Funny Marvel Rumor

I wish I could give more details or substantiate this rumor, but I heard it from a (non-comic book collecting) friend who knows someone who works at Marvel.

Supposedly, an artist or writer (I forget which) at Marvel with a Japanese name is actually non-Asian. The Japanese name is only a pen name.

It's a pretty strange rumor because I can't figure out why someone would care to use a pen name in that way.

I have no idea.

Is it a writer or an artist?

One "asian" name I can think of is Frank Cho, but I've seen pictures of the guy, and he's a visible figure.

Can anyone else think of one?

Maybe it's June Brigman. She is under the impression that, unless you are doing Manga, you can't get a job in comics these days

The Suspects

Akira Yoshida: writer of Thor: Son of Asgard. Has worked in the manga, anime and video game industry.

Takeshi Miyazawa: artist on Mary Jane. Got his start in comic books on Sidekicks for FanBoy for which he was a 2000 Harvey Nominee.

Mizuki Sakakibara: artist on Exiles. Was the original artist attached to the Tsunami Namor, was billed by Marvel as "Japanese manga sensation."

I can barely say those, so it must be difficult to remember the spelling of them, Gregg.

I hope Akira is a real person, since Thor SOA is getting a solid fan base.

This is vaguely remiscent of a Seinfeld episode when that woman Jerry was seeing made Mrs. Costanza think she was Asian and therefore saved the marriage.

I think he is exclusive to Marvel, but his creator owned work can be done elsewhere i.e. Liberty Meadows for Image.
I think that is a pretty standard deal for the big-shots. Millar does it at least. Even JRjr does it. As long as any work-for-hire is for the company that pays you for a 2 year period or more.

Anyway, why is this strange, anybody remember Larry Hama? I didn't know he was of asian heritage. The thought didn't even cross my mind. But there you go.

Also, almost every jewish writers/artists/editors of the golden and silver age took non-jewish names for some reason. I don't remember which one.
And, that Brigman-woman might be on to something.

I feel bad for not having more info on this rumor. Sorry for the speculation.

Regarding a previous post, Jack Kirby also had his name altered (He was born Jacob Kurtzberg).

Not always, he wnet to Image, when he stop Syndication.
But, he hasn't released anything for Marvel yet. Except a few covers, i. e. ASM, and MK Spider-Man #4 interiors.

Now, about the jewish name, I know about Lee/Kirby, I don't know the REASON they changed their name.

when Lee first started writing comics, he used Stan Lee instead of Stanley Lieberman, because he knew he would be writing big comics someday and didn't want to be known by his real name for some reason. he officially changed it a couple years later.

I heard that Stan Lee wanted to save his real name for when he wrote "the great american novel" but as he was just writing "silly little comics, he shortened his name to just Stan Lee. But 'cause he continued to write comics for longer than he had expected, he legally changed his name.

I think it may have actually been something about not wanting people to know he was jewish. Who knows, it wasn't too long after WWII, right, and there was a lot of skepticism towards the jewish people.

Beat me to it!
This is the exact reason that Stan Lee changed his name.

That Stan Lee story is sad in a way. I guess comic books weren't treated very well way back, either.
