It's a list based on opinion. Having not read Cerebus, I wouldn't include it on my list either. That doesn't mean Cerebus isn't great, it just means that I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Oh I forgot Madman. I wish Allred would take time from his book of Mormon schedule to make some more Madman comics. He was bringing up so many questions that may never be answered at this rate.

OBVIOUSLY, this is a thread based on opinion. Perhaps I neglected to explicitly note that this is by no means some definitive or absolute list, but that it was one to find out people's particular favorites amongst a veritable sea of great titles.

Why in the world would I add Cerebus to my list, if I have never read it. Also, if I had read it, by what standard or law do I HAVE to add it to my list? This is a list on PERSONAL OPINION, let me stress that.

My personal Top 10, with no Wildstorm/Vertigo eh?

3. Jack Staff (Image)
4. Invincible (Image)

I've gotten a huge chunk of Nexus issues out of cheap bins because I like the art. I've never actually read the book though.
I've also recently picked up issues of Zot, Concrete, Critters, TMNT (Mirage), and Elvira (Claypool) that I have yet to read. A lot of indie books are turning up in the 3-for-a-quarter boxes lately.

nietoperz

Zot is (IMO) one of the best superhero books ever put out. As for Nexus, Mike Baron's dialogue can be an acquired taste, but the premise is genius and Steve Rude's art is just beautiful.

Amen to all those First titles. I'm reading the GrimJack TPBs and can't believe how badly I missed that book. I think I am going to include Hellboy, Mike Allred's indie work, and Usagi Yojimbo in here also, though, along with my current Image favorites. I would have included Grendel, too, but all the stories set in the future bogged it down for me.

Tried to laying off Vertigo, Wildstorm, and anything DC or Marvel owned through a sub division. I tried to be as fair as possible, but it so darn hard. I wanted so much to include a Valient book or Grendal, but ran out of darn room before I could. Nuts :(

It's not that I don't like American comics, it's just that many titles don't get the spotlight they deserve. For me, european and japanese comics will always be better until the Americans get the perception of the medium/art right.

You know, it's funny: looking at Clay's list, you could have easily put older publishers there, but I don't think that's a comment on how young or shortsighted N'rama readers are. I think that's more because when you think "non-Big Two," you think relatively recent indie publishers. American publishers, natch, because otherwise I'd've had to have added Tintin and Asterix, among others, like Nieto did. I also realized I could've added Eclipse's Scout and Airboy (Clay's memory jog made me think of Hillman Publishing), because I love Tim Truman's work in general, but these just weren't so spiffy for me in hindsight outside of the art.

1. Will Eisner's The Spirit
2. Hernandez Bros.' Love & Rockets
3. Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese
4. Richard Corben's Den

#5-#10 in no particular order:
Baron & Reinhold's Badger
Baron & Rude's (and various) Nexus
Paul Pope's THB
Bryan Talbot's the Adventures of Luther Arkwright
Ostrander, Truman, Mandrake, and Henry's (and Pugh's) Grimjack
Daniel Clowes' Eightball

Ooof, Richard Sala's Evil Eye needs to be on there... What can I replace...?
Don Simpson's Megaton Man and Border Worlds should be on there, as well.
And Michael T. Gilbert's Mr. Monster.

I don't think I can limit myself to 10.

It's a good thing this doesn't include comic strips, otherwise O'Donnell and Holdaway's (along with Colvin, Burns and Romero's) Modesty Blaise would NEED to be on there...in the top 5, definitely.

And I didn't include any Japanese books, otherwise there's no way I could come in under 100. Maybe if someone starts a " Top 150 Non-Big 2 Title of ALL TIME" thread. Otherwise, I better not get started.

Holy cow, I realized I forgot Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge.
This is impossible.

I thought you were making a list of the graetest indie titles of all time. If that was the case, despite the fact that you haven't read it, Cerebus being such a giant in the world of indie and even mainstream comics would need to be on that list, and hell, it's probably the best comic ever.

1. Moore and Campbell's From Hell

Way too many honorable mentions. The one current book that I'd put in this company would be Jack Staff.
