View Full Version : How will The Spirit fit into the DCU at large?

By which I mean, the Batman team-up aside, do you think much will be done to establish him as existing in the same universe as the other DC heroes or will he be self-contained? Do you think he'll guest appear in other people's titles or vice versa? The tone of his comic makes it hard for me to think of anyone it can really blend with. He comes across like a more lovably goofy version of the Question (though I know the opposite is probably true)to me. I kinda expect at some point for it to be revealed in a Crisis-related/Monitor/multiverse story that he's only recently been made a part of New Earth history, much like the Charlton and Fawcett Characters were written as coming from seperate versions of Earth.

Hopefully, he won't.

If DC has any sense they will let The Spirit stay in its own little universe FAR away from the rest of the DC titles. Maybe a Superman/Spirit one-shot a year or so down the road. MAYBE.

There's no need for him to be in the same universe, or to interact with the rest of the DCU. The Spirit works fine alone. However, he does reside in Central City, no? One way to subtly hint that the Spirit is in the DCU is to have the flash ( Jay garrick maybe?) speed by briefly. I guess you can do that with any superhero, but it would be appropiate w/ The Flash.

My thoughts exactly.

They shouldn't do that at all.

Keep it separate

I could have swore I read somewhere that they'll keep him by himself for about a year then start to intergrate him into DCU.

O_o

Perhaps I'm thinking of something else...

He won't. I'm pretty sure they're going to leave well enough alone.

Though Spirit on the JLA would be hilarious.

The Spirit takes place in the DCU proper, but in one of those quiet little cities that nothing of notice ever happens in. Supervillains are too buisy knocking over Coast City, or trying to destroy Metropolis or whatever.

At least, that's the answer I was given.

No it won't.

...it would be a Eel O'Brien (Plasticman) ripoff...at best.

Darwyn has said that his book is in its own little universe. Its not affected by the DCU no more than the characters can make appearances.

will eisner estate still owns the character so i doubt too much DCU interaction.

Althoug, Eisner himself was personally thrilled at the idea of his character interacting with greats.

Hell be in the weird Swamp Thing limbo area where he's sort of part of the DCU but he really isn't.

The trouble with shared universes is that a lot of characters that need a specific context to function rationally in get ____ed over. Like Captain Marvel.

I love the Spirit one of my Favourite characters , I don't think it would be a good idea if he were to be incorporated into the DCU, although I think it would be fun to give it ago, maybe,
but what the Hell do I know !!!!

This is probably the worst thing that they could do. I wouldn't mind seeing a team up with the Spirit and an occasional DCU character but the adventures should exist apart from everything else.

I wouldn't want too many "interactions," although it'd be a kick to see Spirit and Plastic Man in some sort of bizarre romp (Jack Cole cnxn). I could also see The Question being fodder for a team up tale, although it'd have to be the JLU version perhaps.

Oh, I wouldn't want a ton of team ups either. And only ones that were really considered "appropriate" for the character. Although I think that Darwyn could make almost anyone work. Almost. :)

what he said.

Leave the Spirit as is...but I'd love a Superman/Spirit one shot next year.

I agree that they should be kept separate. But then again, part of me wants to see Spirit teaming up with some of the DCU superheroes. So I guess if Darwyn brought them in and used them in the Spirit book it could work, but the last thing I want to see is Spirit being mishandled by anyone and everyone who get their hands on him in the DCU proper.

I also don't want to see Denny standing around in the back of the crowd in the next DCU Crossover Event. Keep The Spirit in its own little world, far removed from the mainstream sooperheroes. If there are to be any team-ups, they should be confined solely to The Spirit's book, and be lighthearted in tone. Keep that DCU cancer from infecting The Spirit the way it did poor Captain Marvel!!!

Guest-shots that might work:
Superman
Plastic Man (i think both strips ran in Police Comics back in the 40s)
The Shadow
Green Hornet
The Sandman
Another Batman team-up

No thanks. Keep that ESprite-de-Cardboard away from the BAT.

...after the depiction in the BM/S #1 special, if I never see another character assassination of the BAT like that it will be too soon.

Hey, I don't know if you're aware of this, but Batman used to have a tv show back in the sixties! You should watch it, I think you'd dig it a lot.

I have watched it (and even have quite a few 'net procured' episodes), and I did/do dig it a lot...

...but as you said those were the SIXTIES. Time has changed and the comic characters have changed along with it...well, they have unless they have been stuck in a time-freeze/limbo for decades.
