Who are DC's mutants? I can only think of a few actually born with powers:

Jade, Obsidian, and Atom Smasher.

Am I missing anyone else?

The Tornado Twins?

The retconned second Black Canary was born with her sonic scream.

Given the fact that they are born with the same set of powers as on parent, The Tornado Twins, XL and Bart Allan aren't technically exhibiting a mutation in that respect, but could be considered mutants when compared to the rest of humanity.

I'm not sure if Jesse Quick inherited both her mom and her dad's powers, we'll see in the new JSA.

Nuklon/Atom Smasher.

Damage?

The Ray.

Brainwave Jr.

Northwind.

Maxine Baker (Animal Man's daughter)

Again, most of these guys just inherited the same/similar set of powers from a parent.

Was it ever explained how Gypsy and Vibe got their powers?

Aren't they not mutants but rather meta-humans, those with active meta genes?

I just used the marvel definition of someone born with powers..

So basically, most of the sons and daughters of characters mutants in DC? Gotcha.

i need to catch up in my DCness.

No they dont. and yes they do.

I'm pretty sure everyone in the DCU with powers is called a "meta"

I wanted to find out which of the "metas" were "mutants" though..

There have been times when DC has specifically used the term "mutant" like one particular incarnation of the Doom Patrol I think. Tempest and that other guy I think were mutants.

This brings me to Aqualad as well.

And Geo-Force.

unless this got retconned along the way, Geo-Force and his sister Terra were actually given their powers through scientific experientation by Dr. Jace. see BATO 1-2.

I think you may be right. I think DC always did that.

"New Teen Heroes, Take 345..."

"Cue the parental abuse...!"

"Ready the unfortunate devastation..."

"Prepare trenchcoats for first appearance..."

"Has anyone called Batman for his cameo..."

"Hey, who has that speech from any big 7 JLAer about reponsibility?"

'Dammit do I have to do everything?????"

But every meta is born as a meta. It's like being born with genes that destine you to have a widow's peak or connected earl lobes.

heehee, that's almost perfect. the only thing you forgot is:

"link bad stuff in his past to new 'bad-ass' arch-villain, who eventually everyone realizes is a complete dipsh!t"

DC has used some fuzzy definitions for 'meta'. Basically a meta is anyone with powers. Superman counts as a meta, however, had he not come to earth, he would have been average (or not, I can't keep track of how many shakes his origin has been through.) So gaining powers makes you a meta, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have the meta gene.

Generally, people who have potentially active meta genes need something to cause it to be active. In the case of Breach, he survived that nuclear explosion, thus showing he was a meta.

I'll admit, it's kind of like a Salem witch trial (prove you're not a meta by dying), but I think with 52, some of the science of meta genes is coming out with Luthor's people.

Jericho too

Jericho's the only one I can think of who was specifically termed a mutant. Mainly so the Titans could make in-jokes like "A mutant in the Titans?!"

Oh, and Captain Comet.

I don't know how Vibe got his (probably borth with it since his brother also had that power - he was in The Conglomerate), but in the earlier Martian Manhunter series, it was explained that Gypsy was a very distant ancestor of Martian/Human crossbreeding/experimentation.

So, does that count as mutant or inheritance?

Also, Captain Comet is generally referred to as the DCU's first official mutant.
