Just saw Marvel's July solicits:Written by PETER DAVID
Penciled by MIKE NORTON
Cover by CAMERON STEWART
Full moon’s out, so guess who’s comin’ to bug our webslinger? WEREWOLF BY NIGHT! And he’s turned Peter Parker’s rival, Flash Thompson, into a werewolf too! Can Spidey find a cure before the sun comes up, or is Flash forever doomed to a life of fleas and howling at the moon?
32 PGS./All Ages ...$2.99 I think it's very cool that the Marvel Adventures line is getting people like Sean McKeever and Peter David to write for it. Does anyone know if PAD will continue to write both series, or if this is a one-time gig?

Also, I'm just pimping the Marvel Adventures line as a whole, because it's some of the best "old-school" titles Marvel puts out right now.

And yet so many ppl have been ignoring it because it's supposedly "so kiddie".

I love the Marvel Adventures and Justice League Unlimited titles.

I'm totally on this one... especially for Werewolf by Night!

Actually, I'm doing eight issues in a row, and frankly, I'm having a field day. Current villain line-up: Werewolf by Night, Frankenstein's monster, Fin Fang Foom, the Grey Gargoyle, Man Thing, Hydro-Man, Whirlwind, and Pyro, plus guest appearances from the Human Torch, Doc Strange and Hawkeye.

No huge continuity hassles. No crossovers. Simple, straightforward, each-issue-self-contained stories involving Spider-Man matching wits with various bad guys.
It doesn't have profanity, explicit sex or blood and gore. Then again, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko told stories just fine without that.

In short, it's exactly what fans have been howling they want to see.

So naturally it's the lowest selling Spider-Man book around.

y'know, I never really even considered buying a Marvel Adventures book. I guess I just assumed I wouldn't enjoy them because I'm older than five. But PAD writing it, and to a similar extent McKeever too, makes me think twice.

Is it simply a retelling of old Lee/Ditko/Romita issues or is it completely original material?

Most of the earlier "Marvel Age" stuff was re-tellings of older issues, but since then, they've moved away and done original stories.

Fantastic Four #0 that came out about a year ago was hilarious featuring Dr. Doom and an iPod.

What do you think the sales and acclaim for the book would be if these stories were published in Amazing and not Marvel Adventures?

Completely original. I mean, c'mon...when did you read a story about the Werewolf by Night biting Flash Thompson?

Taking a guess? If Amazing had nothing to do with crossovers, and no continued stories?

Sales would drop.

I'll definately be picking up PAD's Adventures title, but these All Ages books do have a bit of a stigma to them amonst the traditional comic store fans.

Arguably there was a time over in DC when the best Superman and Batman books being published were the Adventure titles, with teams like Mark Millar, Scott McCloud, Ty Templeton, et al working on them. No one noticed.

My understanding however is that the title sold like gangbusters in the checkout lines of the supermarket and newsstands where kids who dug the Animated series bought them.

So even if sales aren't reflected in the comic shop sales charts, I would imagine there is a built in audience for them once the Adventures titles get collected into digest sized color volumes around the time the next Spiderman movie is released next summer.

It's definitely getting added to my pull list. I'll probably try the Avengers one, too.

Do you know if Cam Stewart is doing all the covers for your run?

But isn't that kind of true for every title, regardless of publisher in today's market. I don't think there is any mainstream series out today that is essentially a bunch of "done in one" stories.

I bought the first couple of issues of Marvel Adventures Spidey for my youngest brother and he just didn't like them. I assumed that since he was 9 and thought poorly of them that they must have been bad. Still, I think I'll go take those back from him and give them a shot. I am definitely going to give PAD's issues a try. I really appreciate his work on FNSM 5-7. Good stuff.

Frankenstein's monster too!

With both Werewolf by Night and the Monster of Frankenstein, you may have won over this classic monster fan. Though, I don't know if I'd exactly call them villians, but they sure aren't heroes either.

Plus, a guest appearance by Hawkeye. Gotta get that one.

C'mon... splurge a little!

I read all of the first series of Runaways in digest form and while that didn't necessarily detract from the story, I could tell there were certain parts with lots of word balloons that were covering up neat panels of art.

If you're not a format elitist, then check out the digests, but I've got to wonder if putting Peter David on this book isn't Marvel's unofficial line in the sand for keeping these titles around.

these also come out in those handy-dandy 2-in-1 Marvel Adventure flip books. I think they're actually a little wider available than regular comics, I see 'em around at convience stores and book stores and always make a point to try to grab one. Now that I ain't buying smokes in convience stores, that is...
