SEA OF RED #1

Image has provided Newsarama with a seven page preview of Rick Remender, Kieron Dwyer and Salgood Sam’s Sea of Red, an ongoing series debuting in March.

The solicitation for the first issue reads:

story & script by RICK REMENDER
story & breakdowns by KIERON DWYER
finishes & color washes by SALGOOD SAM
cover by SALGOOD SAM

CONCEPT
Sea of Red tells the tale of a young sailor turned undead by the crew of a cursed Pirate ship, his century-spanning search for revenge and the tricks that time plays on the mind.

THIS ISSUE
1533. Deep in the night, a ship sinks under mysterious circumstances. Twenty-three year-old Marco Esperanza is the only survivor, left adrift with only a plank of wood to keep him afloat. After days of drifting, he is brought aboard a strange ship. But his salvation turns to nightmare as he learns the ship is the dreaded Black Galleon. The evil mates of the Galleon aren’t just pirates, they’re vampires, and Marco is soon forced to join the damned crew.

2004. Marco Esperanza has spent the past 400 years clinging to life tied to the bow of a sunken vessel in the dark, briny, deep. Surviving on the cold sour blood of fish, Marco awaits his release and a chance for revenge that may never come.

I didn't care for Dwyer's art on Avengers, but his work on IDW's Remains was some of the best zombie artwork I've ever seen. This looks great too so I guess that I'll be picking up Sea of Red.

I added this to my pull list as soon as I read the Previews entry for it. Now that I've seen actual pages from the book itself, I'm even more excited about collecting this title. The art is very high quality and I suspect the story is going to be a real treat. Kudos especially to Kieron Dwyer. I am impressed.

I love the art, but I don't really like the writing. Damn.

Hey folks

Thanks for all the (mostly) positive feedback to this stuff so far. Rick and I--and especially Salgood--are all busting our humps to make it a cool book and a fun ride. Give the first issue a shot and I guarantee you'll stick with the series. It will be going places nobody can predict right now.

I want to make sure everyone is clear that Salgood is carrying the biggest weight on the book, artwise. I truly am just providing basic thumbnails to him, and he is creating some really beautiful work from there, so give him all the praise he deserves if you're liking what you see so far.

And for a little further clarification: Rick is doing a great job with the writing as well. He and I work on all the story elements together, but he is the writer of the series, not me.

It seems like if my name is even mentioned related to a project, many people assume I'm the guy doing the bulk (or all) of the work. I just want to make sure people know that's not necessarily the case. Other people are working too hard not get some of the attention they deserve.

Stay tuned for more cool stuff, re: Sea of Red and a few other projects Rick and I have coming up this year, together and separately.

Best
Kieron

Yeah, nice try guys. Isn't this really just another rehash of "Howard the Duck"?

Whatever.

Well it's a good thing you're lettering Sea of Red, cause that thing is just a big Howard the Duck clone job.

Snore.

Kieron, you're a class act. And I've loved your work since way back in your Captain America days.

I passed up on this one. Already wanted Barbarossa. But from what I saw earlier this looked very cool. And now there's a little more art here...............and damn, I think I will get back on my decision and add this title, it looks too good..........story comments are for later, after a few issues.

Think I'll probably check this out. I'm a bit worn of vampires, but I'm down with pirates. The black / white / red is pretty neat. I wonder if it'll hold up for the whole series without becoming stale?
