NEAL ADAMS IN GIANT-SIZE X-MEN #3

Giant Size X-Men #3, pg. 1Later this month Marvel will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Giant Size X-Men #1 & #2 with the release of Giant Size X-Men #3, an 80-page special reprinting some classic X-Men tem-up stories, along with a brand new “untold tale” the All-New, All-Different X-Men written by Astonishing X-Men writer Joss Whedon. And its only appropriate Marvel got one of the true giants of the industry to draw the story – Neal Adams.

Marvel released a preview of Adams’ pages Tuesday. Click on the images below to see larger versions.

Giant Size X-Men #3 goes on sale June 8th with a cover price of $4.99. The special also features a collection of the X-Men’s classic team-ups, featuring the X-Men tangling with the FF in Fantastic Four #28 (July 1964), the Avengers guest-starring in X-Men #9 (January 1964) and Spider-Man in X-Men #35 (August 1967).

TOO MUCH COLOR IS A BAD THING!

I'd only hope the colors wouldn't be over-rendered. In Neal's case, his black-line is what makes his work really standout as well as his panel compositions. Too much smooth coloring is only going to deplete that illustrious approach that makes his work so engaging.

Many of today's artists need to be colored, because they don't know how to spot blacks, or choose not to. Since coloring technology has gotten better that part of the craft is given more breathing room. But still, like Mignola...less is more.

It is nice to see Neal Adams back on the X-Men (even if it is only for a little project like this one). But, isn't Marvel--comic book companies in general--sick of reproducing old material?

Oh well, I'll get this one anyway...

I agree, Skinshark. The art looks just as good if not better in black & white as it does in in color. Adams hasn't lost his magic.

Story page count???

If the three reprinted stories are 20 pages each, that leaves only 20 pages for the new story... Which will be perfectly fine, if there are not ads in the comic. I can't imagine a high profile comic like this *not* having any ads in it.

Why? They are making money [off us] for essentially doing nothing.

Take those "Essential" Trade Paper Backs (by Marvel) for example... Nothing more than a collection of stories already been published once collected as a TPB in Black & White.

Compared to how a new comic is created these days, reprint collections are a walk in the park.

THREE CHEERS FOR SUNFIRE!

And ugh...im drawing a blank on Warpath's Brother's name, and assuming this is a flashback since he's still alive. Thunder-something?

Warpath's brother is Thunderbird.

I was interested in this Title when it was solicited, now I am excited and can't wait to read it. Neal Adams is by far one of the most influential people in comics and it is amazing to see he hasn't lost his touch.

Actually, this Joss Whedon & Neal Adams story is ONLY 8 PAGES. Although I enjoy the work of both creators quite a bit, I don't know how many we'll sell when it's only 8 new pages in a five dollar comic. I've been waiting to see the reaction to this for a while to try to estimate the amount of people that will actually buy it versus just reading it in the store.

It's Neal Adams...of course I'm getting it.

I'm glad that the two comic companies are using such a legend again before he gets too old or dies. He's been out in the cold too long.

Came out the same year as Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975). Giant-Size X-Men #2 was all reprints (like many of Marvel's 1970s "Giant-Size" specials).

yeah

good. no claremont. i mean, his old stuff is great! and so is x-men:the end. but did you ever not look at who wrote something, open the book, read, and know it's claremont already? his style of writing gets so repetitive. then again, you run out of ideas and sink into repitition when you write like everything. seriously, in the 80's he worked on uncanny, new mutants, excalibur, and a bunch of other stuff too. he must've run out of ideas once he got to excalibur, cuz he started making people like cabbage and celery and sponge and like a bunch of imbeciles called warpies i think. yeah.......... so definitely getting giant size #3. and that's what marvel likes to hear. 8 pages=5dollars! it costs them nothing to reprint and they stick us with 8 pages for 5 bucks. but the reprints are cool. isn't x-men#35 also morph/changeling's first appearance? it is. i'm pretty sure. which sucks is of the old comics i got i have #34 as my oldest and then #37 and 38, 42(D:changeling), 55(2nd havok, not great condition), and a few others like the reprints that occured in early 70's, maybe late 60's, i dunno. neal adams is great, but how old is he? i was kinda hoping this issue would be like #1 where we got like 5 new characters along with 2-3 new but relatively unused. like back then when the new ones were nightcrawler, storm, colossus. thunderbird. the sorta unused but already introduced were banshee, wolverine, and sunfire, and of course cyclops. in the new ones, it'd be cool for the older ones to be nocturne, x-23, siryn, and sunpyre, as well as marvel girl and warpath. how cool would that be? x-23, nocturne, siryn, and marvel girl being the daughters of those older x-men from giant size#1... daughter of nightcrawler, cyclops, banshee, and wolverine. warpath obviously being brother to thunderbird ad sunpyre as sister to sunfire. that'd be soooo cool if they joined the x-men in that issue, as well as 3-4 other new ones. good ideas, huh? i'll keep them in mind when i grow up to be a writer!!! i got a ways to go cuz i'm only 14 and i can already draw as good as most guest pencilers they shove on books.... but um yeah now i sound stuck up sorry 'bout that i take it back.

ahhhh

its nice to see sunfire up and around after what happened to him in rogue's series

aaaaaaahhhhh!@!!!!!!! you're my new hero cuz i could like never find anyone else who read rogue! but hey the whole thing ain't 8 pages it has classic reprints... never know, in 10 years you could be wishing you bought it. i know my dad's regretting never keeping it. i think he gave it to his brother, or actually maybe his bro stole it.... that's it. i remember. my dad had sooo many old comics when he was a teen. he had like x-men 18 and up or so as well as tons of old ff and avengers, first appearances, first issues, tons of stuff. and my uncle stole his whole collection and sold it for like 1 or 2 hundred. he would live in a mansion if he sold all that stuff today. but yeah wasn't rogue awesome??? i liked seeing mystique and destiny. silver samurai's cool whenever he's depicted so i liked that too. and the two issues ago's backstory when she absorbed sunfire's memories of meeting the original x-men. i love that comic. so you read new x-men:academy x too? i love that. rogue's my fave x-woman, cannonball or nightcrawler is my fave x-man, and i like the cuckoos or icarus as my fave student. maybe wolf cub or victor, maybe that butterfly girl.... oooh! hisako! x-23! i like them! i like how in runaways it has the future as arsenic/heroine leading avengers and hisako leading x-men! if you don't read it, check it out. it's mind-blowing! so original and unique. read it. but yeah i even made up names for the paragons and some other students...

megan: flutter
jessie: preview (supposedly actual name... heard about in interview)
hope: showoff
dj: rythm
ben: ignitor, matchstick, firebug, i'm undecided
nick: already known as wolf cub

victor: camo or iguana
individual cuckoos: intercept, transmit, and psychopath
callie: earshot

also, i think david's sister kim should be a mutant eventually, something to fit her personality... a monkey tail! known as lemur!

i also made up characters... no one take my ideas... maybe christina and nunzio, i'd care less.

Ladyluck: has a ladybug-like shell used as protection, as well as the ability to alter probability... distinguishable features: antennae, freckles, buggy eyes, african american, maybe south american, but with dark skin, maybe ebony colored...

i have more but i keep them to myself!

Hey I really like Joss Whedon's writing. He could write the a story starring the crappiest Marvel character, and I'd still buy it. Neal Adams is a great artist as well. 8 pages is just fine to me. Plus I've never read the other stories before. Will they be in color as well?

Laura MArtin is coloring it, so I think Neal is in great hands.

also, with reprints, especially the "essential" TPBs, new/young readers are able to get the classic stories without having to shell out hundreds of dollars for the original issues from the 60s-70s. the companies also benefit further from this because the money goes to them, rather than dealers (who would profit from back-issue sales.)
