View Full Version : BRIAN WOOD WEEK: WHY AM I HERE?

Blame Matt Brady, he told me to do it.

After all, what do I need a “Brian Wood Week” at Newsarama for? My publisher gives me a Brian Wood Month every January. But Matt’s cool, a solid guy who always has my back, and frankly I think he could use a little time off.

The point of this, as I understand it, is to have me “take over” the content programming for a week, put up one or two pieces of my own creation per day in addition to whatever news and features come up. Interviews with people who don’t normally get a lot of attention, or people I think can’t ever get enough written about them. Writers and artists and industry people that I like personally, and also to talk at length about my upcoming projects DEMO and The Couriers 02.

If you know who I am, chances are you know me one of the three following ways:

- You found my first series Channel Zero back when it was in single issues at Image Comics, in which case you are truly Elite and are my buddy for life.

- You first heard about me when Warren Ellis and I were writing Generation X over at Marvel. Or you heard about me when the whole NYX thing first blew up several years ago (also probably where you first heard the name Dave Choe as well)

- You have come across some of my more recent books I’ve written from AiT/Planet Lar, Oni, or Vertigo. The Couriers, Pounded, Couscous Express, Fight For Tomorrow, etc…

Comics were never a childhood love of mine. I don’t think I ever read them. One of my redneck cousins up in Vermont gave me a few important books to read in the 80’s, like Watchmen, but aside from that, I couldn’t have possibly cared less about comics. I was a painter all my life, working in a sort of ripped-off German Expressionist style, trying to be Max Beckman or something. I couldn’t even get into comics for the art – it was just far too removed from what I did. It wasn’t until I walked into St. Marks Comics when I was 24 that I thought maybe comics were something I could create. I was a fan of Kent Williams’ illustration, and I heard he had drawn a few comics, so I went to check ‘em out. That day, the first book I picked up off the shelves was Shadows Fall from Vertigo, and the experience really did change my life. I literally stopped trying to be a painter and started working on my comics craft.

Since then, I have read just about every comic I could care to read. I have tremendous love for the indie stuff, specifically the stuff Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, D&Q, and Highwater puts out. Peter Bagge’s Hate is probably my favorite comic of all time (and Bagge is the only creator I have met that reduces me to babbling incoherence in person – I am that much in awe). I will instantly buy anything James Kochalka does (took me awhile to realize what a genius that guy is), and Blankets (http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4620&highlight=Blankets) by Craig Thompson is absolutely something I cannot recommend enough. Other standout creators include Julie Doucet, Clowes, Dave Choe, Jeffrey Brown, Dave Cooper, and Josh Divine (www.trashola.com).

(I heard someone at SDCC tell me that Brett Warnock at Top Shelf loves my work, and that he would publish something of mine at the drop of a hat. True or not, hearing that just about made my whole weekend.)

As much as I like industry in-fighting and gossip and Rich Johnston’s column, really, in the end it’s just about doing the comics, for me. I lust after no corporate title to work on, I don’t care if the current Marvel regime wouldn’t give me work to save my life, and really, what people say to me on my message boards really has no negative impact on my life. Most of the time I keep my head down and work as hard as I can to make my life better, for me and on my terms (its working, too). Most other creators and industry people I will be talking about this week are pretty much the same way, and its something I really admire and respect. It ain’t easy.

So I’ll be here all week, posting stories with Matt, and reading responses. I toyed with the idea of getting someone to interview me for this little intro, but I figured it might be more interesting if people wanted to ask me questions here instead, I could have responses at the end of the week. Your choice, but I would endeavor to answer whatever was seriously asked of me.

In the meantime, check me out at my website (http://www.brianwood.com[/url) and my forum (http://forums.delphiforums.com/ChannelZero/start).

This should be mighty interesting, can't remember having seen something like this before.

With everything you are now doing, can you finally support yourself fully by creating comics or are you still working for Rockstar Games?

Welcome aboard, Brian. Should be interesting (by the way, Channel Zero and Pounded rocked).

nice to know i've got a buddy for life in Brian Wood... and now i can finally back up what i've been saying for ages... that i'm an elite... :D

in all seriousness though... it's great to see Newsarama giving control over to someone like BW... he's got a fresh take on the comic industry and many a comic lover could do well listening to what he has to say...

i'm telling you... it's a matter of time until the AiT/PlanetLar posse take over the industry... and then the party will really begin...

Hey Arni

I'm adding this to the list of questions for the end of the week.

Hey Brian--

I'm curious why you decided to do DEMO monthly? It seems outside of your, and especially AiT/PlaNetLar's, belief in moving to a book based/OGN industry? The Old Bastard's Manifesto and all that.

I was surprised to see it and Scurvy Dogs solicited as monthlies and was curious about how you convinced Larry to change his mind...he blamed you. :)

Keep up the great work. I think your books get better and better. Loved CousCous, Couriers, and Jennie One.

Hey Brian

There's a fourth category: people who ran into you on the Ellis forum and discovered your work that way (and we're awfully thankful.)

Best

You say that like there's a problem with Marvel and DC.

Is there?

So when does the Eastcost Ait/PlanetLar bureau open? Meaning: Is there a possibility for you doing comics full time in the near future?

With Me, Becky, and Rob G all on the team, Planet Lar East is more or less open for business. The logo bullet on the back of DEMO will reflect that.

But alas, it remains a virtual bureau for now. We need to sell a few more comics before it happens for real :)

couldn't this also be called: Matty takes a week off and Brian Wood gets a mysterious phone call from Mr. Brady regarding "those photos". Like anyone would willingly take the abuse Wood is gonna get...

Interesting and a nice idea.

I read Couscous Express from a friend. It was a bit funny. When I read the introduction it was talking about Channel Zero, not Couscous Express. Exception were the last two sentences which were something in the spirit of "There are a lot of stories worth telling. This is such a story.". I snickered, but read Couscous anyway. It was okay. Loved the art.

But the content of Channel Zero really appealed to me. I bought the book, read it, enjoyed the art and loved it. It's funny how the next day I read an article about how Che Guevara and how his image was so commercially exploited.

I see you enjoy graphic novels which are mostly a more directed and conscious use of the medium. There's a story to tell and the comic is the medium it goes through.

I never read your Gen X or any of the revamps at the time, but is telling stories through a book like that with characters that already have been defined and which you can't make your own too much still statisfying enough for a storyteller in comparison with your other work?

If you would get an offer from one of the big ones, would you accept it, assuming you'd get the liberty you'd want and need for that?

Brian, what do you think of the new NYX title written by Joe Quesada with art by Joshua Middleton?

ah, who knows? I havent read it yet. might be good, might be bad. based on available art, it seems to be tapping into the early 90's New York rave scene, and that doesnt hold much interest for me.

Be sure to let us know what you think when the issue comes out, IF you're reading it, that is.

I didn't like Jenny One. It was just empty. But I loved Becky Cloonan's art and I'm a huge fan of Brian Wood's stuff. In fact, I think I own every single one of his books.

But more importantly, when is THE WALK going to come out? I wonder if he's working on that at all. Cuz I remember seeing a really gorgeous promo picture for it on his site a long time ago. And it was in colour too. Not that I don't appreciate black and white art, but I've always been curious to see what Brian's palette would be like.

Can't wait for Demo and The Couriers!

i've said before a few times online (i think here on newsarama) that THE WALK has been shelved, probably permanently.
