SERENITY #1 GOES BACK TO PRESS
Dark Horse announced Wednesday that Serenity #1, the first issue in the limited series based on Joss Whedon's upcoming film, has sold out at the publisher and Diamond and will go back to press and new printings that will be available in two weeks.
Dark Horse said it intends to fill backorders on the first print run with this new printings, but will allow retailers who don’t want their backorders filled that way to cancel them. The second printing will also be available for new orders. Issue #1 featured three covers, by John Cassaday, Bryan Hitch and J.G. Jones, respectively, and each cover will be reprinted as part of the new, second print run and can be individually ordered.
Written by Whedon and Brett Matthews, and illustrated by Will Conrad & Laura Martin, according to Diamond, “Serenity #1 finds Mal Reynolds and company in a familiar situation: broke, and on the wrong side of a number of very large firearms. Readers should expect cinematic action and offbeat characters in the Whedon mold, dynamically illustrated.”

Fun, entertaining, and strangely nostalgic - this is a great book, and, if the first issue is any indication, will fit in nicely in the Firefly-verse.

Well after the quick solicitation of the trade for Man With The Screaming Brain I've decided to just wait for the trade on this one.
By waiting for everything on movies and comics I'm watching/reading so much more anyway! (Same with video games also.) Patience and cheapness really is a virtue!

Actor Nathan Fillion aka Mal Reynolds, the lead in Firefly posted the following on the Firefly messagboard.
Sure gives a concise example of how crappy thieving retailers (E.G. Warp 1 Comics) are killing the Comics industry:
There should be some kinda award for this twat working in Warp 1 Comics for sheer Comic Book Guyness.
"It is times like these that I feel like Malcolm Reynolds. This is something that would surely get you kicked into an engine. I just went to a comic store to purchase the Serenity comic for my mom. The sweetheart that she is, gave her issues (with her favorite character on the front) to relatives who were having trouble tracking one down. Please bear in mind that Canada is a wondrous place where the service industry is polite and helpful, and that this experience is not the norm. The store I chose, which shall remain nameless (Warp 1 Comics), at an undisclosed location (just off Whyte Ave), has the singlemost sanctimonious, condescending, dishonest a$$hole I've had the misfortune of meeting. My brother and I called ahead to find out they had one issue left, but upon arriving, found out they are gouging people $20 bucks for the damned thing! "That's what they're worth." he sneered at me. I asked him to show me a listing of some sort to back it up. "Well, I just know what I paid Dark Horse for it." He wouldn't show me that, either. I am aware that Dark Horse wasn't expecting these books to sell as well as they are, and that they are going into a second printing, but I just picked up three of them two days ago at cover price at another store. My brother piped up with a, "What an interesting attitude you have." Let me tell you folks, this fella had an attitude, and a smirk that you wanted to knock off his face with a baseball bat dipped in dog poop. Of course, my brother couldn't help letting this guy know who he was trying to hose by holding the issue next to my face. "This guy look familliar? This isn't some JoJo off the street! He knows what he's talking about!" Check this out- the reply of this crap-catcher, who shall remain nameless (Darryl) was, (and imagine a dullards voice- how we make people we don't like sound in a story) "Well, then you can call Joss Whedon and ask him." I had to tell this purplebelly that I was being sarcastic when I thanked him for his excellent service, and I don't think he knew what sanctimonious meant!
Wouldn't a smart business man ask me to sign an issue and sell me one at a fair price? Wouldn't that fetch a prettier penny than ripping me off for one issue? Congratulations, dude! You are now on the Browncoat $hitlist.
Never have I tried to wield power in this way, but if being Malcolm Reynolds has taught me anything, it's to follow my over-developed sense of vengeance. BOYCOTT WARP ONE COMICS! If you are in the neighborhood, drop by to tell "the Buttress" that Browncoats don't take $hit from anyone. Tell your friends not to shop there, and lock 'em in the airlock if they do. Copy this post and e-mail it to fellow Edmontonians. Bump it to keep it alive.
Thank you. Thank you for letting me rant. If you feel I'm overboard, please feel free to, as Joss would say, contemplate silently.
The Captain
Edited to be less cruel, and to mention how wonderfully my dear mom was treated at HAPPY HARBOR. Thank you, staff and owners at Happy Harbor. You made my mom's day. Turns out, Warp One tried to hose her, too, by telling her that the Jayne covered issue was a rarity. Love you, Adam B. You ARE a rarity. Nothin' agin you. But will these butt-tards stoop so low as to steal from a woman? For shame, Warp One, for shame.

Nathan Fillion is my hero. I think he and Joss Whedon should form their own superhero team. I imagine it would be something along the lines of the old Justice League International series with Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, with the heroes cracking jokes left, right and center while serving out their own unique brand of justice.

Joss Whedon has mentioned in an interview that if Serenity fails at the box office with no chances of a sequel, that he plans to still tell the stories as a comic book instead of a movie franchise or tv show.
Now if Serenity is successful, I wonder how much room there will be in between movies for additional stories for a possible ongoing series. Especially since I imagine that Whedon will want to leave any major story or major character development for the movie.

Anyone else hear Fillion’s voice as Capt. Reynolds while reading this?
The first issue was good. It had the same “feel” as the show. I’m hoping the movie does well and we can get a second TV series (hopefully NOT on Fox).

I gather that Whedon had to renounce any possibility of another TV series as part of the deal to reclaim the rights from FOX after the show was cancelled. But he certainly is hoping to do more movies.

Thanks for the info. That sucks.
With such a big cast and so much back-story to go through... while I can't wait to see the movie, I think it would work better long-term as a TV show ("work better" as in the story would, not commercially successful "work better"... not sure on that).

Yeah, when Universal bought the movie rights to Firefly part of the deal was that they couldn't make a tv show for the next 10 years. Then again, it's always possible for Universal to go back to FOX make a new deal to buy the tv rights from them. Universal owns the Sci-Fi and so far Firefly is getting good ratings on the Sci-Fi channel. However, if Serenity is a big success I think they are definitely going to keep making more movies. Also the whole cast are all signed on for two more movies.

From what I've read the movie is basically the main story arc from what Whedon had planned season two jammed into two hours. Having seen the movie myself, I can definitely say the movie covers quite a bit of story material. Unfortunately it seems more that the small character moments are lost in the translations as there's only time for the main character points. Also one of the few complaints that I've heard about the movie is that while it's quite funny at times the movie is quite dark and is not as fun as some of the tv episodes are. Only that's what you get when you take all of the main story elements, which are quite intense and driven by dark moments. Take any season of Buffy or Angel and go over just the main story arc and it gets pretty dark.
So yeah, we are sort of missing out of all sorts of additional stuff that would have been in the tv series had Firefly continued, but at the same time it's one hell of an incredible movie! I mean there are some really amazing scenes which I'm not sure how they would have pulled off as a tv show. So I'm kind of torn, which one would have been more enjoyable.
Either way, I hope that the movie is a big success and Whedon and the rest of the cast keeps it coming.

I'm lucky to shop through Atomic Comics in Phoenix, Arizona. They sold out the first week but had a reorder in the next week. I bought the last copy with a Jayne cover. Definitely getting the Jo Chen cover next week.

Okay, people, let me tell you this - the 10-year thing is utterly false. It was something that Nathan Fillion said at either a con or the MBs that got blown WAAAAAAAAAY out of proportion. Since then, both Joss Whedon and Fillion have debunked the rumor.
The real hamper to more Firefly TV is Joss Whedon, who is now concentrating on movies, having done all he wanted to do with TV shows.
P.S. SERENITY is a great movie. I saw the advanced screening in May, and it was better than Episode 3.

Do you know where (con, interview, message board, etc.) this was debunked? Also was the 10 years mark that debunked or the whole tv rights bit? Because I remember in a recent interview that Jewel Staite said something along the same lines that Universal doesn't have the rights to a tv series. She didn't give an exact time frame like 10 years, but she said it was quite a long period of time before Universal could get the tv rights.

I also saw an advanced screening and definitely agree with you. As I've said elsewhere, it's hands down the best movie I've seen so far this year and the best sci-fi/action movie I've seen in a long time.

Well I think whether the rights enable them to make the show or not I'm not sure they could get everyone back together to do the show. I heard one of the cast members just joined a show starting this fall (can't remember which.) and I also heard the Summer (River) Glau has auditioned for the new X-men movie to play Kitty Pride. Two more movies im sure would be no problem but I am thinking the cast has moved on with their career's. I am just glad that if the movie works we get two more movies and if that doesent work we get more comics. Either way us Firefly fans get more stories in a universe that was never meant to be. How many good failed shows can claim that the story is going to continue long after it's gotten the axe.

I want comics
Shout out to all Browncoats here on the board. I bought the series on DVD and it has fast become my fave cancelled show (to which I have a long list, many that were on FOX coincidently ). Anyways I won't be geeting the mini because it will be too much of a temptation to read before the movie.
Actually I just found out that there WAS a mini...I'll get the trade though.
I've been anticipating the film even more so then Star Wars, War of the Worlds and perhaps even Batman Begins. Joss and crew gave us 14 steller episodes of action, humour, drama and suspence and I can't wait for the film. But to have a regular series written by Joss himself would be the icing on the rice cake.
Keep Flying.

The mini-series fills the gap between the tv series and the movie. It won't spoil the movie for you any more than watching the tv series before seeing the movie would. Actually from the looks of it, the comic is going to explain things and set things up for the movie.

I completely agree with this. Star Wars has been a let down all through the prequels and all four Batman movies were bad in varying degrees. This is the only movie that I can even think of where the characters and the story are good enough for any writer to step in to and their creator and dialogue genuis has yet to even reach his full potnential as a writer. Serenity is one movie that as I lay my 8 bucks down to get my ticket I know I am ripping them off for the total enjoyment I will get from this film. I am a huge Buffy fan, I have all seven seasons and watch them frequently. I tell you this because I feel Firefly makes Buffy look like she's standing still. With the exception of the episode "Bushwhacked" Every episode could stand up against nearly any movie with it's drama, action and humor.

Hate to say it, but Nathan Fillion's experience is probably typical of comic stores in Canada. Of the dozen or so that I've come across in Toronto and Edmonton, there's only been one that's impressed me; my LCS of choice for nearly 4 years, Cyber City Comix.
It's strange that an industry inherently more reliant on good customer relationships than other retailers, often has poor service and presentation. There's no good reason that I should be leaving stores while coughing on a cloud of dust.
Have to note, I've never been to the Silver Snail or the Beguiling. So, nothing I've said applies to them.
I was about ready to give up comics entirely until finding my current store, and would probably give them up entirely if it ever closed down. I love the medium, but there's only so much a man can take.

All comic book shop owners I've ever met fit Nathans' description. Actually, so do all the fans. They all have that same sarcastic tone within their humour....except on here of course. Always makes me laugh when I meet people who live up to their given stereotypes!
Nathan is amazing. GO SERENITY! Ah, Joss you are god.

Both the Silver Snail and the Beguiling are really great stores. The Beguiling has probably the best selection of alternative and independent comics on their downstairs floor, with a good selection of mainstream comics on their upstairs floor. The Silver Snail has a great selection of mainstream comics with a decent amount of alternative comics also with a lot of toys and merchandise. Both stores have very friendly and knowledgeable staff.
