Ready for a “sexy superhero comedy”?
Adam Warren-style?
Announced at this week’s Comic-Con International: San Diego, Adam Warren returns to Dark Horse with an all-new original graphic novel, Empowered, or EMP.
Warren is no stranger to Dark Horse, having produced several Dirty Pair limited series and trade paperbacks as well as Bubblegum Crisis and covers for the Star Wars manga adaptations.
For anyone who’s read his latest Marvel project, Livewires or the Gen13 issues that he did for WildStorm a while back, you know you’re in for something totally different with EMP.
“Who says superheroes need self-esteem? Not only is costumed crime fighter Empowered saddled with a less-than-ideal superhero name, but she’s forced to wear a skintight and cruelly revealing “supersuit” that wreaks havoc on her body-image insecurities,” Warren explained to Newsarama. “Worse yet, the suit’s unreliable powers are prone to failure, repeatedly leaving her in appallingly distressing situations... and giving her a shameful reputation as the lamest “cape” in the masks-and-tights game. Nonetheless, she pluckily braves the ordeals of her bottom-rung superheroic life with the help of her “thugalicious” Bad Boy of a lover and her hard-drinking, female-ninja best friend, not to mention the supervillainous advice from the imprisoned alien demonlord watching DVDs from atop her coffee table. . .

This goes right to the top of my "to buy" list.
And if this is what his "layouts" look like, I'd love to see his full pencils.

So... this will be released in a tiny manga-sized trade to try and attract the manga fans (believe me, they don't fall for this), and it won't even be inked?
Thanks but no thanks. Keep your cheapo stuff, Warren.

6 X 9 is not tiny, nor is it manga-sized (5 X 7). It's only slightly smaller than standard comic book size (7 X 10 ).*
*All sizes approximate

I'm not usually the type to get excited by a preview of a comic, but for this, I make an exception.
I can't wait for this to come out!

Hey! I own Livewires, apparently! That was a good story, one that didn't end how I expected it to...very nice art.

I thought that Adam Warren had fallen off of the face of the planet. It's good to hear that he's going to be coming out with some new work. His work on Dirty Pair and Gen-13 was positively addictive; great art combined with great hilarity.
I'll be looking for this one.

I think I need to get this one. Self-esteem is still a relatively unexplored theme among superheroes. Probably because it lends itself easily to female "capes," and we all know how few there are of those.
Not trying to sound sexist or anything. It's just that whenever a male character exhibits low self-esteem or is at all hesitant, he's labeled as a wuss, (Hamlet comes to mind), but such themes tend to be more "acceptable" for female characters. It's weird.
Anyway, looking forward to it.

I read "Adam Warren" + "Dark Horse" and were sold. Oi!
Hopefully this will be as good as his "Teen Titans" One-Shot or "Livewires" (didn't like his run on Gen13 but "Magical Drama Queen Roxy").

Thanks but no thanks. Keep your cheapo stuff, Warren.'s funny, I'd be willing to bet plenty of people who will be picking this up will be long-time Warren fans, the majority of whom are most likely manga fans in general.
And cheapo stuff? Don't ever move to Japan, then. This is how plenty of manga gets sold over there and, wonder of wonders, they do just fine. I'm fairly sure this will do fine over here also.
'sides, few do post-modern parody with as much irreverence as Warren does, so I've no doubt it'll be worth it.

You're right, but don't forget that Warren added some 'Starlin cosmic effect' for good measure! That makes all the difference... ;) :D

Great artist, criminally under-rated writer.
A funny, beautifully drawn comic?

WHATEVER THE COVER PRICE I WILL BUY IT! You rock Warren and glad you are doing original stuff again - I loved your Titans book for being more original than Titans-inspired...you've come A LONG way from your first Dirty Pair comic...I am 100% behind you on this new book because it sounds fun and I think you're wrong - someone needs to bridge the manga/US gap and you are the man to do it!
Automatic buy for me. It looks hilarious and gorgeous. I don't usually like Warren's art but I think that his pencils are gorgeous (leading me to believe its the inking and coloring process i don't like).

Ditto!
If only it were out soooner...

Though I'd love to be on the email list :D

"To hell with you, inks." :D
I've been a fan of Warren's art for a while, but I've just recently fallen in serious like with his attitude, as caustic as it is. "Continuity porn", indeed!

This thread gets a 'bump' because the graphic novel comes out in just 7 more days...
There's also a 14 page preview available on Dark Horse Comic's site here (http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/profile.php?sku=14-043&qt=wizard).
And in case you couldn't tell, yes, I'm still looking forward to purchasing this. :D

Yeah, if you're like me and had looked for an AW website over the years, there's finally an online stash of his art, with heaps of notes on unpublished projects and many many goodies!
