View Full Version : Would you read a Jerry Seinfeld-written Superman? (POLL)

I remember someone once asked Wizard if DC was trying to get Seinfeld (a huge Superman fan) to write Superman, back when Superman stank something fierce. DC's reply was that the money he would make writing the book paled in comparison to what he got just by having his show on syndication, but that they would gladly put him on a book if he expressed interest.
So if he did express interest and DC put him on the book, would you buy it?

I'd be interested in checking it out if he did one. He's suppose to be a huge Superman fan and that's a plus right there if he were given the chance to write one. He's heart might be in the write place, could he deliver a good story would be something else though.

Strictly speaking, Jerry Seinfeld's irony-heavy comedic sense is almost the opposite of what Superman is about. But if he ever did write some Superman, I'd still be interested in reading it.

I think it'd be funny if he wrote the main cast as
Jerry -> Superman/Clark
Elaine -> Lois

Kramer-> Perry
And later explain it away as something Mr. Myxwhatever did. I think that would be hilarious :p

I picked Hell yeah! but only because my actual choice wasn't an option.
I would be interested in a Seinfeld penned Superman comic for the sheer novelty of it, and would buy it if it was any good. So yes I would peek at it, but I'm not buying any Superman comics at the moment, so it would have to be pretty darn good.

Maybe not a whole series, but definitely a few issues of "All-Star" just to see what he does with it. I'm sure he'd answer the "does Superman have a super sense of humor?" question.:)

I heard it sucked, but I don't know exactly how much John Cleese had to do with it in the end... And apparently Byrne drew the thing at a five-or-six-pages-a-day rate, which can't be very good for the quality.

have never even met 3 people who don't like Seinfeld...
I can name more then a few: me, my mum and dad, my sister, cousins x4, aunts x2, pretty much all of my closest friends which adds another handfull of people. I actually can only think of 3 people I know who actually like the show - one of my uncles my cousin who is pretty much a brother to me and my mum fiance'. And before you say all the other people I mentioned have no sense of humour, I beg to differ its quite a diverse group and not one likes the show. That's why it annoys me when people say it was the greatest comedy period - it is anything but.
So no I don't want Seinfeld writing Superman comics, the only thing that would be as bad would be Bendis writing Batman.

The last episode depresses me for some odd reason. I wanted them to have a happy ending.
That ending was classic, because they didn't go the "happily-ever-after" route. Look at the sitcoms that have the most-liked finales, they all either carry on as usual or do something crazy in lieu of happy endings:
-Newhart (Suzanne Plechette/it was all a dream! one of the best, imo)
-Cheers (life goes on as it always does)
-Frasier (moves away from Seattle to start another new life)
On the other hand, look at the shows that have the wrap-it-up happy endings, which in retrospect look really lame:
-Friends (oy, vey, that one...)
-Mad About You
I'll add more as I think about it.

I'd be intereested in it. If it was a $3 comic, yeah, I'd be willing to risk that. If it came out as a prestiege format or anything more $, then I'd probably wait to see previews or get reviews before committing (see previous posts about John Cleese). Seinfeld would certianly get Superman some publicicity if this were to ever happen, that's for sure.
Not to derail this thread too far, but didn't John Cleese write a Superman story with John Byrne? Did that ever come out? Can anyone tell me what it was like?
Did anyone ever read any DC books by Patton Oswald. He's another comedian/comic fan. I seem to recall he did some issues of JLA Classified or a JLA mini (can't remember what exactly, but it was JLA related). I'm wondering how they turned out.

Ya Australian TV isnt know for much either. Ive never heard of anything big coming from Australian TV. Every once in a while some overseas show might get some US notoriety but most of the time it's the US stuff the world wants to get their hands around. Coke, Pepsi, McDonalds, Baseball, TV and Movies... US pop culture and it's influence is felt all over the world, i can't say the same in reverse though.
I like Grey Goose Vodka maybe theres one example, nothing compares to the worldwide influence the US marketing and advertisers have on the world.
Australia does have the Funnel Web spider and the worlds only poisonous mammal. Australia is cool for animals not TV. So if you don't like Seinfeld down under I don't put much regard into that statement.

Nice bit of generalisation there smooth work.
As one of "You people" I am a huge fan of Seinfeld and by proxy Curb Your Enthusiasm. I also happen to enjoy many British TV shows such as Red Dwarf, Black Books, Spaced, Blackadder and The League of Gentleman.

Im not jealous that I cant watch Blackadder.
What do you mean generalization, you make some stupid comment like that and it confuses the hell outta me. Noone says "MUM" in the states, thats a word for Mother that has obviously been influenced by European influence. There's nothing wrong with saying "MUM" but when an individual hears that they know it isn't an American saying. Doesn't take a clutural anthropologist to figure that one out.
It's like saying do you want 1 or 2 lumps in your coffee. Noone here says that so it isnt a generalization its the truth. Or spot of tea. Get over yourself buddy.

He should do as story totally deticated to Clark. You know how Supes has to always play this character in front of people and what he really thinks about the way they treat him. Or have Clark go to New York for an assignment and how he view New Yorkers and their busy life and an encounter with Nightwing...

I would check out anything Jerry Seinfeld did, since he does so little now. Seinfeld is the greatest traditional sitcom of all time, period. No other comes close. After having seen Curb Your Enthusiasm, I prefer that, but I don't consider it a sitcom. Those two shows and the cancelled Arrested Development are the only comedy TV shows I find funny at all. Every other show is just mindless pop dreck using the same predictable jokes.
But, it would have to have humor as its main intent. I don't really want Seinfeld trying to write a serious story, and I don't think he would want to either, for the same reasons his show worked so well - the mantra "No learning, no hugging."

Natural1, your entire argument you realise is based on generilisation, America doesn't have the best comedy neccesarily, nor is Seinfeld the greatest comedy - that's too general a statement. Much like Crocodile Dundee - which is if you knew anything about the outside world which you clearly don't does not represent Australia as a whole. It is one of the most urbanised socieites on the planet, most Australians have never been to the outback, Crocidile Dundee is not representative of Australia as a whole, sadly it was shown to mainstream America which knows very little about Australia.

Listen man i'm not saying you can't have an opinion, but don't dispute the fact that the US puts out some of the best comedy in the world. Why are our moives so popular overseas? The proof is all around you. We have legendary comedians in both standup and film. Saying Seinfeld is one of the best comedies of all time is not a "definitive statement," as you put it. I could say All in the Family or Married with Children are the greatest comedies of all time as well. I don't need to view every comedy ever made to know these shows are some of the best ever. Anything by them, I would buy. Hell, it could be Witchblade. Larry David makes me laugh the most out of anyone on the planet. Heh, "You know, those are SOME breasts." :D

Everyone knows Seinfeld is a Superman fan but does anyone know about David? Has he ever expressed an interest in comics? Cos that would be pretty pretty good...

as much as I have an appreciation for Jerry Seinfeld liking Superman I would say no, I wouldnt get it. I have a hard time with alot of the hollywood writers doing comic books and generally dont get them except certain ones (heinberg being the most obvious)

I said the same thing about 4 posts ago. It's pure craziness too say you don't like Seinfeld. Like ajk1988 said it's probaly the greatest show ever. It's almost like saying "don't like pizza or icecream. People aren't supposed to make statements like that.
Remember people "The Hamptons" best episode ever.. better know as the shrinkage episode but they're is so much funnier crap going on in the episode besides that.
That's probably my favourite episode too. Such a classic. :)
I do know someone who really doesn't like Seinfeld at all and that's mostly because of George. She's not a Danny DeVito fan either I found out when I told her I liked Batman Returns just a tiny, tiny bit better than the first movie. I don't know, maybe she's got something against short, balding men.
Anyways I voted 'Hell Yeah!' since I would most likely buy it. I remember seeing those Jerry Seinfeld/ Superman commercials and even if it was somewhat like that I would be interested. I don't care if he did an in continuity or out of continuity story really but I would hope they would give him a lot of freedom and let his ideas go wild. I suppose most likely it would be a one-shot type deal.

Prettay...prettay...prettay good!
But seriously don't think Larry David is a fan of anything. Especially not any people, Sophia Loren notwithstanding. :D
I can imagine David writing Superman going to the golf course and being out-golfed or something like that.

A Seinfeld Superman would be goofy, but probably in a cool way....maybe an Elseworlds book....;)
