I think he has the kernel of good ideas but the execution falls flat in my opinion.

For instance, I liked the idea behind the new Captain Britain, but it just didn't gel at all. I liked the idea behind the New Invaders (a black ops project perpetrated by the Secretary of Defense Dell Rusk), but it just didn't work on paper.

He's the sort of person who really needs a co-plotter or scripter working with him.

I think he is the worst comic book writer I've ever read, and I've read a lot of what he's written. I think his dialog is bad, his plotting is bad and his characterization is bad. Bad, Bad, Bad.

I didn't even like his art on Elektra, and that was before I "knew" who he was.

Chuck Austen is a cool dude in my book. His US War Machine was amazing.

ill just point out the highlights of chuck austen

1) U.S. War Machine
2) Juggernaut part of the X-Men
3) Leaving Action Comics
4) Finally leaving X-men
5) Able to get writing gigs even though so many people hate his work.
6) (as someone pointed out) He has good ideas, but executed them badly.

The highlights of what I've read from C to the A.

1. The relationship between Juggernaut and Sam (the fish kid). This totally should've been explored more.

2. Regardless of people bitching about plotholes, I still think his Exiles was better than any of Exiles the last 2 years. Especially King Hyperion.

3. I only got to read the first couple issues, but I really liked the beginning of Action Comics.

If he writes for characters that are his own then he's a (just) below average writer.

But when he writes existing characters that have a history and defined characters, well, then he's just about the worst thing to happen to the comics medium imo.

He ruined the Avengers to such a point that his work made me stop buying the Avengers after 30 solid years of never missing an issue. He changed the Justice League from heroes to crybabies (sometime raving crybabies).

I could go into more detail, but instead may I suggest that you just do a search for Austin - you'll see a ton of posts of how people felt while he was "writing" the books he was (somehow) assigned to and more.

It's actually AUSTEN first of all. Second of all. The very same complaints about Bendis were made on his Avengers run, yet no one is out to crucify him.

He didn't ruin anything. People like his stuff. He's not the worst.

I hate these threads, because in about 5 posts or less it was just degenerate into a bash and MattB will come down with his boomstick

He could do a search, but I think it's more theraputic to Austen bash once a month. Makes me feel better for him forcing me to drop 4 titles I normally read.

So a mediocre creative won't make you drop the title? If you don't like any other writer's stories, that doesn't make you drop the title? Just Chuck Austen?

Every comic he writes is "meh". Therefore I don't enjoy his writing.

I think Bendis' Avengers Disassembled was horribly written and not up to the standard I hold him too. That being said, he has proven himself to be an excellent writer, I gave him slack, and he has written 2 solid New Avengers issue.

Austen hasn't proven himself in all the stuff I've read of his, and thus, he gets no slack.

I can handle mediocre writing if I enjoy the character/team, as long as the art is good. The only reason I had previously dropped titles was crappy art (like Ramos on Spectacular or the Barry Allen Flash series when Carmine Infantino took over the art).

Chuck Austen was the first person that forced me to drop books because of his writing. I should thank Chuck though. Before him, I had some very very long runs on comics, and I had a completist attitude. Now I am a little more judgemental and am dropping more titles if I'm unhappy with the direction.

Good for you at least you realize now you don't have to buy the garbage when it sucks. I was very selective of what I put on my new pull list when I started it again. Sadly I think I may have to drop it soon.

I still haven't found a job and my unemployment has run out. I went down to the airport yesterday for a job that I was assured I'd be hired for, only to find out they aren't hiring. So I'm pretty depressed right now. I have bills and no income at all.

The only Austen book that I've read regularly is Action, which started out on a good foot but has become a chore to read. The only reason this book is still on my pull list is the fact that' he's leaving soon and I don't want to have to drop it just to have to put it back on later.
