Was at the bookstore, and in the sci-fi section (I don't know why I was there), I saw a novel called "It's Superman!" by Tom DeHaven. Apparently it came out last year, but I had never heard of it. It takes place in the 30s and 40s.

Anyone read it? Heard of it? Got good things to say? Bad? Are my pants too tight? t00lverine?

It's supposed to be pretty good.

Chip Kidd did the dust jacket, right?

I've heard good things. I've had it sitting on my shelf since Christmas, but I haven't had much time for books without pictures.

I prefer the hardback's cover:

I've always said that if they were to do an Earth-2 Superman movie, this is the book they should base it on. :) And yeah, the Chris Ware cover for the hardcover is better (that man is a genius at everything he does).

The hardcover is the version I found, thus I assumed it was just new.

Was there no promotion for this book?

It's non-canonn with a version of Superman DC would rather you had forgotten last year (prior to Infinite Crisis.)

Non-cannon is often how I prefer most superheroes.

I enjoyed it. It's a more adult take on Superman's coming-of-age, as well as the backstories of Lois, Luthor, and even a bit of Jonathan Kent. Lex Luthor is a VERY interesting character in this story.

I prefer the hardback's cover::confused: Why did they change the hardback cover when they came out with the paperback? I like the harback version MUCH better.

It's a merchandising/marketing thing. I mean, we're talking about it, aren't we? :)

Whoa, that paperback cover is almost (if not exactly) a direct swipe from one of the Fleisher Superman cartoons! Someone call LitG, we've got one for the "Swipe File" :D

I read this last year. It was good, but the influx of politics was a bit much. Yeah, Lex's political stuff was interesting, but why does Superman have to be classified as one thing or another?

And tying the current President's grandfathers into the story (specifically tying them into Lex's political career) was too clearly politically motivated on the author's part.

Because he WAS pretty much political when he started: anti-big business, anti-corruption, anti-dictator, anti-etc.

It's a valid interpretation of the character.

Actually that cover is by Chris Ware who did Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on the Planet. It does kinda look like it was from the old cartoon.

HOWEVER, the new cover of the paperback version does include art from Max Fliescher's first Superman episode!
