View Full Version : MARVEL, EA SIGN GAME, CHARACTER DEAL

Electronic Arts and Marvel today announced that they’d entered into an agreement which will see EA develop a new generation of fighting game to star Marvel characters.

Rather than pitting the Marvel characters against one another, the games will have them facing off with a new, original set of EA heroes. As part of the deal, EA has granted Marvel the exclusive worldwide licensing rights for all consumer products and media licenses for the new EA characters, as well as the right to publish comic books which will introduce the characters.

On Marvel’s side of the deal, the company will make over 100 characters available for game development to EA, but does not cover the Hulk or Punisher.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for EA to create new characters for fighting games that can be exploited through our global merchandise licensing machine to fuel sales in many other product categories," said Allen Lipson, President and CEO of Marvel Enterprises in a press release.

"It's a unique opportunity, partnering with Marvel to bring their renowned Super Heroes into original videogame environments, as well as providing us an opportunity to create new heroes that will live in games, comic books and other licensing or media opportunities that Marvel presents," said John Riccitiello, President and COO for Electronic Arts. "Fans of both traditional Marvel comics as well as video games have a lot to be excited about as they will be able to fight it out between established Marvel Super Heroes and EA's new heroes in original scenarios," added Riccitiello.

The Marvel and EA Super Hero based fighting games are currently under development for multiple game platforms at EA's studio, EAC, in British Columbia. The license grants EA the rights to develop game titles for all current and next generation videogame consoles, handheld platforms and PCs.

It is anticipated that the games will be readied for a 2005 release. This is the first games deal announced since Ames Kirshen was recently named (http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8139) as Manager of Game Development, a new position within the company.

I'd like to see something like the Sims, where you can grow your super hero creations over time in an open-ended environment.

That actually sounds like a great idea. But I think with the fighting it would be better suited to some sort of hockey like game, and with flying heros, maybe something along quidditch...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

First they drop their license with Capcom to work exclusively with Activision (Official Slogan: Statistics prove that EVENTUALLY we'll be able to make a good game!), then they drop activision to design fighting games with EA? I don't want photorealistic 3d characters! I miss the good old days of X-Men vs. Street Fighter! I remember the good old days in college when my friend would bust out the Saturn and we'd play Marvel Vs. Street Fighter until the wee hours of the morning. Where else do you get to see Omega Red yell 'Must destroy the Weapon X' every five minutes? There was nothing more fun then thrashing mecha-zangief with good ol' Omega Red and Shuma Gorath.

Wow. That is one HECK of a ramble session there. I'm posting it anyways.

Josh out.

so they've gone from a company that can't make a good game for anyone over 12 to save their live, to a company that personifies the term "mediocrity" in nearly every whitebread vanilla they've got. Joy. I guess the the differance is that EA's mediocrity sells a million copies a year. Then again, so does Justin Timberlake.

I hope this deal doesn't kill any chance of future Marvel Vs. Capcom games, too.

If anyone at Marvel is reading this, PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS DEAL WITH EA STOP PRODUCTION OF MORE MARVEL VS. CAPCOM GAMES!! I LOVE MARVEL VS. CAPCOM!!!

EA PUBLISHED Freedom Force. Just like Interplay PUBLISHED Baldur's Gate. EA's in house does Def Jam Vendetta, Madden, and the Streetz series. Sims is also PUBLISHED by EA. Maxis was the dev team. I could be wrong on the Sims, though.

This is a fantastic step for Marvel. It's an acknowledgement that video games are light years ahead of turning kids into lifelong fans...so Marvel took the natural step and signed with the best. While DC keeps flinging out garbage like the Aquaman game [shudder], Marvel's got a real chance to blow up the field.

This is almost like the Disney-Pixar deal (before all the in-fighting), in that a creative company like Marvel is signing with a master in the field of marketing and distribution.

I wouldn't be surprised if we also saw some marvel characters appear as unlockable characters in other EA games, a la Iron Man in Tony Hawk Underground...how cool would it be if, when playing Madden 2006, you could replace Ricky Williams with the Juggernaut??

Maxis was the development team. Although no one can argue the power of EA's sportsline (even though I prefer MLB slugfest series for sheer pleasure).

However, EA is now also the developer of the C&C series (westwood having been dissolved into them) so even though Generals wasn't traditional Command and Conquer, it was still a pretty good game.

Actually, there was announcement some time ago about a massive multi-player game from Marvel and Universal. Here's a snippet of a more recent press release:

Recently, Marvel and Universal's interactive games division -- Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) -- forged a partnership to create massive multi-player subscription-based online games. Like Sony's Everquest and Electronic Arts Ultima, the Marvel multi-player online games will enable millions of people around the world to play against one another simultaneously in a virtual, persistent universe.

....especially since EA has a track record of making rushed, mediocre games full of bugs. I for one am not looking forward to seeing cr@ppy iterations of Marvel characters. Sure, EA published The Sims but the developer who made it is responsible(Maxis) and Freedom Force may have also been published by EA but Irrational Games is the developer. Command and Conquer Generals was made by EA L.A., which basically rushed the bug-filled game after it assimialted Westwood. All of EAs in-house games made for the Xbox don't utilize any of the the Xboxs hardware but instead are made from the begining for the Playstation 2 which results in games with average graphics, long load times, and small levels=limited gameplay. Their in-house PC games are rushed and released unfinished with poor support. Yeah, you can say I don't want to see another mediocre comic game like Superman, Batman or Aquaman until Marvel gets a developer to be excited about. Someone like Bungie, Blizzard or Bioware would be good

Disagree on using SC2 graphics. I feel a cartoony feeling is a necessity. Hence my love of the old school MvC titles. If you use photorealism, you're left with Mutant Academy (Shudder). Some projects work though, like 1602 (which is drawn less cartoony). I think a Smash Bros. type melee game would be great for most team books and such. For a good example of a comic fighting game, take a look at either of the Naruto games released in Japan.

Blame the programmers not the publishing company. The games from EA's in house staff - SSX, STREET, MADDEN, ESPN, etc. etc. - are great games. X-Men Squad Based Strategy a la X-Com

Hell's Kitchen GTA-esque game where you run missions for various supervillains (ie- Kingpin) and have run ins with Superheroes. You can call it 'Henchman' or something.

Smash Brothers Melee-esque Marvel fighting game

Like them or not, EA games are about as high profile as you get, so it can only benefit Marvel, and in turn the comics industry by getting exposure from them.
Hopefully since the deal involves EA characters and ties to comics you'll have some comic product that directly relates to the games.

stephanie I mentioned this on another topic talking about marvel vs capcom ... I guess i could do a search for it and post it

Capcom let the license go after mediocre sales of Marvel games. Activision grabbed the Movie licenses for Xmen and Spiderman *they also have Iron Man now.

Activision is still making the Xmen and Spiderman (ironman also)

EA has the rights to use Marvel characters in FIGHTING GAMES only.

and it is the comic rights. not the movie rights

because other companies have those characters.

Punisher, Spiderman, Xmen, Iron man, Captain America (still floating around) etc.

I dont believe this agreement lets EA put spidey in Madden football.. I could be wrong since I dont have it in front of me. But Activision still has the Spiderman movie rights as far as I know.

This is like the Lord of the Rings books vs movies rights (EA and Unviersal Vivendi)

anyways.. EA isnt known for there fighting games so I believe this is a mistake on Marvels part. SEGA would have been a better choice.. but maybe they passed on it as well.

Yes Capcom's Marvel games were fan favorites but were more cult hits and didnt make big money. Look up the TRST for sales.

but I LOVE those games and it is sad that we wont have any more (at least in the next several years)

Have you seen SPAWN in soul calibur 2?? He looks pretty good.. and SC2 isnt photo realistic.. it is very stylized. Its not cellshaded but I think the characters would have looked very nice with that team and engine.

Think Wolverine vs Voldo.

OH Z-Axis is making two games for activision Xmen and Ironman.. you can do a search and look it up on their website.

ESPN is not from EA.-Madden?-That game and every other in-house Xbox release has had a lack of additions compared to other platform versions of the game. Jack,
Freedom Force rules, you are so right. I thought you might like to know that there is a killer Avengers mod available for FF. It doesn't change the game much, but all characters, heroes and villians are changed to Avengers/Marvel characters (Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Doc Doom, etc.) all with accurate powers and abilities, although hearing Mentor's cornball speeches coming from Hawkeye is both ridiculously funny and disturbing. It's well-worth the download

Ok, first off, Capcom is a great company, but apparently everyone who works tere is lazy. Seriously, everyone loves street fighter, but how long does it take them to come out with SF games? FOREVER!

Their marvel games, even up to the Vs Series were great, but they screwed it up by making no major improvement except for the addition of a few characters every version. I mean, They had a goldmine sitting right in front of them, first off Marvel characters, who everyone is familiar with, and then SNK characters, who every gamer knows and loves, but yet, they do nothing with it. Capcom vs SNK was great, but it sucked because of minor things. I mean, they didn't even bother to redesign the character sprites in order to fit with the design of the SNK characters. They made it look jut like Mugen. Did anyone see Morigan in Capcom vs SNK 2? She looked like crap...

Sega would've been better, but not for fighting games... SNK would be the best choice, but they're too small and unpredictable for a company like marvel. EA's not a bad choice, the might not make the greatest games, but at least they put out games consistently. Unlike activsion which just plain sucks and makes games look very, very ugly!

Oooookay. So, you're not upset that they make "lousy games", you're upset they don't OVERdevelop and create whole new engines for games for a console that will go the way of the Dreamcast in a year.

Oookay.

Most things are designed for the PS2 because, like it or not, the PS2 is the best selling console on the market. Without getting into yet ANOTHER X-Box v PS2 Argument, the bottom line is it is not financially feasable for EA to create an entirely new engine for games on separate consoles. They take existing games designed with the PS2 in mind and port them to the other two consoles.

If you don't like it, Fig, I suggest you go buy a Playstation 2.

This is an excellent move for Marvel. EA puts out excellent games for consoles people actually buy.

FIG
02-07-2004, 09:53 PM
Not "financially feasible"?Why type of b.s. is that? Sure you can swallow EA's official comment but it doesn't make sense when you see numerous other developers, most of which are smaller, releasing games that take advantage of the Xboxs hardware. Some developers, the smart ones, like Ubisoft, make the game from the ground up for the Xbox first. Not because of the reason you cited regarding it not being"financially feasible", but because they build their games for the most powerful hardware first, then dumb it down or downgrade it when they release the Gamecube and Playstation 2 ports. This is happening with Splinter Cell 2 and the same thing that happened with Splinter Cell 1. And as far me getting a Playstation 2, that would be the stupidest thing to do, to downgrade and buy a console with no harddrive or any of the other features in the Xbox, like being able to burn music. Plus, this year I will be seeing the release of games Sonys Playstation 2 will never and could never run. Games like Halo 2, Doom 3, Thief 3, Starcraft Ghost, Jade Empire (from Bioware), BC, Fable, Sudeki, Ninja Gaiden, Steel Battalion : Line of Contact, Half-Life 2, Unreal 2, Unreal 2004, Dead or Alive : Online, etc..,. Yeah, I want to trade my console for a Playstation 2. As far as the Xbox going the way of the Dreamcast, you can expect the Gamecube to go that route instead come 2005/2006. Microsoft has already leaked the specs form their next console, which will have 3 64 bit processors. And hey, I still stand by my opinion that EA's games suck and are years behind the industry standard both graphically and gameplay-wise, which is why I am bummed Marvel wasted their time going to this mediocre game company. And I also don't have the patience to wait 2+ years for a game when I can get it on a pc. Why would I buy a Mac to play games?-So I can choose from 16 outdated titles?

NewFun#6
02-07-2004, 10:19 PM
Speaking of outdated, why ANOTHER fighting game? Haven't we had like a zillion of them already with only one or two stand-outs? Sure the Marvel vs whoever ones were great, but aren't we all pretty sick of all the other variations on this theme?

Personally, I'd love to see some sort of hybrid of Freedom Force and the FIRST Spider-Man PC game from a couple years back, the comics-based one, not the movie tie-in one. That game seemed, at the time, like it was going to turn the tide of crappy super-hero games, but alas even it's own sequel was lackluster at best.

Sigh.

Yet another "X-Box is a SUPERIOR MACHINE, WE GETS NO RESPECT!" argument.

Sigh.

YES, I mean "Not financially feasable". It makes absolutely no sense for a company to develop a game, spend millions of dollars doing it, then have to redesign it for a new, LESSER SELLING CONSOLE. YES, that makes NO FINANCIAL SENSE.

Half Life 2? It's gonna be a PC PORT. It's not "designed specifically for the X-Box" it's a freakin' port of a PC game. Same with Doom 2 and a majority of the other games you listed in the tiny little list of exclusives.

I really don't care if you don't like it. I really don't care if it doesn't make logical sense to you, y'know, with all the pretty bells a whistles the X-Box can do. I'm gonna put this in bold just for you, FIG, since I don't think you get it.

THE PLAYSTATION 2 SELLS MUCH ... **MUCH** BETTER THAN THE X-BOX DOES.

A grand majority of people who own a gaming console own a PS2.

I'm not saying the XBox isn't "More Powerful", I'm saying people are buying a PS2 despite that. The reason why people do that a numerous, and it's an entirely different discussion.

So, EA develops a Marvel license. They develop it for the PS2, then easily port it to an X-Box and Gamecube, and very little extra money needs to be spend in porting it. The majority of buyers will buy the PS2 version, so the money is well spent.

Millions of dollars?-Are you stupid?-The average cost for a game is 4 million, and I'm talking about a developer who is starting up too, not a well established one with tons of resources at its disposal already like EA. Stop claiming numbers when you haven't even worked in the game industry like I have.

You're argument being?-I never said those games weren't PC ports, I said the Sony PS2 couldn't handle those games so what are you trying to say?-Those are just a small list of exclusives as well, I didn't go into a dictionary and list the exclusives coming from small developers. I listed 5 pc ports, the rest are Xbox exclusives.

PC ports=Doom 3, Thief 3, Half-Life 2, Unreal 2, Unreal 2004
Xbox Exclusives=Halo 2, Starcraft Ghost, Jade Empire (from Bioware), BC, Fable, Sudeki, Ninja Gaiden, Steel Battalion : Line of Contact, Dead or Alive : Online, Breakdown, Chronicles of Riddick, Enclave 2, etc...

A grand majority of people who own a gaming console own a PS2....

You don't car if I get it?-Then why post that long message directed at me, you dunce? I gave a specific example where instead of developing for an outdated console like EA does, a company, Ubisoft, developed their game for the Xbox and then ported it and 'dumbed' it down for the other, weaker hardware. Whats the point of developing all games for the average hardware when it can be done just as easily for the more powerful hardware and then dumbing it down?-Do you see what I'm, saying?-Why choose one console over the other when theirs clearly no point to it?-Developing it for the Xbox first and then dumbing it down would not affect the budget at all because the Playstation 2 port would be made, therefore you would still make the same amount of sales in the playstation 2 demographic.-Do you see what I'm getting at?-Has it sunk in you know nothing of game development and your argument falls on nothing more than ignorance?

....A grand majority of people who own a gaming console own a PS2. I'm not saying the XBox isn't "More Powerful", I'm saying people are buying a PS2 despite that. The reason why people do that a numerous, and it's an entirely different discussion....

A grand majority own a playstation 2 because either they're ignorant about what the Xbox is capable of, don't have money for another console or could care less about buying another one. My brother has a Playstation 2 but he just bought an Xbox and got LIVE because he can afford it. Does he think the Playstation is stupid and outdated?-Yes. Most game consumers also don't know that the Xbox is more powerful or the fact that LIVE is unbelievably amazing. Take into account the reason why Sonys console sells more is because it came out 1-2 years before and therefore has a much larger library of games. That is why it outsells the Xbox.

So, EA develops a Marvel license. They develop it for the PS2, then easily port it to an X-Box and Gamecube, and very little extra money needs to be spend in porting it. The majority of buyers will buy the PS2 version, so the money is well spent.

Ignorance must be bliss for you. Since EA makes a game, do you think it would cost them more money to start developing it for the Xbox first?-I mean they are going to make ports because they always release their games on all platforms correct? So the answer to you is NO, the budget would not be affected at all and if it would it wouldn't be significantly in the millions as you so foolishly described. They are making the ports, ports which are going to be made anyways so if EA was smart they'd be following in the footsteps of Ubisoft and developing all their games for the Xbox first since that way they could that way add larger levels, no loading times, better graphics and therefore their games would offer better gameplay. What does EA do instead?-Develop for the less powerful console, put average effort in their games and rush them out the door full of bugs and with little support.

It all goes back to the deal that broke down with Microsoft over LIVE. EA wanted to take control of some LIVE servers while Microsoft didn't want to hand over some control to EA, a network that Microsoft built. EA wanted to reserve the right to charge for people playing their games online and Microsoft wasn't okay with that because the LIVE customer is already paying $50 a year plus broadband costs. From then on Xbox consumers have seen poor support from EA on all of its ports, all because the EA president has his head so far up his @$$ that hes neglecting a demographic. We're talking about a demographic thats alive and growning with each month. LIVE already has 750, 000 subcrivers and counting so your assumptions that Microsoft is going the way of SEGA Dreamcast is idiotic not to mention ignorant. If anybody is headed in that direction, its Nintendo.

Bottom line, EA sucks and this news that they are going to be involved in Marvel games does not bode well for game consumers because we can all expect to see mediocre games starring Marvel characters in the future. Just what I've always wanted, a sh!ty Captain America game by EA.

Game boy advance sells better than Xbox

when you see people comparing xbox vs gamecube sales... you know you have a problem

there is like 70million PS2 worldwide.

and I believe only 13million xbox...

dont quote me on the exact numbers because I havent checked in a while but there is a clear WINNER and it isnt Xbox

now you can debate which system performance wise is better... but most people agree xbox is a better performing system.

But better performance isnt the only factor and most people agree with their wallet.

Sony has won the console wars again.. btw do you know PSone still sells and very WELL to.. its amazing. NOt sure why more people arent making PSone games anymore since the system is still selling almost a million a year.

PSone is the best selling console system of all time.

So will Xbox II come out swinging? I am guessing so. They have learned a Lot about this... first they learned from sega with Dreamcast (they wrote the operating system) now they tested the waters with xbox. Their next system should be AMAZING

hopefully Sony learns from some of the mistakes they made with PS2 on the developers side (making it not very efficient to work on) and PS3 will be the clear winner.

I think Nintendo will turn into Sega after losing 3 wars in a row and just develope software.

Right, generalize my argument, it makes you look all the more stupid. SIGH

Me look stupid? I'm not the one who started with the namecalling. Yes, that is exactly what you are doing. You are arguing, and DO argue later in your post that people are "ignorant", which is why the PS2 sells much better than the X-Box.

I'm not arguing the reasons why. I don't KNOW why the X-Box sells so poorly. I have an idea (charging for online play, stupid box design, horrid controls, having to pay extra for DVD playback, the idea that Microsoft, the Devil, is putting out a system), but I digress. The point is they ARE.

Developing it for the Xbox first and then dumbing it down would not affect the budget at all because the Playstation 2 port would be made

Um... because the PS2 sells better? It makes NO LOGICAL SENSE for any major company to spend ... no ... waste time and money developing a game specifically for the X-Box, then porting it to the PS2 when the great majority of the sells in that game comes from the PS2.

It really doesn't matter the reason why PS2 sells better. I'm not doubting you a bit your reasonings, nor am I doubting that the X-Box is a more powerful system. I own an X-Box and a PS2. It very well may be the PS2 came out first. It very well may be the fact the the PS1 is the best selling console in history, and the PS2 allows people to play their PS1 games. It could be the name.

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHY. WHAT MATTERS IS THE FACTS.

PS2 has 74.3 million consoles in the US. X-Box has 14.7 million. That's a HUGE difference, and any MAJOR publisher, like EA, would be daft not to develop the game for the more POPULAR (not powerful) system first. I'm sorry your X-Box heart has been hurt by EA's dissing of the X-Box, but it's all in the numbers, FIG.

No, I'm not a game publisher, so you've probably got one on me there. I am not a game developer, so I'm not privy to the going ons on how to develop a game. I will say it is simply logical to do up a game for the most popular system first.

Oh, and stop with the name-calling. I'm not calling you any names, nor am I saying you are stupid. I don't think you are stupid. I'm countering your point that EA is stupid. Let's keep this argument civil, ok?

I'm not so hot on the Marvel Fighting game idea. Maybe it's because I'm not a huge fan of the genre but I also think we have seen enogh of the Marvel charecters in this type of a game.

In my opinion this is what we need to see come out of this.

First off an Fantastic Four squad game. This could be huge IMO. How great would it be to act as the FF and go up against Doom? This is yet another genre of games that I've never been big on but done correctly and with the FF in there I could deffinetly get into this.

Next we need a marvel MMORPG. I've never gotten into MMORPGs since I'm not a real fantasy buff, and I was in the Beta for Star Wars Galaxies and was very disapointed. I think that if EA were to do an MMORPG using the MU it could be the most amazing thing we have ever seen. Think about the great possibilities here. There would be the normal MU teams like the XMen, Avengers etc etc that you could try and join but then we could also have player teams where a group could get together to form a new team in the online MU.

Last but not least I would love to see another Mele action game like the Xmen arcade game.

wow, i've never thought that this simple announcement would cause this much of a stir.

1) sure, EA has put out a clunker or two over the years and some people might argue over the way they run their business, but geezus man, do we really need yet another f-in 2D!!!! fighter with no major graphical overhauls between versions and very very little intelligent thought put into game design? i think just moving these characters away from capcom is a huge step in making them better no matter who gets the license, though yes i will miss seeing mega man and all of them, but c'mon, how many times do you need to see the same damn thing with the same damn playcontrols on the same flat 2D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! screen. the infinity gauntlet game was the first capcom marvel game, i think, and it definetly was the best one without a doubt, so that says something about where capcom was going with these characters.

2) EA puts out a lot of good games, gameplay wise, game sale wise, etc, this board has been so f-in negative about the company that brought us, in some capacity or another, madden, medal of honor, sims, FF, etc, etc, etc. how many people here bitching and moaning and complaining have spent hours upon hours upon hours playing EA games? most of you? i thought so.

3) if microsoft actually could make a controller that wasn't the worst controller ever, not charge and exhorbitant amount to play online, and most importantly wasn't made by microsoft, it would do a hell of a lot better. i'll give up a little performance to not support one of the most monopolistic, evil companies that has ever existed. i'm sure the guy posting who uses a mac would agree with me here.

anyway, i think EA is a very quality company and i can't wait to see what they come up with. maybe it'll suck, but as usual, this community just outright says it's going to definetly hate something that that is definetly going to totally suck even though hasn't even f-in come out yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or even been previewed or anything.

geezus, people get a life and try to think positive every once in awhile.

Only a couple of clunkers? anyway, unfortunately, the new generation of 2D fighters are looking FANTASTIC. Sammy vs. Capcom has all new graphics. I think Marvel is going to miss out on the new Capcom designs coming. btw, 3D games have the same problems as you point out with the 2D games. They are also becoming monotonous.

how many people here bitching and moaning and complaining have spent hours upon hours upon hours playing EA games? most of you? i thought so.
Don't assume anything. I own a grand total of ZERO EA games.

I'm a Mac user only because I simply hate Windows. I also don't think I'm giving up any performance using a Mac. I don't own an X-Box because I have almost no desire to play any X-Box games. Microsoft simply doesn't appeal to me at all. AND THE CONTROLLER REALLY DOES STINK. However, I don't mind giving up performance by using a 10 year old Morrigan sprite if it means Kobuns fighting Thanos.

anyway, i think EA is a very quality company and i can't wait to see what they come up with. maybe it'll suck, but as usual, this community just outright says it's going to definetly hate something that that is definetly going to totally suck even though hasn't even f-in come out yet! or even been previewed or anything.

EA puts out as many games that suck AND blow as they do good games (even though they don't really appeal to me). I know you are talking about others that just say "EA SUCKS", and I agree with you. But I am going to miss the mix of Capcom licenses with Marvels'.

Ok back on topic !!!

Reason why this sounds like a bad idea....

It isnt that EA is doing it.. its that its

MARVEL vs EA HEROES?!?!?!

EA made characters vs Marvel and a line of EA comic books based on these characters?

Um that sounds like CRAP

remember when that StreetFighter 3d game came out and the company that wasnt capcom decided to create new StreetFighter characters... um they all sucked

it was bad

I dont want to play Marvel vs EA created characters.. I would want to play a fighting game with ALL Marvel characters or Marvel vs DC characters..

ewww... JLA vs Avengers Fighting game :)

anyways

that is the problem... its the Marvel vs this EA thing that is the ASS part of the equation

Hey, how did this thread turn into X-Box vs. the world debate anyway???

Right, you want to play Ninja Gaiden yet you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars yet games are what sell consoles. First, its only $179, not several hundreds so stop exagerrating & get a job or quit the whining. Let me mention that Ninja Gaiden isn't the only game worth playing on the Xbox. (upcoming games; Halo 2, Starcraft Ghost, Jade Empire (from Bioware), BC, Fable, Sudeki, Ninja Gaiden, Steel Battalion : Line of Contact, Dead or Alive : Online, Breakdown, Chronicles of Riddick, Enclave 2, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, etc...) but if you want to be ignorant about it, go right ahead. Just because Microsoft made the Xbox does not make the Xbox evil, I was as shocked as anybody when I heard Microsoft was entering the console market. My immediate thoughts, mostly based on assumptions due to the mainstream belief that Microsoft is evil and Bill Gates is the antichrist (imaginations at work), was that the Xbox would be a miserable turd. Quickly did I change my mind when I played the Xbox games and beta tested LIVE($50 for a year for crystal clear voice communication + whatever new characters, levels, and patches the game developers add to their LIVE supported games). From day one of getting LIVE and owning my Xbox I have seen Microsoft go out of its way to please its game consumers, not once have I witnessed any sign that they are 'evil' so "Microsoft is evil because they're a big huge corporation" is an idiotic arguement. I hate to sound like some damn Microsoft rep but Bill and his wife Melinda Gates give a sh!tload of money to charity, how very sneaky and coniving of them.-Maybe part of their plot to overthrow the world? Sure you can repeat what every ignoramus says or you can think for yourself by becoming aware about products and making your own mind up for yourself. I use both a PC and a Mac and while I love the Mac for the beauty of the interface, its ease of use, & the power of the hardware in graphics applications, the PC wins with regards to the fact that their are simply more applications and games for Windows. I can sit here and we could argue for hours but it still won't change the fact that EA making MARVEL games is bad news to me. How about you not put words in my mouth? Here's what I said:
<b> "I don't own an X-Box because I have almost no desire to play any X-Box games."</b>

I never questioned the quality of an X-Box game. I CLEARLY stated that the games do not appeal TO ME.

Wow. All I said was <b>"And as much as I want to play Ninja Gaiden, I don't want to drop a couple of hundred bucks on a new system for one game? Not worth it."</b>

1. I failed to say "not worth it <b>for me</b>". I believe it is my fault for not <i>overstating the obvious</i> in every post I make.

2. Several? Did I say several? Let's look again. Ohhh, I said "couple".

3. Oh yeah, I said "a couple of hundred" As a number, "couple" means two. So really, $179 USD rounds up to a couple of hundred bucks.

4. X-Box costs me about $250 because I'm not american. "a couple of hundred" is amazingly accurate.

3. I don't believe in buying any technology for one use. I even think toasters are stupid. I have a toaster oven. So for me to buy an X-Box for one game is just silly.

Because it's harder to port a game for the PS2. The PS2 proprietary software makes is much more difficult to develop a game for a different console (GC, XB) and then port it to the PS2. It takes more time, more effort, and most importantly, more money to do it the way you want. The XBox "demographic" isn't large enough to warrant it, despite Ubisoft. Oh, by the way, the reason why most companies who "develop" their games for the XBox first do it that way is because they develop it for the PC first (Splinter Cell, as an example) and then PORT it to the XBox, since the XB is just a PC in a Box.

So, money wise, when a large corp wants to develop a game for all three console, you a)develop for the largest demographic (PS2), or b)you develop for the hardest console to develop, since ultimately it'll cost you less money that way, especially if it has the largest demographic.(PS2).

Note I didn't bash the XBox. It's simple numbers. If the XBox sold more, it might be a different tale. It doesn't.
