View Full Version : Superman 657 was one of the best penciled comics I've ever seen

Seriously, I was blown away by Pacheco's work on this issue. Every page just left my mouth hanging open. In an age where so many artists seem to be coasting, I really appreciate that Carlos seems to be putting his heart and soul into his Superman work.
And he's really outshining his Action Comics counterpart who seems to be receiving most of the fanfare.

Even Busiek, who I often have an issue with, is spinning a really good yarn which no doubt is helping to inspire Carlos to do the kind of work he's doing.

I don't know where this issue has placed on the top 100, but it'll be sad to see if Superman is still languishing outside the top 20. People don't know what they're missing. Superman has to be up there for the best ongoing superhero title currently on the shelves.

I'll agree with all that. Normally I'm not that big of a fan of Pacheco, but his work on Superman has been a real treat for the eyes.
I said in another thread that the writing and art on Superman and Action have made both these books the best comics on the stands right now.
You're right, some folks really don't know what they're missing.

For me, at least, Pacheco has never been able to recapture his form on Avengers Forever.

I wouldn't say he's outshining Kubert by any means (they're both doing excellent work) but Carlos is certainly outdoing himself on this book at the moment. Kurt is turning in some of the best work of his career as well. The Superman titles are just firing on all cylinders right now and I couldn't be happier. I recently purged my pull list a bit, but this was literally the one area of titles I knew for sure I wasn't touching.

Are you a big 'Old-School' Avengers fan?

It's better if you are, God knows, if I hadn't been well-versed in Avengers minuataie, I wouldn't have liked it nearly as much.

i'd say he's outshining Kubert by every means (except for that godawful haircut he gave Lois -- blech), but that's just me.

the two-page spread of the wreckage that once was Metropolis in the last issue was one of the most impressive things i've seen in a while. just gorgeous stuff.

Not especially. I respected the characters but never got into them. Actually, the weird thing is that as I get older, the more I start to dig Marvel characters that didn't appeal to me as much as a kid and the books I thought were cool just mover further into the distance.

I digress, but I probably know enough to get through the trade. :)

As long as you know your way around Pym, you'll be OK.

I have a hard time making a one-to-one comparison. It's vanilla and chocolate. They're both great. I tend to lean towards Carlos in general though.

The one where it was cracked in half? Holy god that was amazing.

Totally, agree with this. Instead of softening her image, which is really what they should be doing, they make her seem even more more like the queen bitch career woman. Ah well, I'm used to not having an attractive Lois anymore, DC seem hell bent on making her seem unappealing.

What I wouldn't give for the old Curt Swan bob (seemed to work pretty well for Teri Hatcher too).

Pacheco and Reis are easily up there right behind Perez as my favorite DC artists at the moment.

Oh man, ranking faves at DC would be hard. Pacheco, Van Sciver, Igle, Perez, Mahnke, Eaglesham, Justiniano, Porter, Sprouse...

It goes on and on and on.

Not as bad but yeah, long story. Wasn't the current Captain Marvel introduced in that book?

Genis?

He wasn't introduced, but the look and status-quo (Nega-Banded to Rick Jones) for the 1st PAD series were introduced.

Oh, well in that case I'm proper ____ed. :(Nah, most, if not each of the issues had a bibliography of sorts explaining the connection of a certain cameo or event. Similar to the Earth X trilogy, Avengers Forever dives head-first into Marvel continuity yet makes it accessible for folks that don't know every detail (like Mr. Busiek obviously does:p).

I'm telling you, Kurt's a machine. They need to have a face-off book one day where he goes head to head with Mark Waid. Instead of writing a new reader friendly book I want to see the most convoluted obscure continuity book ever written. We old schoolers deserve this. :D
