Yes, it's totally blasphemous, but I'm loving this book.
Just read the third issue today.
But my favorite line so far is from #2, when Pope says, "Get behind me, Jesus!"

I love Kirkman's Portrayal of JC. It's friggin' hilarious. Makes me upset that I didn't pick this up in its original incarnation. Glad they reprinted it!!

If you guys are reading it for the first time, you're in for a real treat. The book gets way better after the first story arc, with highlights being the Christmas story and Wrath of God.

Christmas story? Christmas story?
Oh yes. I'm going to enjoy that indeed.

I picked up #1 and it really didn't convince me to pick up the rest. :( At least I gave it a shot...

Am I the only one who is surprised by the fact that no one (christian groups) freaked out when Image published it again right after the death of JP II?

I think it was probably obscure enough to stay under the fundamental Christian radar. The first issue was even had an "in memory" to John Paul in the back.

I have seen some pretty obscure things get picked up by the fundemental christian radar, but I can understand this. I liked the pic of JP II in the back of #1.:D

99.9% of fundamentalist Christian groups are of protestant origin and therefore could not give two shits about the Pope. To the original Lutherans in the 16th century, the Pope was Antichrist himself.
+ this book has a readership of around 5000 people, and is available only in obscure shops shunned by fundamentalists in the first place.
I still think you should send a copy to Pat Robertson, however ;) :D

That's very true. I hadn't thought about it like that, but that's probably got a lot to do with why not a lot has been said about this.
And I think Pat Robertson would love a copy. ;)

most protastants still see the Pope as a major figurehead in their religion. And Battle Pope rawks. I managed to snag the original b/w trade for five bucks at SDCC last year.

Battle Pope is 'blasphemous' to be sure, but I think it is very clear that it is all in good fun. It is over the top, and I think even most people that are usually up in arms about this stuff would see it as ridiculous. (most of it anyway)
However, if there is one thing that I have learned, it is never to underestimate the religious right's ability to flip out over stuff that doesn't matter.
Oh, PS... I love Battle Pope. The colours are a nice addition.
