JLA CLASSIFIED #10
DC Comics has released a five page preview of July’s JLA Classified #10, written by Warren Ellis, with art by Butch Guice, with a cover by Michael Stribling.
The solicitation for the issue reads:
Kicking off the 6-part "New Maps of Hell," written by Warren Ellis (TRANSMETROPOLITAN, OCEAN) with art by Butch Guice (Ruse, OLYMPUS)! In Metropolis, Lois Lane and Clark Kent investigate a rash of suicides at LexCorp, while Batman tracks an assassin with a deadly weapon in Gotham City. And on Themyscira, Wonder Woman is playing host to newly arrived academics, when a massive explosion hits, destroying the tranquility of Paradise Island.
These three seemingly unrelated events tie together in ways that must be seen to be believed!
JLA Classified #10 is due in stores on July 27th, and carries a $2.99 cover price.

Agreed.
And I never was a fan of Butch Guice to begin with, but this looks great so far.

Where did Guice disappear to in the last year? I know he was at Crossgen before, but when it went down, what took Guice so long to surface?
His stuff looks nice, but it's too bad it looks like Ellis is still filling his books half full with silent pages, by the look of the preview.

He's been working on a Humanoids book that's due out relatively soon now... Written by Geoff Johns.

Looks very nice. I'm not a big fan of that cover either, but those interiors are awesome.

The book from Humanoids is called Olympus. Check out the Scaling Olympus with Butch Guice that was up here a few months ago for details.
About that cover, I wonder if it's too late for DC to change the cover art for the book.

Interior artwork is great, Guice was great on Ruse and this looks to be just as good. I have to agree with you guys, that cover is horrible.

This sucks. His Ultimate FF and Ultimate Nightmare were horribly padded and his Iron Man lacked Iron Man. As such, I have no interest in another Warren Ellis padded book. I wish he would go back to doing what he would rather do instead of wasting his time on DC and Marvel books.

Almost reminds me of the 8 page scene of Tony Stark putting his Iron Man costume on. This is JLA, not Batman. Do we need 5 pages of Bruce putting on the batsuit? Only in a Warren Ellis comic it appears.

Thank you Jedifish - I couldn't have said it better. Ellis has been coasting for years. I wonder when editors will wise up and realize he's taking advantage of both them and us.

I guess i'm opposite man today....i like the cover art more than the interior. I'm wondering why Warren enjoys 5 pages of heroes suiting up all the time? I always thought the rule of thumb for good writers was to start off a story with a hook or something that grabs you right away. A man dressing up for battle doesn't do it for me.

I am quite bored with Warren Ellis...but Jackson "Butch" Guice did some truly brilliant works of comic book art on RUSE.
Why is it that Ellis always talks about how he hates to write superhero stores but always ends up coming back to, just superheroes.
Remember when he landed all those mini-series he published through various DC imprints, Vertigo, Wildstrom "Cliffhanger", Wildstorm "Homage" etc, etc. I do not think they sold that well so maybe that is why he went to Marvel?
The DC projects were very slow and we should not mention his recent Marvel projects.
Ok, if he did mainstream superheroes and shut up, but he always has to complain about superheroes.
He obviously likes superhero money, so why not just take it the $$$$ and shut up!
Anyway I personally have no problem trying this book with an open mind.
On the issues of superheroes, I truly enjoy superhero books no matter if it is John Byrne’s Doom Patrol or Grant Morrison’s current Seven Soldiers project, but I also enjoy the works by Joe Sacco, Morvan & Buchet’s Wake or Humanoids collections of Yves Chaland work.

Can we get a JLA story where Bats isn't the star/hero?
I mean seriously, it worked for Morrison because it had not been done. Now every JLA story hinges on Bats...
I myself enjoyed the older JLofA stories, where they mixed up the lineup with one or two of the big guns, mixed in with the top tier 2 stars.

Totally agree with the comments about Warren Ellis' lack of dialog and words in his comics. Quantity doesn't equal quality, but come on, give us something to read in our monthly comics. At $3.00 a whack, there should be some meat to each issue. Who knows, we only have 5 pages, but based on his past work and 3 out of the first 5 pages not having words doesn't bode well. I know he can produce meaty stories that wrap up monthly like he did on Global Frequency, but has he since? Maybe some issues of Planetary. His other arcs have seemed padded out. Also, what are the chances all these issues ship on time? I don't know if its him or his artists, but his books don't have a stellar record for hitting the stands on time. Although, I get the feeling this arc may be done where he has been exclusive to Marvel for a while.
On the more positive side, at least a lot of his stories remain good, and Butch's art looks absolutely gorgeous so I'll be picking this up (hopefully) monthly.

Umm has anyone been reading Ocean ? I'm really digging it.
The Apparat books were good too. Ellis has ups and downs like every writer, maybe cut him some slack.

I'm not sure if he's paying tribute to Alex Ross or if it's more a case of he and Alex Ross both taking the idea from the Daredevil movie. After the Daredevil movie did the scarred back thing, it started appearing in different comics.
