According to news reports and Glass House Graphics chief David Campiti, new Hulk colorist Hermes Tadeu was murdered in Praia Grande, Sao Paulo, Brazil on December 21st. He was just completing his first issue of the series, #70. Tadeu was 25.
According to accounts of the event, Tadeu was completing the final touches on the last page of Hulk #70, when he decided to take a break and go for a walk on the beach with his girlfriend. While walking, a man accosted Tadeu and tried to steal his camera. Tadeu resisted, and was shot in the chest. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Sao Paulo police later arrested 18 year old Rodrigo Dos Santos Moreira in connection with the crime.
Campiti told Newsarama:
”Hermes Tadeu, an amazing talent at 25, an artist, a painter, and colorist for Mike Deodato's Hulk series at Marvel, was murdered by a complete stranger only days before Christmas. Hermes had toiled for commercial clients, music magazines, and smaller comics publishers for years, creating stunning painted spot illustrations and crafting amazing computer color. He'd been looking for his big break, and some weeks ago he got it -- the monthly assignment to color HULK for Marvel, over Mike Deodato. He was Deodato's personal choice for best comics colorist in the world, and the results showed on the pile of Hulk, Venom, Wolverine/Punisher, and other Deodato covers he'd colored.
”We at Glass House Graphics are awaiting more information on everything surrounding this horrible event.
”Not long ago, Hermes sent to us several hand-painted illustrations of female comics characters for us to sell on his behalf on eBay; we will be prceeding with this in January 2004, to help raise money to benefit his family. We have also established the Hermes Tadeu Fund to assist his family; contributions may be sent via PayPal to HermesTadeuFund@aol.com. Cards may be sent to his family in care of Glass House Graphics, 109 N. 18th Street, Wheeling, WV 26003.
”I only met Hermes Tadeu once, last year in Sao Paulo, Brazil -- and found him to be clever, talented, and personable. Nearly every day we chatted online about coloring, art styles, opportunities, and moving onward and upward.
”Hermes Tadeu has moved onward and upward to God now in this Christmas season, but those of us still here on planet Earth can only mourn about this senseless tragedy. Hermes, we all will miss you.”

Horrible...
Brings tears to the eyes...
Being to Sao Paulo (a huge and beautiful city), and having family there, the criminal underbelly is something to be feared even the cops are afraid to enter the slums in that city...
My condolences to his family..:(

Hi, I´m new here, and I´m also Brazilian. I would just like to correct, Hermes wasn´t killed in the CITY of São Paulo, but in the STATE of São Paulo. This tragic fact actually happened in Praia Grande, one of the cities in the coast of the state (which is very near to my own city, Santos).
My condolences go to his family and friends. It´s sad enough when we lose a comic artist to old age or to some disease, but when someone in his twenties has his life and career interrupted by violence, we became very ashamed of our world...
Two news sites which confirm the actual place of the murder, unfortunatelly only in Portuguese:
http://atribunadigital.globo.com/noticia.asp?cod=154502&cad=96
(the local newspaper online page - you can notice that they don´t even refer to him as a comic artist, but that´s because he wasn´t really that famous here in Brazil outside our comics ghetto)
and

This year has been so full of losses. Personal, professional, and beyond. It's so heartbreaking to hear something like this happening. I send my prayers to his suvivors, and hope that each day they find a little more strength to carry on.
Having lost more than their fair share of loved ones this year, I know how hard it's going to be. I know I'll be sending in what little I can, I hope that a wave of kindness that often comes of tragic events showers the poor people and makes them realize that there are good people in this world. They're going to need all the reassurance they can get.
My condolances to his family. I hope whoever committed this crime is brought to justice and faces the maximum punishment allowed.
May the coming year bring us more happiness than pain.
damm..... my toughts are with his family...... this is to horrible.:(

Marvel should do the same thing they did with Mark G back in '96. Have a line at the end. Also the last page should be in B&W - at the stage where he'd inked it.

The world is a sad and scary place at times. And these times in particular seem so full of war, murder and violence. Who knows what kind of artistic feets this young painter would've accomplished... My warmest thoughts to his friends and family and a promise to myself to work harder at my own artistic endeavors every day.

This is very, VERY sad news. I never really pay attention to the names involved with making a comic book. Once in a while I'll notice them on the title page but it's not like I stop to memorize what they are. If a book looks good, I get it... and the colors on Incredible Hulk were way beyond that. They were amazing, astonishing in ever sense of the word.
The most recent covers along are enough to make you go... "Wow." My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Tadeu's family, as well as his friends. He was... truly exceptional. May he rest in peace. and his killer receive just punishment for the terrible crime he committed.

Amen, Doom... and you just gave me an idea. There should be a memorial arc in the pages of Incredible Hulk, with a character named after Hermes who gets killed in very much the same way but the killer is on the run. Then the Hulk would be forced to team up with a few other Marvel characters (Wolverine, Punisher, and Venom) in order to track the culprit down. That would be fitting, not to mention interesting.

Some fucking ignorant guy felt the urge to take the life of a talented nice man that wanted to enjoy spending time with his girlfriend. And for what? Because he wanted to steal a fucking camera! Nice society we live these day, isn't it?
Thank's so much ass hole.
I hope he fucking rots.

Rest In Peace Hermes Tadeu.

I think it would be more fitting for Marvel to post a bio on Hermes and set up a fund to help his family pay for the expenses of his funeral in the backs of their books where the letters column would usually go.
I just don't care to have such a tragic event being used for storyline purposes, especially so soon after it. Just wouldn't be considerate for the family and friends left behind.
My thoughts go out to those who were closest to him. So sad to have such potential wasted senselessly. :(

My condoleances to all that were left behind.
To amaraswen: It's very tasteless to post such a picture as it is obvious the deceased was a hated man by the ones looking down on the grave. If you have no words, at least have the respect to find an appropriate gesture. I hope a mod edits it out.

You're right, the picture likely doesn't reflect what amaraswen was trying to show, so he should probably take it out. Still, I don't think he meant it in any harmful way and wasn't trying to be tasteless regarding the tragedy.

I suspected sooner or later someone was gonna react this way. It's true, I have no words before a senseless act like this, so I thought an image was worth a thousand words. And since we're in a comics board, what better than a picture from a comic?
I thought and still think is an elegant and beatiful drawing, and the ones looking down the grave are painfully sad and not expressing hate. The gesture of the girl throwing a rose is very meaningfully touching, IMHO.
But it's up to the moderators to decide.
It is tough when anyone's life is ended, for life is never enough. But when it is taken so suddenly from an out-standing young talent, it becomes a bitter pill to swallow.
To the family and friends of Mr. Tadeau;
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I dont want to start a discussion on this, but when I first saw the picture I had no problem with it and thought it conjured the appropriate emotion. We are all different and express ourselves differently. No matter what the context it was played out in the game, it was taken away from that and put into something else. A somber good-bye. For now. What's to stop Marvel from setting up such a fund, then have the Hulk rip apart the bastard in the same issue? Having been robbed at gunpoint before, I still wish that I was the Hulk so I could rip those two ghetto thugs into their individual parts as painfully as possible.
Like it or not, sometimes the "peaceful" and "mature" way to vent your spleen in matters such as these just simply doesn't do the job. There are times you have exact eye-for-an-eye, even if it's in effigy...
