Audio and Video Podcasts Will Transform NY Comic Con into Year-Round ‘Convention Without Walls’

Comics, graphic novels, anime, manga, TV and movies will be featured and available to public for free at www.nycccast.com

Norwalk, CT, January 22, 2007: In a significant development that will transform it into a year-round national event, New York Comic Con (NYCC) has announced that it will launch an audio and video podcast available free to the general public.

The podcast episodes, which will begin almost immediately after New York Comic Con (February 23-25) concludes, will feature interviews, anime clips, previews from TV shows and films and highlights from panel discussions at the show. The podcasts are expected to be released for several months following the convention and will remain available throughout the year. Fans may subscribe to the podcasts through the official podcast web site at www.nycccast.com or through popular podcast portals such as iTunes. They will be able to download the podcasts to their iPod, portable player or cell phone, or they will be able to watch or listen to the episodes directly on their computer through streaming technology.

This new podcast venture is similar to a program that was launched at BookExpo America (BEA) in May, 2006. New York Comic Con and BookExpo America are both managed by Reed Exhibitions and the podcast initiative at both conventions is produced in partnership with BurstMarketing. In its inaugural presentation, BEA’s podcast had 60,000 downloads and 220,000 unique visitors from 25 countries to the podcast website.

“I like to think of this venture as a ‘convention without walls’ that will put New York Comic Con in front of a limitless number of people, anytime and anywhere,” notes Greg Topalian, Show Director for NYCC. “This allows us to take our dynamic programming beyond a room of a few thousand people and showcase it to an audience that extends throughout the country, and even the world. The benefit to fans, exhibitors, as well as our honored guests is enormous as it provides everyone with a flexible, accessible, national platform.”

The New York Comic Con podcast will have approximately 36 episodes in several categories, including:

The Creators will feature interviews with honored guests such as Stephen King, Stan Lee, George Perez, Marc Silvestri, Brian K. Vaughan, Paul Dini, Jeff Smith and J.M. Straczynski. We also will feature a trip down Artist Alley where we will inteview comic, graphic novel and manga artists, writers and publishers talking about their latest work, newest characters and fan favorites.

Anime: 2007 American Anime Awards will feature clips and interviews with winners at the American Anime Awards which is set to debut at New York Comic Con.

ICv2 Graphic Novel Conference will offer highlights and interviews from the panels and speakers on new trends shaping pop culture.

Games Update will feature the latest news and previews of electronic games.

The Screening Room will feature clips and previews of major movie and TV releases such as Ghost in the Shell and Shinobi.

Buzz Report will feature interviews of attendees of NYCC and ask them what’s the buzz, what’s hot, what’s cool.

Just last year around Con season I was telling my friend how cool it would be if some of the major cons Did podcasts and some Video webcasts Live from the Conventions.

Livewire -- there are plenty of podcasters (both audio and video) at all the cons these days. Tons of material comes out of all the major cons now, and a lot quicker than what the "official" podcasts can come out with. We'll see how NYCCon works it. But I don't know -- the thought of hearing panels recorded months ago in podcast format doesn't sound too exciting to me. A lot of that stuff is often VERY time sensitive.

That having been said, though, this could be a great thing if it's done right. If the convention has its act together and can record off the sound boards in the room (I'll assume each room has microphones and a mixing board like San Diego does) then they can have some compelling content to share with the rest of the world. Tech conferences do this kind of thing all the time, even with a built-in time delay to give those who paid for access to the conference an advantage.

But so much of what they seem breathlessly excited to announce is just an advertising compilation. Free previews and trailers is what they're excited about? Those are already on the companies' websites and on fan pages. And VERY time sensitive. And the rest of it will be covered by the veritable army of web folks already at the con with their cameras, audio recorders, and video cameras.

We'll see.

I've been wondering all year when a con would figure out that they could podcast their panel discussions. This is a nice step in the right direction but why not just record the whole discussion and put it up there for the world to hear?

DC Ciomics did last year. The DC comics podcast featured all the panels from San Diego that involved DC Comics.

Didn't Marvel's podcast include some audio from their panels, too?

If not, I know we carried audio and video from some at CBR. =)

This is the best idea I've heard in a while. Good that SOMEONE in the industry knows how to play UP instead of down the goodwill being engendered by all the "events" and increased sales of the last couple years.

Ted Rall, though...meh. Dude has no respect for comics as an art form--which is reasonable enough when you see his artwork, I guess....

Let's hope they organize this better than the convention itself. This show was such a mess last year that I'm not even bothering to go this time around. I wonder if they'll have a video podcast of security telling attendees they aren't allowed back on the con floor after they stepped off to buy a hot dog at the concession stand.

Last year I just split and went to the New York comic shops.
