Okay, so I read the just-released trade for this story last night and quite liked it. As much as I loved the d*ckhead Batman of recent years it was great to see a more light-hearted take once again, with Batman and his faithful sidekick Robin getting along so well together instead of Batman being a loner. But I do have a couple of questions.

When Commissioner Gordon shone the Bat Symbol onto the skies of Gotham the news reporter said that it hadn’t been turned on in years. Previously to that, Batman and Gordon made reference to something happening a long time ago to make them stop using it (I think). All this time I assumed that it was still in use, but I guess I was wrong. So, what happened all those years ago to make them not use it anymore? And when was the last time it was used and how long ago was it?

Well, Gordon hadn't been commissioner for a long time. I presume they were referring to No Man's Land or somesuch - one of the nasty events. I dropped Batman for a long time up until recently...

The Gotham Police took it down after War Games when they declared war on the vigilantes after Batman took control of the police force. I think it happened in a Gotham Central issue.

It all happened when Akins was Commisioner.

I enjoyed it. I thought it was one of the better Batman cross-over stories.

Good story, but there's a pretty hardcore refrigeration element to it.

They deal with the signal in Gotham Central. Basically, the GCPD refuses to touch the thing, because they won't offically acknowledge Batman, so they have interns who aren't techinally part of the PD turn it one.

Thanks for the responses. I've heard from this board and others that "War Games" is a really crossover. Is that not accurate?

Not sure what you're asking, but it was a cross-over that went through all the Bat-Titles for 3 months, plus a War Crimes follow-up a few months later. 3 trades for War Games.

There are five trades, actually. The three "War Games" trades themselves, the "War Crimes" epilogue 4-parter, & a prelude trade, "War Drums"

Sorry, I meant that I heard from these boards and others that it's a really bad crossover.:o I was interested in getting it before I heard all the criticism, but I was also put off because there's "War Drums" and "War Crimes" as well and I don't know where it all fits in (though the post above seems to have answered that). Seems like too much to dive into, especially if it's not meant to be that good.

Eh, it's alright. Good idea, flawed execution. And, as said earlier, one very large Refrigerator moment.
