<blockquote>All hype aside, 30 Days Of Night is the hottest book of 2002. Months before the first issue ever saw print, a bidding war was raging in Hollywood. Senator International won the movie rights, with Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) set to produce. Series creator Steve Niles is currently working on the screenplay.
Even though it was overprinted by 100%, 30 Days Of Night #1 sold out within two weeks and the second printing was gone even faster. 30 Days Of Night is now #1 on Wizard's list of "Hot 10 Comics."
In January, IDW Publishing will release a trade paperback of Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith's huge hit. It tells the story of an isolated Alaskan town that is plunged into darkness for a month each year when the sun sinks below the horizon. As the last rays of light fade, the town is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires bent on an uninterrupted orgy of destruction. Only the small town's husband-and-wife Sheriff team stand between the survivors and certain destruction.
The 30 Days Of Night trade paperback will have an introduction by one of horror's elite, Clive Barker. In addition, the 30 Days of Night trade paperback features eight all-new story pages NOT included in the original mini-series release. "Steve and Ben really wanted to give something extra to fans who buy the trade paperback. They've added some amazing vampire battles that happen between issues 1 and 2," said Publisher Ted Adams.
30 Days of Night trade paperback will be published by IDW Publishing in January 2003. It's 80 full-color pages and retails for $17.99.</blockquote>

I was thinking of checking this out if it was ever collected as a trade, but eighteen bucks for 80 pages? That price seems pretty steep. Wasn't this a 3-issue limited series? How much was each issue of the original limited series? $2.99? Why the steep markup for the trade collection? This trade should be priced at $9.95.

The original series was already high-priced ($3.99 each) - so it isn't such a "steep markup" :)
The same goes for Popbot collection: 3 issues, $7.99 each - collected for $35...
That doesn't concern me, though - as I own all original issues :D

Great book and well worth the money.
My main problem with the property is the film version. I think it is great that Sam Raimi is involved, but unless they get hooked up with a major distributiion house, it is not going to get the exposure it deserves, I fear.

That's still only $12 for the original 3 issues versus $18 for the trade. I think a $6 markup is still pretty steep. I think it sounds like an interesting book, but that price point is just unreasonable, IMO.

You mean Sam (Spider-Man) Raimi? I think people are returning his clals a little more than they used to these days, so he may have a bit more push in Hollywood that you're thinking.

I have the three editions... and I'm probably buying the TPB so I can check out the new pages.
Screw it! My kids won't go to college!

I REALLY want to read this, but you're right about the $18. I want to think I'll find a discounted one somewhere...

I got the first issue second printing for $6 at a convention. It was the only copy seen at the whole convention. I read it and thought it was a great concept. I'll try and get my shop to order the trade paperback.

Oh, it's still extremely steep. It is more than 50% more for the collected edition. $3.99 x 3 = 11.97. This is $17.99. That's an extra $6.02 for the reprint. That means the 8 extra pages cost $6.02. I've really been looking forward to this trade since I didn't hear about the series until the price of the first issue skyrocketed. I'm not paying $18.00 for 80 pages of anything.

It's a ripoff. $18 for 80 pages? I like my trades to be 10 cents a page. I'll look for it at Amazon, or comicnow.com.

You guys are right about the steep price. I thought trades were supposed to be cheaper because they were to be more accessible to the people who couldn't pay so much for the single issues.
I also have the single issues but I wanted to get the trade so that I can let people borrow it cuz I thought it was a great series. But now I gotta think twice.....
Is it cuz IDW is an independent company and this is sadly the only way to turn a decent profit for an independent company?

it probably has something to do with them being a smaller outfit, with smaller print runs. While they are publishing trades, they're no where near the volume of Marvel, DC, or probably even someone like an Oni or AiT/PlanetLar...

The UK edition from Titan Books will be a bit more more reasonably priced at £9.99 (approx $15 US), an unusual move for Titan who are well known for their high prices usually.

Try <a href="http://www.khepri.com." target="_blank">www.khepri.com.</a> I get all my comics from them, and if you preorder, you'll get 30% off. That drops the book down to about $12.56 which is where the book should be anyway.

Again great guy! Amazing talent! Popular, especially now, but without the backing of a major studio on the distribution end it could all be for naught.

Without a doubt, one of the best mini-series I've read in quite a while. Great writing, and fantastic art.

Yeah! One month too late to benefit from Christmas traffic. Good marketing IDW. Glad the old CSI comic had a higher priority. :p

Well yeah - that's kinda what I was trying to say, but I guess mumbled it. Even before Spider-Man, Raimi's star was in the ascendant, as A Simple Plan, The Gift, and For the Love of the Game got decent reviews, and pulled him out of the, as studios probably saw it, Evil Dead/Darkman pigeonhole he'd put himself into.
He may not have been in EW's list of powerfuls in Hwood (he may have, I don't have the issue beside me), but I think he could get major studios to pay attention to a pitch for the film as long as his name is attached.
In fact, I'd bet the simple phrase "From the guy who brought you Spider-Man" guarantees sales to a set number of theater chains, no matter the product attached.
For all the crop of comics that are in the Hollywood pipeline, I'd put this one near the top in terms of actually becoming a movie, even over whatever CG property Darabont has his hands on.

Geez, nobody looks at smilies anymore :( Sure, it is steep, I only wrote that it isn't such steep markup as John suggested - he suggested 100% more than single issues, while it's "only" 50% more :p

Sounds like a great story. And, as others have said, *WAY* overpriced. Maybe if the movie gets made, there'll be a cheaper edition. Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to enjoy the movie when it comes out -- or buy a used copy on ebay, if I can find one cheap.

You can order this trade right now for $11.69 on <a href="http://www.preordercomics.com" target="_blank">http://www.preordercomics.com</a>

If you pre-order through almost any bookstore like Amazon or perhaps one of the links mentioned here, you can get it for about 30% off which removes the "markup."
And if you bought the original issues and sold em on ebay like I did for over $100, the trade price doesn't seem so bad anymore.

hopefully, this will make up for the "high" cover price:
>> FROM IDW PRESS RELEASE...
IDW Publishing is pleased to announce that the first 7,500 copies of the book will include a tip-in plate hand-signed by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. IDW is over-printing their initial orders, so retailers can still get copies of the book with the hand-signed tip-in plate if they place advance re-orders right now (Diamond Item NOV022614). The book will remain in print after these copies are gone, but only the first 7,500 copies will include the tip-in plates.
In addition to the previously announced 8 all-new story pages, IDW Publishing has also added an extra 24 pages to the book which feature Steve Niles script for the first issue.
And there's more: the book will feature top-notch printing, including cover flaps, covers that feature a matte finish with spot uv gloss, and the best paper available on the market.
The best part of all is that all of this is at NO EXTRA COST TO THE CONSUMER OR RETAILER.
