BLOODSUCKER TALES #1

IDW has provided Newsarama with six pages of Bloodsucker Tales #1 coming later this month. As announced at San Diego, the new series will feature two stories in each issue, one by Steve Niles which will continue to explore the world and mythology of 30 Days of Night - “Dead Billy,” illustrated by Kody Chamberlain.

The second story of Bloodsucker Tales will be handled by a rotating writer, with Ben Templesmith illustrating. First up in filling the slot, Matt Fraction, writing “Juarez,” which introduces Lex Nova, a former detective who speaks his inner monologue and is more than a little…off. Fraction’s story will run for eight issues.

As Newsarama originally reported from San Diego:

Matt Fraction talked about his contribution to 30 Days of Night: Bloodsucker Tales, the upcoming series which will explore aspects of the universe established in Niles’ 30 Days of Night story. Discussing his story, Fraction said that he was hooked by the mysteries surrounding the disappearances and deaths of somewhere between 200-400 women near Juarez, Mexico. The women are often found in shallow graves with evidence of rape and torture. “There’s already a high body count, so I though, why not set a horror story there?” Fraction said.

Fraction’s story, drawn by Ben Templesmith, will star the world’s worst private detective who decides that he knows who’s behind it all, and sets out to investigate. The series will continue in this manner, with other creators joining Templesmith for a story, while Niles and another artist will provide a second story in the same issue, each running 12 pages.

Bloodsucker Tales #1 is due in stores on October 20th.

Ben Templesmith's art looks great. I wish Marvel would let him do a GhostRider story. Those pic's that were floating around the Internet were great.

I agree. Templesmith is just plain fantastic. It amazes me that he is doing the art here and the art for his book, Singularity 7, at the same time. Unless he finished this a while back, it really shows up the other talent out there.

And the dialogue in Jaurez is great too. Just the idea of a guy that actually says his internal monologue and everyday thoughts is a great idea. That last panel tells me it can be a pretty funny little ride.

I love Ben's art as usual....but I'm really stoked to see Kody getting on a project like this. I LOVE his pages!

Can't wait to see what else comes up in Bloodsucker Tales.

I'll be at the Wizard Dallas convention doing some promo for the book and maybe some giveaways, so if anyone plans to attend, please drop by and say hi! We don't have the booth number yet, but I'll post that when we get it. I'm also doing some signings in Louisiana (New Orleans, Lafayette, Baton Rouge and Houma for sure). I'll try and make it to Monroe and Lake Charles as well. I'll be adding dates and locations on my site as I get them booked.

Your probably right, Templesmith's version of GhostRider or DC's Demon would be great.......but why do fans always assume or cling to undying hope that every great comic book artist has to do work for Marvel or DC? Does that mean Bloodsucker Tales is irrelevent?

I'm not trying to single you out here, but its a common mentality that many comic fans have. I think it underminds the project the creator is working on. What if Ben Templesmith never works for Marvel or DC? Would you or any other fan not buy Bloodsucker Tales?

If you like his work, pick it up, but don't assume every artist/writer must do a Marvel or DC project.

It might be a matter of taste. I'd MUCH rather see a Templesmith Ghost Rider than this stuff.

Reason being? I'm SOOOOOOOOOO bored with seeing the same 4-5 types of monsters in hollywood and books and wherever. It's very rare when a Freddy or even a Jeeper Creepers comes along. Instead it's the same bloody boring vamp's, werewolfs, mummies, etc.

At least Ghost Rider hasn't reached the "I'm sick of him!" point. Well, he sorta did for awhile in the 90's but it's been soooooooo long now.

And, that pin-up I saw of Templesmith's Ghost Rider rocked! I'd buy it just for the artwork.

However, I'd much prefer to see Busiek stick with Astro City or Arrowsmith over Stupid Heroes anyday.

All that said though, I just snagged Dark Days and 30 Days of Night trades for $20 brand new and read them last week. For a vampire story Dark Days was entertaining. I wasn't that thrilled with 30 Days of Night though. It was ok, nothing else.

Sadly probably not to be man. I would give my left nut to do it though. Still surprised those pages I did took such a life of their own and got such a reaction. People made a lot of assumptions though. Ah well, they were a lot fo fun to do!

Thanks man! Actually, finished S7 awhile ago now ( final issue where everything gets explained out this month ) and now I'm working on a cool 48 page oneshot *at the same time* as Bloodsuckers. I really started getting into the art for it after #1, so I hope people stick around long enough. It should be a little different for me at least.

I agree on the Ghostie thing, I have actually been clammouring for that a couple year now. I have posted that on occasions on message boards for a vote for your dreamteam project type thing and it has always received a favorable response when he was coupled with Niles, Ellis, or Alan Grant. Templesmith is doing a bang up job on Singulrity 7 as well, worth a look. In regards to Bloodsucker tales I ordered the st and 2nd issues but will most likely cease because I just can't take IDW's high prices anymore, I can buy 2 Marvel books (depending) for the price of one of theirs.

I don't think I've ever bought a Ghost Rider comic, but I'd be there in a hurry if Ben got on board.

Have you guys seen Ben's new cover for issue #3 of Bloodsucker Tales! One of the coolest Templesmith covers yet!
