DABEL BROS/SILVERBERG THE SEVENTH SHRINE LANDS @ IMAGE

Press Release

Amidst publishing problems, hitches and delays, the Dabel Brothers have maintained one thing: Their groundbreaking storybook edition of Robert Silverberg's The Seventh Shrine will hit the shelves in the very near future.

"Since we announced The Seventh Shrine last year, we've enjoyed a lot of success with our critically-acclaimed adaptation of George R. R. Martin's The Hedge Knight, as well as our adaptation of Dragonlance: The Legend of Huma," said Ernst Dabel, Editor-in-Chief and President of DB Pro. "In the meantime, we've been hard at work on our initial adaptations of several other major series in science fiction and fantasy, and there are few that we're as excited about as Robert Silverberg's world of Majipoor."

Robert Silverberg, a multi-Hugo and Nebula award-winning author, has penned hundreds of short stories, novels and collaborations in his 50-year professional writing career. Dabel Brothers Production (DB Pro) will be adapting the short story "The Seventh Shrine," a follow-up to the novels Lord Valentine's Castle and Valentine Pontifex, into a beautifully illustrated storybook format featuring paintings by artist Anders Finér. The book will be published initially in January by Image Comics as a two-part comic book series and republished later on in a complete storybook volume.

"Working with a writer of the caliber of Mr. Silverberg is both an honor and a privilege," said Les Dabel, New Business Director and Vice President of DB Pro. "We're tremendous fans of his writing, and we're excited to see the world of Majipoor brought to life in such vivid detail."

"I'd never heard of Robert Silverberg prior to beginning this project," said Mike S. Miller, artist of The Hedge Knight. "But since he was working as an editor for The Hedge Knight and I knew we'd be adapting his work soon, I read through The Seventh Shrine and Majipoor Chronicles. His writing in these books is simply amazing; it's rare that you'll find an author with the ability to craft stories with such depth and character."

"Most writers just string together action sequences and space them out with a little bit of description and exposition," said Sean Jordan, editor of the adaptation of The Seventh Shrine. "But not Mr. Silverberg. His writing style is almost overwhelming to new readers because it's so detailed and immersive. I've always relished the adventurous feeling of the Majipoor stories because the writing works very, very hard to place the reader in an alien world where violence and warfare are almost nonexistent. The conflict is psychological, political, and cerebral before it ever gets physical."

"Of course, anyone who's read and enjoyed Frank Herbert's Dune, Arthur C. Clarke's Rama, Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, Isaac Asimov's Foundation or Gordon R. Dickson's Childe Cycle will also love the Majipoor series," added Jordan. "This is real science fiction. I consider Mr. Silverberg to be one of the best and most prominent science fiction authors in history, and I'm confident readers who voyage into the world of Majipoor with us this spring will be captivated with what they see and discover."

The first issue of the the two-part Seventh Shrine miniseries is available for preorder in the November Diamond PREVIEWS and will go on sale January 19.

The storybook edition of The Seventh Shrine will be available in Spring, 2005 through Image Comics and will be available for solicitation through Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. I'll second that...

I recall there being a couple stories on the back-and-forth between DB and Devil's Due, but would have thought there'd be some sort of news by now, if only to say "sorry, but there won't be a # 6...".

For whatever minority I may be in, it seems rather discouraging to see/hear about other pending projects, yet not have a complete Dragonlance series--makes me a bit paranoid at whether I'd get any complete story.

ah well. my $.02 for now.
