HOUSE OF M #1 COVER
At Brian Bendis' messageboard, the cover to House of M #1 by Essad Ribic has finally come out of hiding.
Here's a looksee...and we're betting less than ten minutes until a full character identification index is posted.
Of course, for Newsarama's interview with Bendis about the summer miniseries, click here.

That's a pretty nice cover. It's always a toss up whether those iconic 'posing' images will work better than something that looks like you just captured the characters in action. This one teeters on that edge, but it's jus so nicely done that it's hard to argue.

Since when are the X-Men back in bad costumes?
Oh yeah, it happened in that series where the Danger Room feels bad and attacks everyone.
On another note, I find that Ribic's pencilled work is much stronger than his painted stuff. Compare the Four Horsemen mini he did with his generally unimpressive Wolverine covers, for example.

It's a nifty looking cover. I wonder why they've been so secretive releasing the covers? But I like it.

Hm, I prefer the Quesada cover by a long way. Ribic's painted work does absolutely nothing for me, I'm afraid. If I get the choice, I'd choose the Quesada cover, but that seems unlikely to happen.

Did anyone else notice that Beast is back to his original form? Something tells me House of M will be the end of the second mutation.

still looks pretty cat-like to me.
my favorite work from essad is still the first arc of The Brotherhood from 2001. the book totally fell apart in its second arc, but i still thought it was alright.

Easy. From Background to foreground:
Ms. Marvel, Wasp, Falcon, Iron Man, Sentry.
Captain America, White Queen, Collosus, Yellow Jacket, She Hulk.
Spider-Man, Gambit, Cyclops.
Beast, Wolverine.

As for Beast being in his first blue form, I'd say that's more about artist's interpretation than anything else. He's in his lion form in the Coipel pieces. Similarly, Emma Frost's costume is significantly different here than in Astonishing and the House of M preview pieces.
It's not the best Ribic work I've seen. Still nice, though. I loved his work on Loki. Amazing stuff.

I was about to say that. The talking gorilla/minotaur look is going away.

I am surprised nobody has brought this up yet (it was brought up almost immediately in a thread at Talk@):
Why is Gambit on the cover?
They have tons of Avengers (New and Old) and they have the "Astonishing" X-Men team. Gambit is the one character that doesn't belong. This makes me think that he might not survive the mini (doesn't help that it was confirmed that his series was cancelled).

I'd agree with that. I liked the old Beast better.

I miss the word balloons
Where's the Countdown to Infinite Crisis logo?
I'm not a big fan of pose covers. Give me a 70's style, everyone-getting-pulled-into-a-dimensional-rift-Thor-throwing-hammer-Cap-about-to-lose-his-cool cover.
FF Torch/Thing cover? yawn.
Iron Man cover? yawn.
Shan...
...
... OK, Shanna covers are an exception.

I really wish publishers would steer clear of painted covers. Don't get me wrong...they are nice works of art, but I prefer pencils and inks when it comes to comics. Just my two cents.

That's rather the point, though, isn't it? Dr. McCoy is one of the most intelligent people on the planet, but he looks barely human. In my mind, the less human he looks the better that works. His old appearance was a blue, hairy man with fangs. After the second mutation, Beast looks more... beastly. I'd hate to see that go.
Mutation shouldn't always fall within sociable limits. Grant Morrison (together with his artists) understood that, and introduced characters like Beak and a secretary with twigs for arms, as well as making Beast live up to his name. The fact that the great majority of X-Men could easily pass for human is a bit xenophobic on the part of creators, and for the audience as well for wanting them that way. It's long been speculated that this is why, in the DC Universe, the Martian Manhunter never became as popular as the other JLA members. And that's about the least controversial example I can think of...
