MATT IDELSON PROMOTED TO SENIOR EDITOR, DC

Press Release

Matt Idelson, editor of DCU titles including CATWOMAN, BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHTS, BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, the DC Focus titles FRACTION and TOUCH and several upcoming projects for both the DCU and VERTIGO, has been promoted to Senior Editor.

"I'm thrilled and flattered by DC's faith in me," says Idelson, "and I'm totally jazzed to try and reward that faith with some darn good comics!"

"Working with Matt these past five years has been one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences I've had in my entire career," says Group Editor Bob Schreck. "His creative contribution to the Batman line has been enormous."

"Matt's inspiration and expertise have been an integral part of the success of the Bat-group," says Dan DiDio, DC's VP - Editorial. "This promotion is very well deserved."

Idelson joined the DC staff in 1999 as Editor. Before that, he was on the editorial staff of Marvel Comics, where he worked on titles including Deadpool and Captain America. Idelson graduated from Connecticut College in 1993 with a degree in English.

What is the main difference between an editor and a senior editor?

And looking at the comics listed, neither Gotham Knights nor LOTDK have been all that great in recent memory. His fault? Maybe, maybe not. Catwoman is stellar, but editing Brubaker would be a pretty easy job.

I think that Gotham Knights is good, good, good and I'm looking forward to the DC Focus line!

I wish Mr. Idelson the best and I'm glad that he'll continue to direct funny books.

Y'know...this sounds like the beginning of a riddle...

Who knows? Perhaps the main difference is simply the difference in title. But one would like to think that the difference between an editor and a senior editor has to do with responsibility, accountability, and the scope of what the company assigns to and expects from a staffer. One also imagines that a Senior Editor's salary is somewhat better.

I wouldn't presume to know how difficult or easy a job it would be--nor how much of his job actually involves the things we might assume it does.

Hey Matt,
Just in case you're reading this: GOTHAM CENTRAL rocks!!!! It's a damn good read every month and the art is killer. All it needs it better paper quality. Anyway, I've wanted to tell you that since the series started, but there is no more letter pages. Keep up the great work. Congratulations on the promotion!

but it's not just about editing Brubaker's scripts. Somebody had to read Ed's proposal and decide that it was a good direction to take the series in, somebody had to juggle the ongoing artistic shifts of the first 20-some issues and still get the book out on time, make sure that the colorist and letterer and inker were suited to the artist in question, get the trades collected, probably do some promotion, and several other things that I'm surely overlooking at the moment.
If an editor is doing his job well, he should be entirely invisible, because the book should come out on time and the entire thing should look and read smoothly.

Despite all the horror stories of terrible editors that fans sometimes hear, their jobs aren't that easy. That doesn't always excuse some of the stories, but these guys DO work hard to make the best comics that they can.

Props to Matt on what I can only assume has been a good job.

Yes congrats to Matt. I remember when he left from Marvel during my internship at the old building. He was defiantely sorely missed. Glad to see he's moved on to bigger and hopefully better things.
