View Full Version : THE GOON.....I'm hooked.

So I bought the 25 cent issue of The Goon that was on sale last week. I've seen Erik Powell's art online a bunch, and I've thumbed through a few issues. I thought it looked nice, but didn't pick it up before for some reason. But at a quarter, how could I pass it up. Damn what a great book! The art is gorgeous in a horrific way of course, but what got me was how funny it was.
Like I said in the title, I'm hooked. Anyone else buy this? I saw a really nice looking hardcover collection too. I think it was called the Fancy Pants Edition, or something like that. I think I'll be picking this up VERY soon.

What's the skinny with this book? How many issues so far, trades, etc.?

the same thing happened to me, I bought the 25 cent issue over the weekend (grabbed the last copy!), based on Black Terror's recommendation.
Loved it!!! :)
Thought it was a really funny, cute book in the same vein as Usagi Yojimbo IMO. Just w/monsters instead of samurai's/ninja's etc.
I'm hunting down tpb #0 soon. Check out Dark Horse Comics list (on their website) of all Goon tpbs and stuff...

They're up to issue 14 or so, but there were a handful of issues before, published by Albatross.
The Fancy Pants hardcover is essentially the 'best of' the Goon (I put quotes because every issue has been awesome, plus the letter columns are a hoot) and puts them in sequences different from when they were released. I haven't picked it up yet (probably going on the Christmas list), but I imagine some plot lines that were spaced out might be presented in a more linear fashion.
Though I encourage the reading of the trade paperbacks in order, as there are some nice running jokes and interesting reveals.

So read the regular trades first and NOT the Fancy Pants version?

I don't know, I haven't read or even seen the Fancy Pants version. I read the trade paperbacks (in 1, 0, 2, 3 order if I recall correctly, which made for some interesting reveal of information.)
This series is designed with the monthly format in mind as the trade paperbacks read really fast. I'd recommend getting caught up and start reading the monthly (the most recent issue came about three weeks ago.)

Right on. I found the list of merchandise (http://www.darkhorse.com/search/search.php?frompage=userinput&sstring=the+goon) over on the Dark Horse website, as suggested. Lots of cool stuff. :)

I've just read the 25 cent issue and I'm hooked. This was my first look at "The Goon" and I was very impressed at how well the book flows. The writer and artist just seem to compliement each other perfectly. The art reminded me of the old "Terry and The Pirates" syndicated newspaper style.
So now I have another book to pull from outside the DC/Marvel pond:
The Goon
B.P.R.D.
G.I. Joe
Invincible
Hellboy

Actually, in one of the trade paperbacks (the most recent, as I recall) the foreward is written by someone who compares Powell's art to that of Eisner and how The Spirit was probably off adventuring on the good side of town and The Goon keeps the law on the bad side of town.

I tried Yosagi, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I appreciate the craftsmanship taking place, but the story just didn't hook me.

Trust me, I know. I just didn't ever read the book until I picked up the first trade on a whim one day. I've just bought it that way ever since. It's great to read in a big chunk, but you are right, it's a bitch to wait 6 months after those cliffhangers.

Hey, another Goon thread, and I didn't even notice it until now.
Well, good news toy fans, Mezco has put out 4 very bad ass Goon figures, 2 of which I picked up today, and they are absolutely phenomenal.
Here's a link: http://www.mezcotoyz.com/products.asp?pline=goon2005
I got Frankie and the "Surly" Goon chase variant. Good stuff. The accessories are awesome, decent articulation and absolutely dead on sculpting. I'm in love. Just got to gather up a little scratch for the Zombie Priest now . . .
Here's hoping to a Wave 2 with The Buzzard, Spider, Fishy Pete and the Mudd Bruddas.
Also it's worth noting for you horror fans, there are a lot of Lovecraftian references sprinkled throughout the comic. Such as a creature that looks remarkably like Brown Jenkin in the Hellboy issue. . . Not what you'd expect for something as silly as the Goon. It's kind of a Call of Cthulhu: The Comedy, sort of deal.

Well i tried the 25 cent issue (got my copy in the mail today) and wasn't terribly impressed. I mean, i get it and all, it just wasn't that good of a read (imho anyway). I won't be picking up any future issues.

I actually agree, I don't think that the first issue was the best.
But overall I think it's one of the best series in comics. And the Eisners seem to agree, so there's always that. *shrug*
To each their own.

So that was a reprint of the first issue?
Cause i actually enjoyed the backing story quite a bit. Are the rest of them more like the backing story? I might be willing to track down #2 to see if i like it or not.

Yeah that was a reprint of the first issue. The newer stuff gets sillier.
2-4 I can't recall the exact details of. I have 5-Present in single issue format, and Issue 7 is the one that originally got me into the Goon. It's where he gets turned into a giant, wall-eyed gorilla fights a Godzilla-sized lizard that speaks Spanish. El Lagarto Hombre. Funny ass stuff. Even better when you translate what the hell Lagarto's saying.
I also recall that 5 was where Goon, Frankie, the Mudd Bruddas, Professor Alloy, and Merle the Werewolf assault Lonely Street where all the zombies hang out. That's a pretty good one too. I dunno, I leant my Goon trades out about 6 months ago and I'm just now getting them back this Saturday, so you'll have to forgive my spotty memory.

Actually, it wasn't a reprint of the first issue. It was all new, including the back-up story. It tied up a few plot lines and saw the re-appearance of Etevs (the goat with the fez.)

Okay, that makes more sense. Seemed like a lot of things should have previously happened if that was a first issue. I didn't realize it was all new material though. That's a lot of new stuff for only a quarter,as opposed to all the other quarter books that are like 8 pages.

This damn comic hooked me too. Between the Goon last week and She-Hulk this week my pulls keep going up and up yet my salary stays the same. What's a comic collecting schmoe to do?

No, it wasn't all new. I've read that issue about 3 times before because I have it in the trades. I particularly remember Spider getting clocked over $5 and the Bog Lurk yelling " 'Ats Nasty!" in a cockney accent. The back-up story is new, but the rest of the issue isn't. I'll bet one of my kidneys on it!
Because I know I'm right! :p

Ah, you were correct!
It's been so long since I've read that original story, I must have forgotten that the FBI agent plot line was resolved.
