(This is my first review so be kind)
Powergirl
Collects showcase 97-99, secret origins 11, jsa 32+39 and JSA classified 1-4
A very interesting book this which nominally collects Powergirls new origin story from last year. The stories is quite enjoyable and like the "Return of Donna Troy" serves well in cleaning up the godawful mess that the characters continuity had become. However Amanda Conner's art felt abit to cartoony to me for such a serious story.
The story also collects the classic Showcase issues that gave Kara's original origin. It's still a great read after thirty years and while the art seems dated in this fully painted and computer colored world it still looks really good. Also included is the somewhat less enjoyable 80's origin story, I say less enjoyable but in fact it would be a good read were it not for the fact we now know it to all be a lie. Finally the collection also includes a few text pages on her history and a few pages each from a couple of JSA issues. Of these 32 is more relevent seeing as it's the first major questionmark over Karen's "origin", I have to wonder about 39 which while a fun scene seems to lack a place in the book (plus it from one of the most godawful issues of JSA ever). Still it does remind us of one of Karen's few constants (alongside her er assets) as she gives Kendra and Courtney some advice about being a woman in a mans world.
All in all a superb trade with very little to let it down which gives a whirwind tour of the characters history and then gives us the story that finally restored the character to her roots. Not a bad use of my £9.99 over all.
(You know I was going to get Rann-Thanagar war instead but then I found a copy in the local library . Glad I did because no way is that worth spending 9 quid on)
Enjoy it folks:
