Updated with 3 more pages of preview art.
Early next month, one of Marvel’s four oldest heroes steps back into the spotlight that he hasn’t seen since the late ‘80s – courtesy of Dan Slott, Andrea DiVito and Lara Villari, Ben Grimm, aka, the Thing returns to an ongoing series.
Sure, there have been miniseries and one shots starring the blue-eyed hero, but the new #1 is the first return to an ongoing series for the Thing since his last series ended in 1986.
And if Slott has anything to say about it, he’ll be old and gray and still writing this series, with no end in sight.
We spoke with the writer and nabbed a preview of issue #1.
Newsarama: First off, let’s just remind people where, when and how this series picks up – this ties back to JMS’ Fantastic Four #527, where Ben learned that he’s got about a kajillion dollars in the bank, right?
Dan Slott: The Idol of Millions is now worth billions.
NRAMA: Can you give the short form of where that money came from?
DS: Basically, the way JMS set it up, Reed’s assets are frozen and neither he, Sue, or Johnny can access any of Fantastic Four Industry’s money._But, through a loophole, Ben has control over his quarter of the FF financial empire.

One of the first comics I bought with my own money was the first issue of the first THING series where Ben remains on the Secret Wars planet because he can change back to human form. It was a great sci-fantasy comic with spaceships and aliens and of course the ever lovin' Thing. I had previously known The Thing from the cartoon where he was a teenager who became the orange-rocky hero by connecting two rings on either hand together. I liked the true Thing a lot better. A regular guy, kind of gruff but with a kind heart.
I've always hoped for a new series and I know Dan Slott is the man for the job. Spider-Man/Human Torch and She-Hulk are great examples of what super-hero comics should be like and I can not wait for the first issue of The Thing.

Cannot wait for this. Loved the first series. Loved Marvel Two-In-One. Looks and sounds like one of the most promising new series coming out of Marvel right now.
:D
great interview. makes me want to pick the series up. it's so nice when someone has an enthusiasm about the subject matter, rather than just doing it for a paycheck.

My favorite era of Marvel Two-In-One were the multi-part stories like "The Pegasus Project" or "The Serpent Crown Affair." Both had art by George Perez and/or John Byrne, I believe.
To me, these were the best issues of the series and it was because it seemed that, even though these stories were fun, there was something important and integral to the Marvel Universe happening here. MTIO wasn't just a throwaway series during this point.
If Slott can recapture this feeling and not have his stories devolve into JLI/She-Hulk comedy, then I'll be on board.

Wow, this looks awesome, Slott is on a roll, with She-Hulk, GLA, Spidey/Human Torch and now this, he's becoming one of Marvel's best writers.
I love how the Marvel Universe has room for books like this, and at the same time Bendis' Daredevil or Ellis' Iron Man, which are polar opposites of Slott's stuff, yet still great reads.
The Thing has always been my favourite member of the FF, and it is awesome to see him get this series, he deserves the respect, I for one cannot wait for Hercules to show up (check She-Hulk Vol. 1 to see Slott knock a humorous Hulk outta the park).
Andrea DiVito is also outstanding, I hope he's timely, a series like this will benefit from a steady release date.

One of my first comics was a Two-in-One issue guest starring Ghost Rider. It had GR rising his bike and Thing on a green flying vehicle on the cover. It looked like they were racing. As a 4 year old, I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.
Nostalgia aside, this series sounds great! Books like this, She Hulk, and Marvel Team Up are bringing back the spirit in Marvel books that I grew up with. There's a time and a place for super-serious books, but there's also a time and a place for stories that are fun to read. And that looks to be what the new Thing series is all about.

This is one book that's definitely on my must-read list already. I just finished reading the Two-In-One and Thing solo run for the first time and a lot of it was gold. Project Pegasus, #50, #100 and Rocky Grimm: Space Ranger were all pretty great.
This is going to be one of the best comics on the stands. Here's why:
We’re gonna do some three part, two part, and done-in-one adventures—stories that’ll be F-U-N! There’ll be surprises, guest-stars, and a whole mess a’ clobbering! No doom, no gloom, and no dark n’ gritty muckitty-muck. Just superheroes doing superhero stuff and acting like—well—heroes!

It looks awesome, and Slott's obvious love--nay, obsession--for Mrs. Grimm's little boy looks to be infectious. :D

It's clear from reading this interview (and others) that Dan Slott and I read the same comics when we were kids. I added this to my pull list the day I heard about a new ongoing Thing title. This is going to be great.
No waiting for the trade on this one, Dan, I swear!

I think DAN SLOTT is a real fun writer to read, but I'm a bit disappointed that none of his work including his wonderful She-Hulk never seem to be good enough for Marvel to deserve hardcover treatment
Dan please do something about this

Marvel Two-In-One was always one of my favorite books. It had a great anchor in the Thing, one of Marvel's best characters, and it allowed you to sample the rest of the Marvel Universe. And poker. And beer.
To me, this preview and interview give the impression the book will continue that spirit of fun-lovin' exploration.
November cannot get here soon enough.

Honestly, I had ZERO interest in this book until I saw this. I think Ben is one of the most misunderstood and misinterpreted (by writers) characters in the MU. Slott's take on Ben seems spot-on, and those preview pages look great. I'm definitely on board with this.

Not a negative post yet, awesome. I figured a stick-in-the-a$$ poster would have bitched about the THING series not being all Watchmenized and stuff, the THING is afterall just like Batman and all  . It's about time Marvel quit trying to copy the Authority with every single one of their ongoing series, and thank God for Slott's new THING series :D .

Finally! Thing is getting his own series back! And the first issue seems to future Black Goliath. Man how long has it been since we saw that guy? And next issue the Constrictor, who has always been one of my favorite Marvel villains since his appearances in Deadpool. I hope this series stays for a long time and even makes it after #25! If not, I'll start a petition somewhere to save the book, like with Spider-Girl and Weapon X.

From superherouniverse.com:
This is the Thing cartoon that was a part of the (believe it or not) Fred and Barney meet the Thing show. It was billed as the same show, but Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble had separate adventures each show from the thing. The Thing was a teenager named Benji who could turn into the grown up Thing when needed by using his Thing ring. Cartoons back then may have been silly, but you know they were fun and just down right creative. No Fantastic Four on this series, but just a year or two before the Fantastic Four had a cartoon series with Herbie the Robot replacing the Human Torch.
I totally forgot about that cartoon until that post. Wow. I must have repressed memories of it, because it was truly a pretty awful show.
And I must say I also had no interest in this series until I read the interview and saw the artwork. Now I will definitely be helping them get to #25.

Been lookinbg forward to this book since it was announced, but thios interview has made me convinced to head out the day it comes out to read it. Since I dropped FF because of JMS (thanks to his horrible writing on ASM last year), I wasn't interested in the Thing getting a new ongoing.
But I like Dan Slott, and I like the way the art looks, and I'll just buy the first issue if there's one left, and then I'll see whether that was fun enough for the second. If the first issue is fun, I'll start preordering it.
Since I buy too many comics as it is, that's a compliment ;) And to Dan Slott: I hope you'll get a shot at ASM eventually, it's what I'm hoping for. (bring back the Tarantula! :D)

I've been interested in this since I heard they were giving Ben Grimm his own ongoing...FINALLY. When I heard Slott was writing it, I got even more interested. This interview just pumps up my eager anticipation even more. Hawkman and JSA have been firmly planted in the number one and two spots on my list for the last few years, only alternating between the two of them. This title looks to kick those two off the top of the heap.

I'm picking this up for three reasons:
1-Black Goliath
2-DiVito's awesome visuals and
2-Dan Slott said this would not be all about jokes, but more about old fashioned superhero action/adventure.
If he can keep his word regarding that, I am a fan for the long haul (even though it's clear Slott has a fondness for lame characters...Cauldron the Scalding man...?
I hope Thing faces better villains than that.

Anyway, I'll be definately getting ths in trade. Sorry but I don't feel compelled to get any Marvel comic in single form since they are so good with delivering the goods in my favorite format.
Besides, Thing is my least favorite FF character and always has been. I only loved Marvel 2in1 because of the guest stars. When the Thing comic hit the stands I think I lasted about 12 iissues.
Still, this is Slott and I have faith in him. If GLA and Spidey/Human Torch haven't proven it yet, this guys knows how to write fun comics. (And tjhat last issue of Spidey/Human Torch remains one of my favorites from Marvel in a LONG time!)
Any chance of a Wundarr/Aquarian guest star/cameo anything?

When I saw there was going to be a THING series, I was skeptical. When I saw Slott was writing it, most of the skepticism was gone and it was on my pull list. Now, after this interview, I'm almost ready to rate how much I liked the first issue...before it is in my hands. :-)

This sounds like the kind of comic I want to be reading.
It's nice that at least one of the big two are finally making books for kids that teens and adults can enjoy (Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius) and books for teens and adults that kids can enjoy (Thing; spiderman and Human Torch).
This is the kind of one-upmanship that I wouldn't mind seeing from DC and Marvel.

I have minimal interest in the Thing, but I'm buying this book sight unseen (the preview pages word balloons are too tiny for me) based on the genius that is Slott and Di Vito's art, who blew me away on Stormbreaker this year...

Next time I hit the comic shop, this book goes on the pull list for most of the reasons that nearly every poster ahead of me mentioned. It looks like a well-written comic that'll be fun to read, Slott's got Benjy's voice perfectly, the art looks great, it's got Bill Foster and... well... the world needs to see what that 25th issue is going to be like. This is also a nice reminder that I need to hunt down the rest of the DeFalco run from the 80's.
The Thing cartoon. Eh. Nothing's got Turbo Teen (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Interview/4199/TurboTeenWebSite.html) beat for most bizarre transformation sequence. That's just too creepy.

Another thing that's very enticing to me about this book: The covers: they are not "artsy" pastiches of Photoshop-assisted techniques, or static paintings of the heroes looking all realistic yet cold and inert, no siree...these are awesome, old-fashioned, action-packed goodies of pencilled, inked and colored superhero fabulosity.
All I am gonna say is this, Dan: Please convince Marvel to give She_Hulk at least one cover similar to these one day?
I would love to see a Shulkie cover that isn't painted to cold, boobalistic perfection, but has a fantastically old-fashioned, pencilled-and-inked, action-packed scene like the THING ones.!
PLEASE????

You're thinking of Jim Wilson, Rick Jones's erstwhile successor in the role of the Hulk's teenage "sidekick" and the nephew of Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon.

Can't wait to read this. She-Hulk was AWESOME and I hope Thing keeps the same humor. Maybe DC could give him some humor books to do someday (Inferior 5, Captain Carrot, Ambush Bug, Angel/Ape, Legion of Substitute Heroes, Stanley and his Monster, etc.)
This has to be the first time in Newsarama history where a Marvel thread got 0 negative comments. WOW!

What's up with all the love on the Rama? Wasn't even gonna post because this thread is like a broken record but... Cannot wait to get this, She-Hulk #1 was fantastic, DiVito's art looks great, Slott's the man, etc, etc.
Let me go out on a limb and proclaim that Dan Slott is one of the top 5 best writers working today. And he does his magic by being neither grim nor gritty. Whatta guy.

As a kid the Marvel Two-In-One series was golden for me. And I really enjoyed the first Thing series also.
This may be the book that finally gets me back into buying Marvel comics again.
Great interview. Great character. Great writer. Great artist.
One Must Read Book.

Dan please do something about this

Now what's people's obsession with other people's personal preferences for books, now who is really obsessing, if not borderline trolling; my comment is addressed to Marvel & Dan Slott, so find someone else to obsess over
As for swearing, a lot of folks buy those hardcovers and golden age Masterworks, so get over yourself for a second

I totally dig what Dan Slott writes and I think the
colorist is doing a great job but I'm still not sold
on Andrea as a penciler on a main monthly title like
this.
He should be so thankful that the coloring is saving
his work. Really he should be cutting the colorist a
part of his check. Just go back and look at the
fill-in on Captain America he did compared to this.
That book looked so bad, pencils, inks and coloring.

Alright alright already! Sheesh! I was on the fence about picking this up (love Marvel Two-In-One, but haven't been interested in the Thing much since), but this interview and the preview pages convinced me...
Damn Slott! (heh, maybe he should add an "m" to his name)

I love that, with appearances by Nighthawk and (I see he's going by just "Goliath" now) Bill Foster, this is almost a makeshift modern Marvel Two-In-One, without the cheesy name.
It looks great. Good job, Marvel.

Yeh I remember how interminably long it lasted. I stand by what I said about lasting 12 issues. Frankly, I'm not sure why I stood by that long.
Oddly enough, the only issue I actually remember from that series was issue #4, the Lockjaw one. (It was 4 right?)
All the space alien world crap and wrestling stuff I can easily forget. (I did continue to thumb through the stuff until the end.)
Especially bad that issues of that series are getting stuck into the FF Visionaries John Byrne so I have to re-live the series sigh.
I think the THING series is a great idea. But i wont buy it cause i think Andrea DiVitos art sucks. I'm bummed.

Dan had me with this statement:
Marvel Two-In-One Annual #7: The Thing goes up against the Champion of the Universe… and won’t stay down!
This comic is one of my favorite EVER... I found this annual years ago when I was in a used book store... and I remember getting chills and so excited and whipped up by Thing's refusal to give up. Honestly, this comic was actually very important to my Jr.High psyche... it actually showed me what it looked like to NEVER give up.
I don't read many comics that give positive messages like these any more... and I think that this is what young comic readers today are really missing...
Note to Dan:
Dan, PLEASE give me one rock-em-sock-em issue with Ben & Hawkeye! These guys would OBVIOUSLY get along and have a hoot...

WOW! The preview writing and art for issue #1 looks amazing. I love the old school approach to super-hero stories, and Dan Slott definitely seems to be having fun with the book. Now, to track down a comic book shop. :)

This preview is great writing & art wise. I'll pick this up. Thing is one of my favorite characters.
I love how everyone suddenly starts claiming they have whiplash... even the bad guy. Ha! That's awesome!
I wasn't 100% sure I liked JMS's idea to make Ben rich because I was afraid he would loose his everyman charm. But, I trust Dan Slott to give us some interesting and fun stories with it.

oh lordy...three more pages and no signs of fourth-wall breaking or potshots at fanboys or lame jokes...just action, good-natured fun and Grimmalicious clobbering (plus some hints of romantic drama with the whole Alicia thing)
And to top it all, thet deliciously "traditional" art!!!
I never thought I would say this about a Dan Slott title, but this could become one of my favorite books, based on those preview pages alone...
(Now all this title needs is some She-Hulk appearances and I'll be even happier...I need my Shulkie fix!!!!!)
And THUNDRA needs to show up...she just has to!
Dan, this looks awesome man...!
Can you believe I'm saying this????

Looks promising. Wish these guys the best of luck with the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing.
MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE was one of my favorite books growing up. Wasn't the greatest book on the shelf, but it had the greatest Marvel character outside of Spider-Man and that was good enough for me.

Hi Guys,
I really, really, really want to be excited about this book! The art looks great! The writing looks great! It even stars the Thing and most of the supporting cast of Marvel 2-in-1... However, I'm afraid that this background theme of the rich Thing facing fans who want to sue, and hero pals who want to get funding from Unca Benjy would get on my nerves very quickly! If that goes beyond a handful of issues.... EEEEEKKK!
Thanks,
Dax

A LOT???? Hmmm I doubt it's a lot but at $50 a pop they don't need to have too many buyers I suppose.
Personally, I wouldn't own as many as I do but I much prefer the better paper than what the comics were originally printed on. (And even after owning most of the originals after all these years, once I sell them to finance the Masterworks, I still end up with extra $$$$ leftover!)
But, don't worry Renaud *wink* I'm hardly obsessing over you! I'd probably see a Jim Hammond movie, but the onlly REAL Human Torch is Johnny Storm! Enjoy your olden age stuff! :)

Trust me, you're not the first person to make this observation...
The only reason I haven't made such a declaration myself is his apparent lack of venom towards Quesada - Renaud was happy enough to let loose at every and any opportunity. That, and his ability to speak proper English.
But I remain to be completely convinced it's not him. I outted Renaud once on The Pulse - I'm happy to do it again here if necessary.

As for this title, I think I've now gone from 'interested' to 'likely' to 'guaranteed buyer' over the course of the last 2 or 3 months, since the book was first announced.
As soon as I saw the cover to #2 (with Constrictor and Nighthawk), I was sold. Now I'm positively salivating. I've always been a big fan of Dan's (since Arkham Asylum) but it's clear he GETS Ben.
I was always a huge MTIO fan - I have #60 to 100 (and plenty before that), and if this book is anywhere near as good as it was back then, I'll be ecstatic. :) :)
