WHEDON'S COMIC BOOK SERENITY
In a quick word in this week’s issue of Newsweek, (online here) the announcement was made that Joss Whedon will return to his own properties in comics this summer with a prequel to Serenity, Whedon’s upcoming feature film based on his cancelled TV series Firefly, set 500 years in the future.
From the original Universal press release on the film:
The Serenity cast will include such returning Firefly cast members as Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds, Gina Torres as Zoe Warren, Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra, Jewel Staite as Kaylee Frye, Adam Baldwin as Jayne Cobb, Sean Maher as Dr. Simon Tam and Summer Glau as River Tam.
The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, "Serenity." He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family - squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.
When Mal takes on two new passengers -- a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister -- he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board "Serenity" herself.
Dark Horse Comics confirmed for Newsarama that they will be publishing the three-issue prequel, written by Whedon and Brett Matthews (a Firefly writer and former comics collaborator with Whedon), with art by Will Conrad. Issue #1 is due in July.
Serenity is due in theaters on September 30th.

Movie out in Sept? Kewl!!!!!
Not sure about the series though. Since this is pretty much a cowboy series (more or less) I'm not big on those types of stories. It was the actors and their ability as a whole that drew me into this world. I suppose I can imagine the actor's and their voices if I buy this comic, but I doubt it would work for me.
Ah well, after the movie and with no quickly forthcoming future stories in this world, I might relent and pick up the trade of this that will surely be out next year.

Why is Mal's hair so short?
P.S. I'll be picking this up. Here's hoping for Serenity's Box Office succes and Firefly's subsequent return. If DVD sales allowed the return of Family Guy (May 1!!!), perhaps they can do the same for one of the best shows in recent memory.

Since they screened the cancelled series here past midnight on free-to-air I have only one image of the show. Capt. Reynolds' naked backside. Thought the show was good though.

The name of the ship. And the title of the movie. Yes, there is greater meaning to the name if you watch the series.
And it looks like they did a fly-by on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA recently:

Cannot wait!!
I loved the series ("Firefly" - a victim of Fox Network), and I cannot wait for the movie! A graphic novel prequel is icing on the cake! Serenity is still flying!

Serenity is the name of the spaceship.
And if you didn't already know that, you should rent the Firefly series on DVD now. I was never much of a Buffy fan, but Firefly is pretty great. The first two episodes and the last episode alone are worth renting the show for, and while I think the in-between episodes vary in quality, they're all good, at least.
Don't JUST watch the first and last episodes though! I often cite the last episode as episodic television at its finest. It's a perfect, standalone episode, accessible by those unfamiliar with the show, but there are so many wonderfully character-based subtleties in the episode that flesh out the script for those who are familiar with the characters. Kind of like the Cowboy Bebop movie, actually.

I am so there. This show and Wonderfalls were examples of FOX TV programming insanity when they were cancelled. I can't wait for the movie!!!

Good series, but I HATED the theme song.
Whole time I watched the show, I thought, now THIS would be a kickass comic. (Actually, THIS would be the way to do a Starjammers comic) All I can say is Thank you, Dark Horse.

Jayne is the best "spoiler" character since Dr. Smith on the old Lost in Space series.
My favourite moment on the series was when Mal had his confrontation with Jayne at the airlock.
Adam Baldwin was fantastic as an Angel villian. (in fact Gina Torres was great on Angel as well, as was Nathon Fillion on Buffy). I'm sure if either Angel or Buffy kept going, we would have eventually seen the entire Firefly cast show up in guest spots as big bads.
Looking forward to the prequel series, particularly if Joss is writing... I tend to only pick up the tie in comics that are written by one of the series writers because those tend to be "canon".

Take me out to the black
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back
I just finished watching the complete Firefly TV show on DVD for a second time. Man, what a great series.
I look forward to the movie and can't wait for this comic. I'm glad to see Joss returning to his own properties in the comics medium. I thought Fray rocked and this mini should be great too.

Thank the sweet Lord Darkhorse is putting this out. When I saw headline I was worried IDW would put it out like they are with Angel. I would hate to pat $4 an issue for this.
This book is going to be yet another must have for me...
