STEVE LIEBER & SARA RYAN ON FLYTRAP: JUGGLING ACT

Think of it as small batch comics – a microbrew compared to Budweiser. Er, not even that – think of it as getting a bottle of home-made beer from a couple who really, really knows how to make good beer.

That’s the headspace you need to get into to understand Flytrap Episode One: Juggling Act by Sara (Me and Edith Head) Ryan and Steve (Gotham Central, Detective Comics) Lieber. 16 pages, $2.00 (at a con, or $2.50 postage paid), home-made and shipped out from the duo’s kitchen table.

And so far – a modest success.

We caught up with the creators to talk about the approach to comics, the story, and the plans for Flytrap’s future.

Newsarama: First off, big picture, what's the idea behind this? Self publish in small batches?

Steve Lieber: Yes. We both love the chapbook as a format.

Sara Ryan: And it's a way for us to work together on our own terms without the huge timesink that 'real' publishing involves.

very cool book... picked it up in Chicago, and I am hooked. Can't wait to see the other chapters. Personal works like this are always the best.

More on Sean Bieri: his stuff is well worth the effort to find it - he's a heckuva artist!

I just bought the issue 10 minutes ago thru Paypal. I figure what the hell, right? Sometimes you gotta try something new just for the sake of trying something new. And for $2, it won't break me.

Anyways, best of luck Steve and Sara and I'll be patiently awaiting my copy of Flytrap # 1.

Today's orders are in the mail. If you get the chance, post here when you've got the book. Sara and I are always eager to hear what people think.

I'm so disappointed, I read header and thought this was going to be about giant mutated flies that eat people and then get trapped or something. Like that one crappy 80's movie with Goldblum but cooler.

Disappointed becaue this looks cooler and I really like giant mutated flies.

Geez, I hate to think that's all you need, because then there's no reason to pick up the book.

In the interview I made reference to the bedroom cleanup scene in Me and Edith Head. There's really no reason anyone should have to go digging out a booklet from their old comics pile just to see what I'm talking about, so here's a scan of the page:

Appropos of nothing that's on topic here anymore, Randy at Fourth Rail just reviewed Flytrap, and didn't even mention the goddamn monkey.

First off I have to let everyone know Lieber's not a late shipper. I received my copy almost 2 weeks ago.

This is a very good and very funny book. Strong script. Strong artwork.

In a nutshell its about a very strong though emotionally insecure PR rep named Maddy who is literally having the day from Hell. Like most of us she's juggling career, love life and emotional stability while trying to maintain some semblance of "normalcy". Unfortunately for her it all comes crashing down on the same day at roughly the same time.

I have to give major props to Steve Lieber and Sara Ryan for putting this together. This is straight up guerrilla comics and I gotta say I loved every minute of it. Hell, I'd even pump $50 bucks to them thru PayPal right now if it would ensure that # 2 is completed and released.

This is good comics and we need more of it.

Why start a new thread when I can revive an old one? My schedule didn't allow me to draw any more Flytrap stories, so Sara teamed up with another artist. There are two new issues of Flytrap, both illustrated by Ron Chan, artist of A Dummy's Guide to Danger.
