JIM REAPER: WEEK ONE

Silent Devil has provided Newsarama with a five-page preview of Jim Reaper: Week One coming from the publisher in July.

The solicitation for the one-shot issue reads:

Diamond order code: MAY06 3369
Full Color 40 pages
Story by Dwight L. MacPherson
Art by Mathieu Benoit
SRP: $3.95

Description:

Fearing an imminent breakdown, the Grim Reaper decides to take a Holiday. After an exhaustive search for a replacement, he finds only his cousin's nephew's son to collect the souls of those who are perishing. Enter the timid Jim Reaper. The only problem is that Jim is scared of his own shadow and his first week on the job may ultimately prove the destruction of his own immortal soul-- or worse.

Thumbs up The next dimension...

EXCELLENT STUFF! Cute... but with a nice lil' horror-ish vibe going for it.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this becomes a cartoon series down the road...

Reaping and sewing,

Dwight's a great guy. This is humor at its greatest. In horror form. Great stuff indeed. This will be on my pull list.

This is such a rip off of 'Mort' and 'Soul Music' by Terry Pratchett.

Which itself was a rip-off/spoof of The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman, or possibly Piers Anthony's Incarnations Of Immortality, or maybe Death Takes A Holiday from 1932, or...the list goes on.
Death as a physical embodiment is not a new idea, lots of people have used it, most recently in the Death Jr books, but Dwight's taking a slightly more cartoony feel to it, and personally I think it looks great.
I read the back-ups in Hack/Slash, and thought the artwork was very appealing, and pretty funny. I'll be checking out the series, certainly.

Nah, it was more the idea of an stand-in for Death that I was referring to.
But Dwight say's never read them so kinda hard for that to be the inspiration.......

Right on.
I love irony. I think it is an excellent comedic device.
I mean--a cowardly grim reaper. What could be more ironic--and humorous-- than that?
