Got one issue left to read and can completely understand why this is the definitive Green Arrow story. What else has Grell done that I'd like? And the Color Pencil art is somethinng I'd like to see more of.

What else has Grell done that I'd like?He wrote the Green Arrow ongoing series that continued out of Longbow Hunters for many, many issues. You should also check out 'Jon Sable: Freelance', his long running creator owned book that he wrote and drew. It's in a very similar vein to his Green Arrow stuff, and is currently being reprinted in trades, so it's easy to get.

Read the ongoing series. And his Warlord stuff was good.
He also did the art for some of the Green Lantern/Green Arrow stories.

Above post edited for my recommendations.
Grell was a big factor in alot of titles thru out the 70's & 80's. My first exposure to his art was when he did a run on Aquaman with Steve Skeates in Adventure Comics. I found it amazing that he could write/draw great sci fi action in Legion & Green Lantern or fantasy stuff like Warlord or street level stuff in Green Arrow & Jon Sable.
The only work he did that I didn't care for was his run on Iron Man.
I wish DC would collect some of his stuff in trades.

Anyone who enjoyed Longbow Hunters needs to pick up Grell's John Sable Freelance. It shares a very similar tone and themes as Grell's Green Arrow run.

"Longbow Hunters" is amazing. It's just so good.
I have squirreled away almost all of Grell's GA issues at my LCS. They are (I hope still) at present hidden in one of the more obscure boxes, off in a corner. When I have some more money, and have worked out some sort of deal with my LCS guy, I plan on bringing them home and enjoying the heck out of them.
I think Longbow Hunters was Green Arrow's Dark Knight Returns. It was THAT good. I consider it one of the best stories ever.

He adapted the early Jon Sable issues into a novel. A good novel.
Also, there was a short-lived Jon Sable: Freelance t.v. series that featured Rene Russo in a supporting role.

One of the very best comic series of the 1980s, of any genre. In one word...I'd call it masterful. It's that good.
Seriously - if you like the man's writing...Sable is a great experience. The book evolves, and you learn a great deal about the characters as it goes. It spawned a book, a TV series, and at some point Grell's screenplay will hopefully be made into a movie - it has been optioned several times, but never made. The bonus is - IDW is collecting the series in trade, and the first 4 books are already out:

He's writing and drawing new Sable stories now. He just completed a 6-issue mini last year, and is doing another one now. Here's the cover to issue 6 of Jon Sable: Bloodtrail:
