holding out hope that this story will all come together and we'll understand what he's upto. But with every passing issue im getting the feeling he doesnt actually know what he wants from this story and that he's only writing it because he's been paid a pile o' money. Good reason for him maybe, but if you want money, go do another Sin City film already, at least theres still proven material to work from in that.

That pic is sweet, and I love the various nods to the batman movies - the tank-like Batmobile that does indeed come in black, the bat-copter which I'm sure is equipped with bat shark-repellent, and the various warrior outfits in glass - one of whom is probably "king of the wicker people!". In between the first two armor cases, there's a large crane with a big metal spider attached to the line - I wonder what that would be for?
But as cool as that picture (and hopefully future poster) is - did it really have to take four issues just for the ride home from the circus to the batcave???

Valiant did something similar in Solar. The end of Solar #0 was the world largest panel (20 pages I think) by Barry Windsor Smith. It worked very well though because story wise, it was probably the most important panel they every produced.
