Love it or hate it?

Many of you long time comic geeks I am sure are familiar with this event.

Someone finds out you are into comics, and immediately goes into how they have a bunch of comics from when they were kids that they are "POSITIVE" are worth money, and they want you to help them price them.

Almost always it turn out to be a giant pile of crap, worth absolutley nothing, but they proudly shout they have Spawn Number one and The Death Of Superman issue, still in the black bag. And with thier proud faces they look at you for reassurance, claiminfg "surely these are worth money?"

I used to hate it, because after hearing them go on about how great their collection was, it was so dissapointing. But now I realize I love it, when these poor deluded suckers come to me, expecting me to tell them they are sitting on a financial goldmine, and I can CRUSH all their little hopes by informing them that I spent more on gas coming to look at their books than their entire collection was worth, and I only live a block away.

Does anyone else derive any sick pleasure from this?

I have a friend whose grandmother recently passed away. While her father was taking care of his mother's estate, he came across his comic book collection from childhood. She came to me to find out if her father's books had any value at all, above sentimental value. Luckily, it wasn't the speculative lot that you described. There was a lot of fun silver and early bronze age stuff. Some of it was worth something, some of it wasn't worth a bag and board to keep them in, but it was a fun experience, and I got to share some of the history of the comics he had.

He just found a new batch and they're coming over saturday. If anyone's interested, I'll be happy to post the collection.

My dad says he has a bunch of expensive comics, but most of the ones I found aren't worth much at all except for one Spider-man comic worth 40 bucks.

About one year ago I was that person with the Spawn comics and other Image number ones getting their happy world pilllaged by the harsh reality of a comic price guide.

Now I started buying comics again and I mostly only carry about collecting great stories rather than comics of great monitary value.

I hate speculators, but for some reason at least once a quarter I get asked to look at some schmucks collection.

and then he wanted me to make him an offer. Like in the thousands. Oh man I was in tears.

Doncha love that......... they never believe you, they always hold on to that glimmer of hope you might be lying or not know what you are talking about. So you pull out a wizard and show them, then ask if they have a gerbil, because their comics would make a good cage lining.

yeah, let them go to a LCS and see how they get laughed at.

I'm usually kind enough to save my laughter till later.

But...I have found some good stuff in Garage sales. Even if there are no comics...ask. There may be some in an attic and those are the ones to look for.

Oh yeah, recently found the entire Mike Zeck Punisher limited series for a buck that way. Not a hugely valuable comics, but still it was a diamond in the rough.

Yeah, it's mostly frustrating. "I have Spiderman #1! It has a holographic cover, and I have the rare 2099 comics! They have HOLO covers! Probably worth a lot of money!" Then when I give them a dose of reality, telling them their collection isn't worth much, they tell me that they "Know for sure" it's worth something.

Shouldn't you consult the dice before replying anyway?
