I AM LEGION - IN FRENCH

I Am Legion illo by John CassadayThe good news, and then the bad: The good: John Cassaday is done with the art on I Am Legion, coming from Humanoids. The bad: it won’t be out in English until later this year. The kinda good: it comes out in French in May.

As if relations between France and America weren’t rough already…

The volume, written by Fabien Nury, is the first of several projects coming from Humanoids with contributions by North American creators. As such, it will be published in France before it gets an English edition through the new relationship between DC and Humanoids.

The volume is currently unscheduled by DC/Humanoids North America, which realistically, means it could see publication any time from late summer onwards.

From Newsarama’s initial coverage of the project:

Nury’s pitch for I Am Legion reads:

December, 1942.

The global conflict has reached a fever pitch. The Nazis are at the height of their power, but the Allies have had their first victories in Stalingrad and in the Pacific. Never has the war’s outcome been so much in doubt.

Unknown to the Allies, the Nazi’s have a secret weapon, a 10 year-old girl whose gifts could force them to their knees.
“I couldn’t be more excited to have John Cassaday join us with I Am Legion,” Humanoids editor Paul Benjamin said. “This project came about because John is an avid World War II history buff. Legion is the perfect project for him to show fans all over the world his passion for this Earth shaking period of world history.

“This is not your ordinary war story. As is clearly alluded to in John’s magnificently designed preview image, there’s a bit of a supernatural twist to things that will make this the war story to remember. Also - the writer, Fabien Nury, is one of the hottest writers not only in the French graphic novel industry, but for French television and movies as well.”

Ooh, c'est trés formidable.

Maintenant, je voudrais une B.D. de Cassaday avec Joss Whedon... est-ca vrai?

(Pardon, m'écrire du Francais est terrible...)

I really like the idea of some work from Cassadya available primarily in France...

But that's probably because I'm French...

Your English is better than my GCSE-level French (which admittedly I haven't used at all in over three years...)

Mwahahaha.
You can't use my mistypings against me.
There's probably some international agreement against that.

I thought I was using my mistypings against me...

Hmm... I know Nury for his TV/cinema writing, but his graphic novel experience is rather limited... WEST was ok, but only co-written by him.

Anyone knows anything else written by him?

Ahh well, I'll have to order the French graphic novel in May then Nothing better than reading something in the original language

Does anyone know if this is going to be published in North America in the graphic album format Humanoids usually uses or is it going to be like a DC hardcover? And how many pages is it?

Ooohhh.. Legion. Not Legend.

"I AM LEGION"

I get it now. Really, I'm not that slow - just misguided.

Last we heard from Humanoids/DC, they didn't like the hardcover album format and wanted to find a better way to present the material to the bookstores.

Such a shame.

If anyone is here is familiar with Bible scripture you might recall a quick story about Jesus Christ driving a LEGION of demons out of a man and into a herd of pigs...when asked who he was the man replied..."I am Legion..."...

anybody think THIS is our supernatural twist?...I think so...but I guess I'll either have to learn French or wait till it comes out here in the US....

I agree, the European hardcover editions of comics are really nice. Maybe they'll print some first in hardcover, then soft a few months later, like DC usually does here in the U.S.?

For an earlier version of this story...

I wouldn't be surprised if the solicitation of the American edition is in next month Previews, which would mean a July release.

By the way, this book ships on May 4th, the same day than "Trigs Vol. 1", written by James Hudnall.

What are we looking at.. 56 pages? It'll be interesting to see how Cassaday's pacing plays out in the book, considering the layout and shots he's chosen in the preview images. Looks very brisk, but I guess the words are there to slow you down.

Hah I knew those 4 years of French in H.S. and a couple in college would be good for something!

Seriously, seems interesting, might give this a shot when it comes to the states.

Speaking of DC/Humanoids has anything been scheduled by them yet?

I'm still dying for the third volume of INCAL which was going to reprint the Mobious stuff I missed out on the first time.

I wouldn't mind some cheaper sofcovers of some of those other Jodo stuff like the TechnoPriests either.

Sigh, looking at Humanoids output and looking at Marvel and even most of DC makes me ashamed of American comics.

Ah well, as long as there are great stories somewhere out there!

In case you don't know, I actually met Travis Charest in Paris about a year ago, and he was working with Jodo on a MetaBarons project. I suppose he's still on it.
And be sure that when it comes out, it'll be in French first, then in English (Humanoids policy).
But a project with Jodo AND Charest:

Humanoids has a policy on this? I could understand it if there was. I guess they don't want to undercut the sales of the french edition with a quickly released english edition, though I am not sure how much of a crossover market there would be.

Anyone have any idea ofn what the format this will be? If its one of those big sexy hardcovers I might have to brush up on my french (all 4 words of it). Cassaday at that size would be fantastic. I am really curious to know what format the DC translated versions of the Humanoid works will be. Hope their big.

Yeh I vaguely recall it! I'm looking forward to it, but I tend not to get TOO excited about something until I see it actually scheduled within the next half or so.

Of course since the third trade of Incal was scheduled for the states WAY back last July my excitement level is still running over at the moment. Can hardly contain myself...

BTW, on that French first policy does that mean the Butch Guice stuff comes out in french format first then? I won't be waiting for his project. I just hate having to translate is all, it's not something I do much and I have little patience to muddle through it. Oh well, it does force me to take the time to appreciate the art more!

Actually, I don't know if it's a marketing issue, or simply a historical issue (I tend to prefer the second one).
French and europeans artists are the ones behind Humanoids, with Enki Bilal being the most successful.

In France, I've never seen any other format. All my Humanoids are "sexy" hardcovers. We don't have any softcover, neither comics size hardcover from this publisher.

No, but a little excited nevertheless

I've no idea on that one, but I suppose so.
