View Full Version : Why do people want duplicate characters in the JLA?

After rerading some of the responses in the JLA roster revealed thread, it seems some people want another GL along with Hal, or a Batman clone like Nightwing, or a WW clone like Donna to be on the team? Why? Let's have some variety, not a bunch of the Batman, Superman, GL, or WW family members. Let's make the JLA instead, Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Superman, Supergirl, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, WW, and Donna Troy.

I agree. There shouldn't be any "duplicates". They should all be unique to the team.

I think people think it's the only way Nightwing will be on the team.

As a reader, I don't really care one way or the other about duplicate powers; I just wouldn't want duplicate personalities.
If you look at it from the perspective of the characters, why wouldn't you want as many Green Lanterns on your team as you could possibly get? In a straight up fist fight, 3 Wonder Women will probably beat 1 Wonder Woman. Let them all join.

Yeah but they're all becoming similar too unforunately.

i felt the same way about that, until i watched two episodes of the JLU: the one where Green Arrow and Speedy fought together, and the one where Despero's forces wiped out a bunch of Green Lanterns.
then i realized that it's pretty cool to have the same powers/abilities. it's what the characters do that counts.
good writing makes everything swell.:) (i'm mellow today!)

It's bad enough with Batman AND Vixen on the same team...

Batman AND Vixen?? Where did THAT come from?
You make it sound as if they both have the same skills/powers, not to mention personalities (and sex).
Do try and check more about what either of them (or any other member/character) can do before you just throwing out names.

They've both slept with Dale Gunn.

Having Nightwing or Donna Tory on the team is fine, so long as Batman and Wonder Woman isn't on the team as well. For me, it's not about having people with the same powers or similar names. It's about Nightwing being in Batman's shadow or Donna in WW's shadow. The only way I can see them on the same team is if you hane a team like the animated JLU, where virutally every superhero is on the roster.

its because of the common characters in JLA that I'm looking forward to the JSA revamp more than the JLA lineup. New and different personas. I'd probably be more onboard if Batman weren't in another of DC's books and maybe Nightwing instead, John Stewart instead of Hal Jordan etc.,
Mix it up DC - PEE INTO THE WIND!

Ultimately when building a team everyone has gimme characters that they allow in simply because they like the characters and want to see them in more (or a) books. I love the original Titans characters and believe they can be the equal of there mentors so I'll allow more of them on. I want them to be interacting with counter-parts so I can show that their equal (or Better)
Basicly it is mandated that Bats, Supes and Wonder woman must be the core of the DCU and hence the core of the JLA. I believe that if the JLA is written right and characters aren't shackled by the assumption that they can never be as big in a few years you will be able to write a JLA with Nightwing instead of Batman.
I was recently reading Dan Didio talking about Booster Gold and how the character had to be "brought back" to the core idea that made him different from other heroes. To me the Idea that characters are locked into being what they started as is insane, that characters have to be unique or different. Some of the best character moments come from comparing too very similar characters. And some times what makes a character special has nothing to do with how he started or how he's different from others... sometimes it's enough that their your characters and you know their story. Give me a Ted Kord with a weak heart still trying to be a hero because that's who he is he's not batman or spider-man or even a mix of the two. He's Blue Beetle and he deserves more respect then to be dismissed as cannon fodder.

Did you have a problem with Superman and Martian Manhunter being on the same team? Because their powers are virtually identical.

But the way they (the characters) work aren't....Superman is more into 'hit now and the person stays up, then hit some more', MM is more of a 'mind player'

Still the same powers, and that's just the way they've previously been written, a new approach could change all that.

Well...MM's not on the team anymore, so we won't be having that 'new approach' just yet. Maybe when they catch Arse...Red Arrow 'shooting-up' again...but not yet. :D

Since when can Superman turn invisible, turn intangible, shape shift, and use telepathy, like a green Martain? J'onn and Superman are nothoing alike. Now WW and Superman, that's another story.

Sort of like when you put together a military.
Great to have a tank but better to have six tanks.
Even so you don't go with all tanks and no infantry.
Infantry has its place. As do planes, submarines artilery.
The trick then is to assemble a task force with the proper tools for the mission.
Never send Aquaman to the desert if you have anyone else available.
Heroes like Superman and Martian Manhunter are like Swiss Army Knives -
so many different powers they can do almost anything.
But if you don't need strength and invulnerabilty, only speed - then send a Flash and keep Superman in reserve for the things only he can do.
- - - --
But that's being practical.
And I don't read comics for "practical" - I read them for the action, adventure and because there are interesting personalities.
Thus a JLA really never needs goofballs like Plasticman or Snapper Carr.
And if Batman and Guy Gardner are going to act like jerks I much rather have Nightwing and John Stewart.
But if you got the powers then being nice to look at is a plus. Much rather have Black Canary and Powergirl than Batman and Superman as they can do pretty much the same things and look a whole lot better doing it.

AMEN. And I'd rather put: Steel instead of Black Lighting; and Huntress instead of Black Canary.

I'd rather the JLA be made up of some of the newer generation rather than the old guard. Screw Hal and Ollie, bring on Conner and John, I am hopeful that Meltzer will be able to deliver instead of falling into the standard Big seven trap that made JLA unreadable before it got canceled.
The more varied the members are from the classic JLA archtype the better off it maybe.
