Rob Vollmar -- In the interests of full disclosure, I must note that I've known Rob for years and have worked with him at a couple of different comics websites. Over the years, I've come to respect Rob's taste in comics more than anyone else I've ever known. He can spot talent years ahead of its time, and I don't think he's ever steered me wrong, introducing me to the works of, among others, Renee French, Paul Hornschemeier and Phoebe Gloeckner.
More importantly, though, I've had the unique pleasure of watching Rob himself grow as a comics creator, first as the writer of the Eisner-nominated graphic novel
The Castaways with artist Pablo Callejo, and soon with Bluesman, which will be serialized in three parts before eventual (one hopes) collection as a single graphic novel.
I've had a good, long look at most of the script for
Bluesman, and it's one of the most thoughtful, moving and human stories I've ever read in any form. Once Pablo finishes illustrating it and it reaches readers, I am confident the world will finally see the great storytelling gift Rob has.
Bluesman should be an easy sell outside the comics market, and should, if there's any justice at all, be available in music shops and perhaps adapted to film with Clint Eastwood directing.
Beyond that, I'm certain that even more great works are waiting inside Rob and will unfold themselves to the world in the fullness of time. I'm delighted he agreed to answer the second Newsarama installment of the Five Questions. Thanks as always to Matt Brady for giving the 5Q its new home here.
