I finally finished this book today. It is, no joke, one of the greatest comics I have ever read.
I used to love the Disney comics and the Duck Tales show when I was a little kid, and I recently took a trip to Disney World on vacation. I picked this book up out of a combination of nostalgia and a newly rekindled interest in Disney characters. I wasn't expecting too much out of it; just a pleasant, family-friendly read, maybe a couple chuckles.
It's freaking awesome.
Everybody, READ THIS BOOK. It's like the "Watchmen" of Disney comics.

Is it a one-shot, or part of the ongoing 'Ducktales' series?

The trade paperback just came out recently. The story originally ran in 12 issues of the Gladstone Comics "Uncle Scrooge" series from the early 90's. The artist/writer is named Don Rosa.

I also just finished this book this past weekend. Great, great series. I have no Duck background, but I've heard of the quality of the Ducks comics and had been meaning to try them for a long time now. I still need to read some of Carl Barks work, but Don Rosa told a powerful, engaging and extremely adventurous story in "Life and Times."
I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys exciting adventure comics and top-notch cartooning.

Life and Times is indeed a great book.
I'd also recommend the monthly Uncle Scrooge comic.

Gemstone is great.
At the comics shop today I got a freebie mini-comic that stores are meant to give out at Halloween.
It's a classic Carl Barks Donald Duck Halloween story, and it's free. These guys are doing the Disney stuff right.

Marvel, Archie, and Gemstone have done Halloween comics like that for the last few years. They cost your retailer about 12 cents each, so the cost is shared between retailers and publishers.
