FRANK MILLER VIDEO INTERVIEW ABOUT HOLY TERROR

Calling it “a relic from the first years of World War III,” Frank Miller shows off some pages of the upcoming, and yet unscheduled, graphic novel, Holy Terror! Batman in a brief video interview for SPACE (Canada's version of the SciFi Channel).

“It’s a propaganda comic that might’ve happened in the’40s, that DC wouldn’t do now,” Miller says in the clip, which was conducted in his studio. “It’s Batman versus al-Quaeda, and it’s pretty direct and abrupt and rough and tumble… I see Holy Terror! Batman as a relic from the first years of World War III, and I’m setting the whole thing up that way.”

The interview was filmed at the end of February, 2005.

CAN I GET A "HELL YEAH" FOR THIS!?!

This will make All Star Batman look like a Marvel Adventures book in comparison.

Art looks great.

Premise... still very leery of. My sound card isn't set up so I couldn't hear the audio. I'll definitely be picking this book up. the question is, when I'm done reading, will I be grinning or holding back nausea?

Miller hasn't done anything remotely good since "That Yellow Bastard."

If it gets good reviews, I may check it out, but I have been burned one too many times by his writing recently.

as much as I dislike his All Star parody of 90s Image comics, this looks like it could be a lot of fun.

ooooh yes.It seems Miller's art is getting a major upgrade from DK2 and alternate All Star covers.

OY VEY!!!

I think this will suck as bad as THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN and ALL STAR BATMAN combined. Although he's kind and cool in person, his work just doesn't have the same kick that it used to. I'm looking for the Frank Miller that made Daredevil rock in the 80s, the Frank Miller that made a fifty-something year old Batman into Dirty Harry to the Nth degree, the Frank Miller who brought a wonderfully sinful crime comic series to the masses. His writing and his art have become a warped vision of a has-been.

Same goes for Chris Claremont who only at Marvel still because they allow him to be there. He's a legend and to toss the man who wrote the Phoenix Saga out wouldn't look good on Marvel's image. So they keep him, giving him his little stories so that he can feel he's contributing when he really isn't and they're waiting for him to keel over so that they can give these titles to a writer who actually brings something new, different and actually good to the table.

The vision these two once had is no longer there. Why humor them and us with bad writing? Give someone who actually has something worthy to say chance, be it a new writer or old one who still has it together. But that's just me.

Just as long as Miller doesn't do the variant covers I think you'll be fine...

I've been turned off of his work since DK2 and his All Star B&R variant covers are horrible. But what was shown in the movie looked promising...like Sin City Miller. I personally don't think DC will touch it with a 10 foot pole, but if anyone can get it done it's Frank...

Nah, I'm leery of the premise, not the art.

Osama's head on a stick please.

I love the premise. Frank's got balls.

This is the type of thing I can tell my non comic reading friends and co workers about, that they might actually be interested in.

I wish Marvel would do an elseworlds Captain America book in the same vain.

I'm constantly trying to convince myself that All-Star and this are satires, but he's making it harder and harder. Art looks a lot better than anything I've seen from him recently.

I still don't know about the whole premise. It almost seems like Miller's saying, "Hey! Look at me! I can still do edgy Batman stories!" Not the best way of putting that, I know, but it almost seems like a cry for attention or a distraction from All Star Batman & Robin.

If you haven't read The New Deal, do so. And I think personally that stories involving terrorism are more effective when the hero's attacking the concept of terror itself, as was done in the afforementioned Captain America work. When you go and introduce a group such as Al-Qaeda that's still on everyone's mind and is easily associated to an event and a person (September 11th and Osama Bin Laden in this case), it becomes less about a person's battle to end indiscriminate hatred and more about a mindless fight between Batman and Osama. To rephrase the whole, telling a story that deals with the larger theme instead of a particular group (terrorism instead of Al-Qaeda) makes for a stronger and more meaningful story, in my honest opinion.

I posted this in the panel discussion thread but I believe it fits better here.

By the by, I wish DC would publish this comic in black and white SinCity style. That artwork looks like some of the best from Miller in ages!

This book could totally rock, but only if he keeps it retro. I love the idea of him doing a modern version of the classic Superhero propaganda comics of WW2 era. My only concern is just how modern is he going to take this old school theme……

With the originals of Superman punching Hitler and so on there was no question who the good guys and the bad guys were.

But as someone above posted this war isn’t so black and white.

And that is going to make whatever he puts in this book even more subject to ridicule.

His best bet is to keep the book simple and poignant.

In other words he needs to make the story be just about, Batman kicking al-Qaeda’s ass.
