Because in Fury Peacemaker Fury's smoking a cigar and Wolverine offers an opposition soldier some cigarettes in Wolverine #41. Is 'no smoking' only for All Ages books or has it not been implemented yet or what?

The no smoking has been in effect for several YEARS at Marvel.
Marvel Knights books like Fury and Max books like The Punisher are not included... I'm surprised it was in Wolverine 41 (which I haven't read yet) though as it's a regular Marvel U book.

Well, these stories take place retroactively...and--in the case of Wolverine--show that at some point this character was indeed a smoker. As long as he is not smoking, I don't see any harm, being that his book is rated...er, something-or-other. And I thought Fury was a Marvel Knights book? (do they still do those anymore?) If so, it is geared toward a more mature audience.
I didn't hear any complaints when they showed Frenchie smoking in Moon Knight, though...
What exactly IS that policy?

I think it's friggin stupid to have a "no smoking policy" in comics. I mean, I wouldn't put a chain smoking Wolverine in a Marvel All Ages book or anything just cause that'd be a lil trashy looking with that style of art and the type of story, but I sure as sh*t wouldn't keep it out of the mainstream stuff.
Kids see people smoking on the street all the time...but ultimately it's THEIR choice whether or not they wanna start. No one put a gun to my head and made me take up smoking - that was all me at the age of 14.
If parents would start parenting their kids, they wouldn't have to worry about what their children are subjected to in a comic....or the media in general for that matter.
It's like they throw their kids in front of an X-Box or the TV (aka virtual babysitters) and are all shocked and shaken and blame the media when their kid blows up a school. Yeah, that was your doing, buddy. Maybe if you sat down with your kid and said, "Hey, it's morally wrong to blow up a school", they wouldn't do that. Or here's a novel idea - spend time with your friggin kids on a daily basis.

At the age of 21...yeah I still smoke. I quit for like a week...started right back up again. I'm not weak willed...I just didn't feel like quitting yet.

Or maybe it's a secret plot within the marve offices to overthrow Joe Q and his ridiculous policies based on personal beliefs. No offense to the man, and his loss. But I would think that bombarding us with several Truth ads per issue of Marvel comic should be sufficient enough to keep children aware of the dangers of smoking...but to not acknowledge that it is a part of LIFE and these character's lives, is pretty ignorant and selfish. Again, I understand that some of these character's have moved on from smoking because of the health benefits or whatever (Jessica Jones, J.J.Jameson, Ben Urich--encouraged by DD), and it is not a good idea to GLORIFY smoking. But PEOPLE have flaws...smoking can be one of those flaws...comic characters are people, too.
Ah. I could go on forever...but it is evident in the comics listed in above posts, that I don't really have to. Something this ludicrous cannot possibly last. Until ciggarettes are completely eliminated from the face of the earth, people will continue to kill themselves with them, and this will be translated into comic book form at some point or other.
The End.

Hey, to each their own! For me, I just woke up one morning and simply didn't have the urge or desire to smoke any longer.
If you really want to, you'll quit when you are ready. 'Til then, hey, you only die once! (unless you are a comic book character, of course)

My viewpoint, if anyone cares is that I don't care is smoking is in his books, but if they're not, then I believe he shouldn't have a double standard in his books...he doesn't want smoking in the books he's in charge of and that's ok, but why allow drinking? I think drinking is a more dangerous and hazardous risk to children than smoking and the ill-fated effects are much more readily apparant than smoking and if smoking shouldn't be allowed 'for the kids' than neither should be the endorsing of drinking. Like I said it doens't bother me, I'm 22 and drink occasionaly, but there shouldn't be a double standard...they're both bad and if you exclude one, the other more harmful product should be excluded, if not then why ban smoking? Anyone else feel the same? Me personally, who cares, they are going to smoke whether Wolverine or Nick Fury smokes or not...

I'm with JmH on this one... If you're going to ban smoking, ban drinking too. I'm 21, and a social drinker, a non-smoker (I'm a classical singer, smoking and opera don't mix), but I've always been of the opinion that it's you should be free to smoke or drink, even if the health risks are apparent. There are times when there's nothing I've wanted to do more than have a cigar, so I can see where the impulse can come from.
I'd always thought it'd be interesting to see a story with a hero who was trying to quit cigarettes without demonizing them.

Joe Q said in a recent interview that he wants no depictions of smoking in Marvel comics, so anything that got thru is either due to lazy or complicit editors. As to the ban, I hate smoking, but still think it's a bit excessive. I would ban the introduction of new characters that smoke, and wouldn't allow existing characters to start smoking, but I think banning all portrayals of smoking is a stretch.

Call me harsh, but... if you start smoking solely because you saw Wolverine doing it, you've EARNED lung cancer.

Hey I finally got someone to agree with me :D but yeah, it doesn't make sense to ban just smoking but not ban the more harmful product that kids these days are more eager to use...like the above poster said, if your smoking or drinking because Wolverine or Iron Man is doing it, then your parents have failed you in your development...
Oh and how is Allentown treating you? Getting ready for the Dorney Park splurge this summer?

I didn't start because of wolverine. I started because my sister said "Hey, wanna smoke?" and I said "yes." no one put a gun to my head...but then again, I wanted to be cool.
Then, after that, I stole mom's cigs to "punish" my family when they pissed me off...though the never caught me smoking her cigarettes...I did it in my room alone...I thought I was being rebellious when really i was just being silly.
Now they know...they don't like it...but it's not even an issue cause I'm over 18.
Whatever.

I think its just flat out stupid to say that characters can't shown smoking but its alright to have them solve problems with violence.

Hey...I work a good 72+ hour week...I deserve a lil break every now and again! ;)
And yeah, I agree with you....violence is apparently A-O-K but God forbid Wolverine be smokin a cigar while he's cutting people to shreds.

Not anymore. Wolverine and Cap both had Knights books. Then they were taken out of the Knights world and set in regular marvel. Then Cap got cancelled and Bru relaunched it.

I think it only matters if the characters are smoking.
In Wolverine he offered the cigerette but no one was actually seen smoking on panel.
But yes, the whole no smoking thing to me is such an extreme case of personal bias, it one of the things I can never get behind, even though I don't smoke myself.

Waterpipes are the only way to go!!!
As to Joe's ban, I woulnd't do it if I were EiC, but it is his perogative. If this particular policy of censorship offended me enough, I guess I'd just stop buying Marvel product.
Personally, I'm much more offended by the lack of nudity and cussing, but that's just me.

I never knew there was a no smoking policy. Though is it supposed to be for heroes or can bad guys smoke? I dread the idea of not being able to see Red Skull without a long Miss Scarlet-type ciagette filter.
