Its fans wailed and gnashed their teeth the announcement that DC’s Manhunter was ending with August’s issue #25.

For a little over a two years, writer Marc Andreyko had been chronicling the life of a new hero – Kate Spencer, who, for her own reasons and motivations, took on the mantle of Manhunter in the DC Universe. The series was a cult favorite, its audience small, but wildly devoted to the new heroine as she made her way in a world filled with costumed heroes, villains, madmen and monsters. During her run, the Manhunter legacy was explored, Kate made mistakes along her path, other heroes were met, and a network of supporting characters was fleshed out. The book won acclaim from virtually all corners, from fans to critics, pros to other publishers.

But in the end, it wasn’t enough. Live by the numbers, die by the numbers.

Sometimes though, wailing and gnashing of teeth are heard by the right people, and those right people do take action.

In terms of “right people” thing DC Executive Editor Dan Didio, and in terms of “action” think five more issues of Manhunter by the same creative team, helmed by Marc Andreyko.

I have to admit, I tried Manhunter a few different times and it never captured me. However, it's AWESOME that DC's giving the book another chance. That's a real treat for the book's fans.

I only just jumped on OYL, and was a bit annoyed at it being cancelled, so this is ace news.

"And, hey, if people with names like Whedon, Millar, Rucka, Brubaker, Bendis, Oeming, Simone, Hester, Meltzer, Casey are fans of Manhunter, shouldn't you listen to 'em?"

So Didio didn't really listen to the FANS.....if it wasn't for people on the INSIDE putting in their two cents, this series would be in the round-file.

It's a great series and I'm happy to see a stay of execution. Not so impressed at how little the fan base means to DCs Powers That Be.

Get everyone you know to read this book. Buy the issues for them. It is one the best new titles from the past two years. Honestly check it out. I was so pissed when it was cancelled. I am so glad they see the potential and are giving it a chance. I did hear they had plans for Kate/Manhunter after her series, but I guess those have been modified if she is going to be around a few more months.

Come one dude. He said that there was an overwhelming fan response like three times. He said that to get more people to read the book. You're nitpicking to an extreme degree.

I'm glad that Manhunter is getting a short revival at least. I'll probably pick it up too, being that it will be slightly important to the DCU.

While the current arc appears to be ending with #25, and the new arc starting with #26, I'll give Manhunter another go with #26 in September(?). Although in the past the attempts I've made to get into this book haven't hooked me. I can't ignore the constant praise this series is getting. One more time, I suppose.

Also, congratulations to Marc and the fans who've fought for this book.

First let me say that I am a HUGE fan of the series. I have read it since #1 and have loved it. On the other hand, it's been a tough sale for customers. There are several reasons.

1. Low production value. The book is still printed on crappy paper and the colors are crap.

2. ZERO support, we are at over 20 issues and there is only one TPB. How do I get people into the book? Let's say they get the first TPB and then what? I can't stock another 15-20 issues and not have holes.

3. ZERO prominence for the character. She's not appearing anywhere else and DC just does not care, she's in her own corner.

4. The Green Lantern "Manhunters" sure dont help confusing the issue. They are cool in their own way but they dont help the popularity of the character as a "brand".

IF DC really wants to save the book, and not just have a 5 issue "cool" jump off point for something else they want to tell, and then cancel it again, they would promote the books better. TPBs are important, but since they already have their 'SET IN STONE" list of TPBs coming out in the next half-year, there is almost no chance of it happening.

Remember H.E.R.O? Remember Fallen Angel? Remember HARD TIMES? This has happened SO many times it's not even funny. DC does not care about these books, it's the "throw at the wall and see if it sticks" strategy. Unfortunately without support it will NEVER stick...

Andreyko said that, not DiDio, as a sales pitch to convince non-Manuhunter readers to try it. The article was very clear that DC changed their minds because of the fans. Another example of a comic fan complaining just to complain.

As for the actual news...Woot!

But since Manhunter has turned into a come-back kid, let's have a team-up with the other come-back kid. Manhunter vs. Spider-Girl!!!

After reading what has seemed toi so far been very mediocre conference news this has just blown me away.

By far my favourite book at the moment. Written by and amazingly talented and nice guy.

I orginally picked up issues 1-4 and dropped it to to cash flow and worries it would be axed before it found its stride.

After hearing such good things about it I jumped back on board with #15 hoping the missing issues will be reprinted in trade. Mark was good enough (and I live in the UK so it was at a fair cost to himself) to send me the #5 i was missing to make up the orginal arc. I dont have to tell you what a hellishly cool and commited guy he is to do that. He beleives in this book and his work and rightfully so this book is one of the nest on the market these days. I beleive that passion is copntagious and If all writers were this passionate about their work then the bar for quality of books would be set much higher.

I picked up the book for my cousin who is hellishly slow at reading all the trades ive bought him but seems to be quite looking forward to read it due to me raving about it constantly.

Im going to do something here that I hope others will follow up on. Im going to ask that two issues of the first issue of this 5 issue arc be put in the folders of two people who dont read this book normally by my comic shop charged to me.

Hey and im not all that loaded. Theres gotta be some rich fans of this book out there that can beat that.....

DC would never do something so shameless. It's clear what saved this book. DC stole Marvel's Spider-Girl gimmick to get get some good (free) press. Nothing wrong with that. ;)

Now bring back Hero and Bloodhound.

I liked Bloodhound, too, but I've liked Manhunter even more -- particularly for all of the reasons that Dan DiDio mentioned above. As I've been re-evaluating my regular shopping list (i.e., dropping titles), this was one title that would definitely stay.

Thanks, DC! Marc's a good writer -- you guys need to keep him around, preferably on Manhunter, but, if not, give him a book that will well utilize his talents. He absolutely lays down some of the best dialogue, his character sense is damn near top drawer, and constructs some great scenes and sequences.

And why am I writing this here?

I think I'll send Mr. D. a thank you letter, and include these thoughts there.

This is such terrific news!!! And our letter writing campaign actually worked!!!

What would be a really great push for the series is to have a Manhunter-related plot appear in 52 to coincide with the new 5 part story arc in September. Not sure how far in advance the 52 team is working, but surely if Marc hasn't started writing this new arc yet, they haven't got to their September weekly issues.

While I agree a second trade would really help to amp up interest in the book, I do think the first trade is a good enough hook to make someone pick up the series. And for those wondering, the OYL plotline is an ideal place to start. So, it's really only three back issues you'd need to hunt for at this point, and the completists can work their way thru back issue sales later on (I'm one of those, and am currently now just missing issues #6-#8.)

Okay, yeah, Manhunter is in the middle of an arc that started with #20.

-What's been going on since then is that Kate Spencer (Manhunter) has become the Defense Attorney for Dr. Psycho.

-There has been a rash of murders, all of the victims young, attractive, women. The killer was revealed in #22.

-Kate's son has recently shown metahuman abilities

-Mark Shaw (a former Manhunter) was kidnapped by a mysterious cult.

-Kate is trying to find out if she truly is the granddaughter of the Golden Age Atom. She enlisted the help of the JSA's Dr. Mid-Nite to find out the truth. He then found out that Kate had two DNA matches within the JSA.

Okay, you're all caught up. Now buy the book! :D :D :D

Not to overstate the obvious, but the most important function of the fan base is to buy the product. I don't see the logic in keeping a magazine going just because a small fan base is very vocal about it.

I was very upset when I read that Manhunter was cancelled.

Thank you so much Mr. Didio. Keep this title going forever.

Buy a copy for your friends. Give it to everyone you know. Let's mobilize and keep it afloat now that we have a second chance at this.

Manhunter is back for 5 more issues?

This is beyond awesome! MANHUNTER is my favorite book right now and I was incredibly upset at its untimely 'passing.' Even if we only get 5 more issues, the fact that DC is giving it another shot is unprecedented for them and for that I applaud them.

I'm damn curious to see what this new arc is going to be, but in the meantime, let's see DC put out another trade, an action figure, and a bunch of guest appearances by Kate around the DCU to help promote her own book! :D

I've never read Manhunter, but I've heard the good praises, so I'm going to pick it up starting with this five issue arc to help the sales, and if it really grabs me, I'll stick around.

I'm pleased to hear this. I'd just picked up the first trade paperback and enjoyed it (with some subject matter-related reservations.) Naturally, I immediately learned that the book was cancelled.

If DC wants to support this book, they need to put out a second TPB. And a third. I don't pick up new books midstream. I pick 'em up at the beginning (issues or trades) or not at all.

Well-written, lovely art. The gore and death in the first TPB, though, bothered me. I hope other parts of the series tone it down.

While a 25-issue run is respectable in this day and age, I'm happy to learn that we're getting 5 more issues (and hopefully more).

I know some people were soured by the fact that this is yet another Manhunter -- when DC has had some perfectly fine Manhunter characters before. However, try reading the book just for the storytelling and especially the characterization.

The book has always been good, but I'll admit that some of the issues before One-Year-Later, weren't up the to the standards of the first year of this series. However OYL has definitely energized the book. The past couple of issues are highly recommended.

This is great news. I've been following Manhunter for the last year since it had such good buzz around it and it's nice to know it's going to be around for a little while longer at least. Hopefully another trade will come out some time too -- I haven't been able to find issues 7 through 11 anywhere.

Have a good day.

1. Low production value. The book is still printed on crappy paper and the colors are crap.

I'd like to disagree...the colors may be dark, but I believe it fits the tone of the book.

Also, am I the only person who likes the old-school paper? I'm tired of all this glossy crap in every book out there. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I enjoy the thinner, newsprint-style paper at least in a few of my books.

That being said, I am soooo excited for this book getting a second chance. It has already been repeated several times, but if you're not reading this, you should be. I have enjoyed this series from the beginning, and I hope to enjoy it for quite awhile longer.

Congrats to Andreyko et all!!

This is fabulous news, indeed. It's great to hear that fans and pros alike campaigned to save the book. Ironically, the week the book was cancelled, Brian K. Vaughan had just listed Manhunter as one of his top five picks of the week.

On a personal note, there was a time (around issue 10, I believe) when I didn't read Manhunter. In the reply section of an article on the series, right here on the 'Rama, I asked for fans of the book to let me in on why I should check it out. To my amazement, Andreyko himself offered me a deal I could not refuse. For my enlightenment, he sent me five issues in return for my postal address, not asking a dime in return. Obviously, my "preview" did the trick, and I am in love with Kate Spencer. It's great to have someone in the industry who believes in their work to this degree.

Marc Andreyko, you are a fantastic writer and one Hell of a nice guy. Congrats on the second chance!

Thanks

Remember H.E.R.O? Remember Fallen Angel? Remember HARD TIMES?

I remember all of those! I allowed folks in the store I helped out at to read back issues when they were on hand so as to push the various series. That's also how I pushed Spider-Girl!

I am just happy that Manhunter is being given these 5 issues to try and gain more support.

Guess I will also do the same thing I have done with Spider-Girl, and others, I will buy two issues from my next order on, and make it my "lend" title for the future.

Lend title - A title I but extra copies of and the lend around to other comic readers to help gain interest.

I just skip a few cokes, or something each month.

I second this praise for Marc. I always appreciate creators that interact with the fans to begin with...but Marc takes it to the Nth degree and should be commended for it...heck...he should have a bronze statue outside of Newsarama HQ (even if it would be a bitch for Matt to mow the lawn around it). :)

I've picked up Manhunter occasionally--I like it, but I don't like it enough to get it on a regular basis. (Though I'm prevented from doing that, anyway, as I prefer getting TPBs.) I'm tempted to give this arc a chance, but the fact that it's tied into Infinite Whatever makes me less likely to pick it up, as that entire fiasco has bored me to tears.

Anyway, excellent news. Contrary to what some people may think, DC's done a very good job of supporting this book. Heck, the fact that it even made it to 25 issues is a pretty good indication of that. It was also one of the only books that got an IDENTITY CRISIS tie-in.

Colour me intrigued about the five-issue return arc. Something major that affects the entire DCU, eh? Methinks Kate's going to be killing a major player in the DCU.

Kate kills Joker. Now THAT would get attention.

Well I was going to write Dan Dido a "Save Manhunter" letter this week but it looks like it will be a "Thanks Dan" letter instead. But Kate needs more exposure in the DCU. A Batman appearance would do wonders as would more JSA appearances. Also get that second trade out.

Andreyko said that, not DiDio, as a sales pitch to convince non-Manuhunter readers to try it. The article was very clear that DC changed their minds because of the fans. Another example of a comic fan complaining just to complain.

As for the actual news...Woot!

The best part is that those "supporters" are all friends of the writer (Andreyko). Even better is that DC knew long ago those people liked the book because they would often be quoted on the cover as a means to get people to buy the book.

I find if funny that a person who's probably never READ the book or even seen a cover (otherwise they would have known DC used their praise-filled comments previously) would jump on that when it's very clear that's not the reason.

Ah well. The 'net, I guess.

Yes, DC knew and they still canceled the series, what's your point? All it does is reaffirm that the series was brought back for five more due to fan reaction. Just like the article said, and just like I commented to the other fellow.

Whatever buddy, I've read every issue. It still does not change the fact that Andreyko said it and not Didio. It does not change the fact that it was clearly a sales pitch on the part of the author.

Certainly explains you.

Definitely a recommended title. Kate Spencer's character speaks to the "Death Wish" drive in many people while exhibiting all of the vulnerability and humanity that makes a good superhero book interesting. I never cared much for the old Manhunter series, but this one caught my attention from issue #1!

I'd been hearing good things about this book for a long time, but resisted adding yet another title. However, I ended up buying the trade. I devoured it in one evening. I had to buy every back issue I could find and then bought the new issue the next week - the first OYL issue. I guess my comic shop didn't listen to me when I asked them to put it on my pull list, because the next week, I still had to pick up a copy of it from off the shelf and make sure it was on my list(but hey, at least they order extra copies for their shelf).

This title is simply amazing, and I wish I had jumped on the bandwagon a lot sooner. Well, to try to make up for it, I'm buying 2 copies from now on to support the book. And When they were putting me down for 2 copies, I saw they had 8 people besides me, at their store that get it regularly. I guess that's better than 2. :D Hopefully, with this new push for the book, that number will increase.
