CASANOVA #1

Image Comics and creator Matt Fraction has provided Newsarama with the first seven pages of June’s Casanova #1 by Fraction and Gabriel Ba. Pubilshed in the “Fell” format, that is, sixteen pages for $1.99, the debut issue is full sized, i.e., 32 pages, but still carries the $1.99 cover price.

In April, we spoke with Fraction about his new series, and his leading man:

“Casanova Quinn is a Gentleman of Leisure, and he takes his leisure as he finds it-- wine, women, song, gambling, forgery, no holds barred psychic combat, or perhaps even dabbling in the lucrative field of international art thievery. He’s got apartments, estates, and bungalows scattered across the globes and he speaks a dozen languages flawlessly. He’s charming and bold and slick like liquid mercury.

“He’s... I wanted to say “amoral” but really he’s just ‘unmoral.’ I mean, Cass knows the difference between right and wrong, and he cares about certain aspects of the social contract but... not the aspects that are boring, I guess.

“Like all surly and angry young men, he’s rebelling. In his case, against his father, the creator and operator of E.M.P.I.R.E., a superglobal law enforcement agency, and his twin sister Zephyr who is very much Daddy’s Girl.

“Cass is a highly talented layabout: filthy rich and left to his own devices by his father, allowed to do as he will as long as nobody gets hurt. A black sheep, if you will, that chooses to make a living through any number of unsavory ways. When the book opens, for example, Cass has gone to steal the Seychelle ruby...”

And thus we get into the preview…

Interesante.

This is worthy of a look, and possible subsequent pick-up.

I was inititally planning to pass on this and am still leaning that way.

I love the format, but that isn't the only reason I bought Fell when it came out.

I'll certainly flip through it though.

Holy hell...this looks great! Nice use of simple color. A lot goes a long way for sure.

I look forward to picking it up as I've yet to read Fraction's work.

I originally was going to get this but my interest in it has kind of waned. I really like the Fell format, but the preview doesn't make this look that special.

Very Jerry Cornelius. Hell, even more Jerry Cornelius than King Mob was, at first glance.

Nice art, too: a bit Andy Kuhn, a bit Eduardo Risso. Think I'll give this a shot.

Looks promising. I like the art a lot, the whole two-toned quality of it. Or rather, three-toned if you include white.

This title looks pretty good, It's a definite buy for me. These 16 page comic books are an interesting experament. They would work better if they are able to come out anywhere on a timely monthly schedule.( yep, that was a dig at Fell, and most of images titles)

This book is exactly what I've always wanted to see more of at Image.

It makes me want to work that much harder next time around.
