GRIMJACK RETURNS @ IDW
Less than a month after the announcement that the rights to the character had been freed from their legal hurdles and now reside with a new company created to promote GrimJack, IDW has announced that it will be the new home for the charater, with immediate plans including a trade paperback as well as a new miniseries.
IDW's press release reads:
GrimJack, one of the most popular comic book characters of the 1980s, is back with a vengeance. Early next year, IDW Publishing will start an aggressive publishing plan that will include collected editions of the classic stories originally published by First Comics, as well as an all-new comic series by creators John Ostrander and Timothy Truman.
The first action packed album will collect the Ostrander/Truman backup stories from Starslayer, along with the book-length GrimJack/Starslayer crossover. Also in this first trade paperback will be a brand new eight-page adventure by Ostrander and Truman, featuring popular GrimJack characters who were introduced later in the monthly series.
IDW Publishing, in conjunction with Arrogant/MGMS, will also present a brand new six-issue GrimJack series by four members of the original GrimJack team: writer John Ostrander, artist Timothy Truman, letterer John Workman and editor Mike Gold.
“We’re excited to join the ranks of so many of our old friends like Max Collins, Beau Smith, Scott Hampton and Kieron Dwyer. We’re really proud to have our work published alongside the talented folks who work with Ted Adams and his crew at IDW Publishing,” said Mike Gold of Arrogant/MGMS.
Artist Timothy Truman has painted a brand new cover especially for this trade paperback.
“When I first started reading comics,” IDW’s Publisher Ted Adams said, “GrimJack (and the entire First Comics line) was always one of my favorites. I’m thrilled that Mike, John, and Tim have chosen IDW as GrimJack’s new home.”

Well, crap.
I was really looking forward to reading GrimJack, but it looks like I'll be taking a pass. The reason? IDW.
IDW has a lot of titles that I'm really interested in (30 Days of Night, Wynonna Earp, Lore, Dark Days). They also have some of the best licensed properties out there. And from what I've seen, they put together quality comics with decent art.
But there's no way in HELL that I'm going to pay four bucks for a comic book.
And there's also no way that I'm going to pay $19.99 for a TPB that collects three or four issues.
Whoever came up with the pricing structure at IDW needs to be beaten to death with rocks.
Every comic store I've been in that carries IDW titles can't move the product at all. And it doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the books, or lack of interest in the titles. People pick them up, look at them, and then see the cover price and put them right back down. So I know I'm not alone.
If anybody from IDW happens to read this, please get a clue. There are a lot of people out there that are just like me. You have several products that we're interested in purchasing. We think that four dollars is way too much to pay for a fucking comic.

I totally agree. I was picking up a couple of the CSI minis for me sister and her friend but, OUCH!, $3.99 an issue?!?! They have had some books that looked interesting to me but at $3.99 a book, I had to pass.

That's the same reason I don't buy IDW titles. I'm interested in some of them, but paying $4 for a comic book just seems wrong. It's just one extra dollar and I buy stuff like DC: The New Frontier ($7 an issue) or Secret War ($3.50). Maybe the IDW books are worth every single penny, maybe I'm just used to get more for my money, maybe it's a bias that doesn't make much sense in comparison to other stuff I buy, but I just can't bring myself to spend that much for a single issue.

Just Tim Truman...?
I'm a huge Tim Truman fan and as co-creator of the character, he certainly deserves to be the artist on the revival.
But I loved Flint Henry's work on Grimjack and I hope that he'll be doing work on the book at some point. (Whatever happened to Flint Henry anyway...?)

He's doing a lot of work for 2000AD. The last US Flint Henry work I saw was that Man Bat series from about 6 or 7 (or even more) years ago.

Buy the trades on Amazon for 20% to 30% off. Or buy it from someone on eBay. That's what I do.

Yes the price is steep and I have not bought their other stuff partially because of that, but they are definitely a quality shop.
I will absolutely pony up the extra for one of my fav runs of all time. I'll probably get the trade tho.
First had one of the best line ups ever IMO.

I'm very glad to hear that Tim Truman is onboard for the new material. I'm all over this.
Love those IDW horror books too...

IDW is a boutique company who basically service a niche within a niche .... The prices can be a little steep (especially when you convert them to Aussie dollars), but it's just a question of how much the material is worth to you.
For me, Grimjack is worth plenty, so I'll give up my money as needed - both for the new material and the reprints. I assume that both will continue according to interest, so I certainly hope that people buy the trade and the mini-series. I'd love to see it all reprinted with IDW's beautiful production values and I'd also like to see more Grimjack as time goes by .... Excellent!

Aw freakin' hell!!
I was excited as hell until you said that. If they're 4 bucks a book, I'll have to pass, too.

Huh... I stand corrected. I never actually was sure they were the same person, but I assumed it (I mean Flint Henry... Henry Flint... Sounds good to me!). I'd like to know where Flint Henry is now, too!

While IDW's prices are a bit high I'm a big enough fan of Grimjack that I'll buy the trade paperback and the mini-series. I also concur with everyone who has said that they would like to see Jon Sable brought back. I loved that series too.

Darn...I was going to pick up the trade and new mini, but if these prices are true for the amount of content, then, unfortunately, I'll have to pass...rising gas prices and all, we have to be smarter consumers these days.

Unless something has changed recently, Flint Henry is the editor of Sketch Magazine, the industry "how-to" magazine published by Blue Line Pro.

THis is good news in the abstract, I guess. I was never a real fan of Grimjack (although I really liked Truman's Scout). And the price does seem a bit steep, but that's hardly uncommon these days.
Between this and the recent American Flagg announcement, I just hope we're moving closer to seeing Whisper collected and reissued in some form.
