I am. I don't like it as much as Ultra, but its a pretty good read. Like any horror/sci-fi story, I'm worried because everything usually hinges on the strength of the conclusion. But since the Bros. Luna plan this for at least two years, thats still a ways off.

they've done a good job of making each month a bigger and bigger reveal without being corny or formulaic about it

how many issues did Ultra run for? (i could probably pick most of them up from my LCS)

It was Ultra not ultima.

I'm not really enjoying girls, i'm not sure why, the art is good but occasionly it seems to get like blurry and no it's not my copy. The writing is also kind of bizarre, I don't really care about any of the characters and couldn't really give a fck if any of them died. However saying that it's not bad, I guess it just wasn't what I thought it would be. If the next issue is good I will carry on collecting it, if it isn't I'm dropping it and picking up Jonah Hex.

Anyone else think this book is going no where really quickly?

It is interesting that the book is one cliffhanger after the next, however there is not much going on during the course of each issue. It essentially builds to the cliffhanger at the end of each issue.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this story is a short story strechted too long. Was it not a mini-series that was later changed to an ongoing series?

The story seems so watered down. I liked Ultra better.

I dropped the book a couple of issues ago.

Well, I am a firm member of the "Ultra was better" brigade -- hell, I loved it so much, it was so clean in its artwork, design, and storytelling, that I actually splurged on the deluxe HC! However, as I stated in an earlier thread, Girls on its own, while of lesser quality, is interesting enough and so well drawn that I am thoroughly enjoying it, and you can't quite say that ALL the action comes at the end of an issue: you also have to count the bridge breaking and giganto-sperm flagellum going nuts too! The biggest thing to bear in mind, in the end, is that it's true what spirit said: Los Bros Luna only initially planned on this being a six-issue mini, but Image loved the idea so much they greenlighted it to a two-year maxi, so you have to give the Lunas the benefit of the doubt in any wrinkles in pacing.

With that said, this is likely my last post of 2005, so Happy New Year, all!

I completely agree on all points... except, I've never checked out Ultra.  Since I love Girls, I guess I better get w/ the program and buy the Ultra HC :)

Thanks for the kindliness, Night! And, even if you only get the Ultra TPB, it'll be well worth it for you reading what's just a great, great story. :)

Heyya,

I really really enjoyed Ultra - and am reading Girls... I'm enjoying it, look forward to it each month, but I have the same feelings as you all... I sure hope it's going somewhere.

Another book, that if you like either of those 2 Luna books to check out is Josh Howard's (Dead@17 creator) BLACK HARVEST (http://www.devilsdue.net/blackharvest). It starts off sorta the same, strange girl, side of the road... but is very, very different. The girl has 'Repent' carved into her + has been missing for several years. Once the missing girl returns - strange things start happening... very X-Files feeling, or if you're watching Invasion.

Here are some reviews, in the words of Reading Rainbow - "Of course, you don't take my word for it..."

"Black Harvest is bursting at the seams with unpredictability! Overall grade = A+" - thecomicfanatic.com

"...cute girls and gratuitous violence." ~comicswait.blogspot.com

"Howard's style is in keeping with those of such artists as Bruce Timm, Darwyn Cooke and Mike Avon Oeming, all of which are popular in comics these days..." ~ TheFouthRail.com

"I think Josh has a real winner on his hands here. In his own words, it combines sci-fi, old religion, and horror in a unique and suprising way, and I can’t wait to read more. "*****" (five bullets/ stars)" ~silverbulletcomicbooks.com

"If you've been following the ABC series Invasion or checking out the Image book Girls , I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you might want to give Black Harvest #1 a chance."
~ TheFouthRail.com

"Is Black Harvest a tale of supernatural menace or superscientific, or some combination of both? I don't know yet, but I want to find out." ~ TheFouthRail.com

"DO NOT miss this issue! Howard has another HUGE hit on his hands and it starts right here! Miss this one at your own risk!" ~ thecomicfanatic.com

Girls is the very definition of Meh!

I loved Ultra, just felt like such a fresh voice, so I started buying Girls when it came out. The first issue was alright, but then it never went anywhere. I fell into a coma reading issue 4 and i haven't looked at it since. It would have had to have got a LOT better to have been worth one more go.

I don't know if we are all reading the same book.

While the pacing is a bit slow, Girls is really good because the main character could be you. He wants to do the right thing, he tries really hard, but he sometimes he fails, even when he doesnt mean to. His girl broke his heart, he gets drunk and speaks the non-PC truth out loud. So he gets pummelled. On his way home he meets a beautiful stranger who takes an interest in him and he gives in while he is at his lowest point.

He has been trying to live down his actions in issue one and two, and the sad thing is, all he did was have a one night stand and now he is being hung out to dry by the rest of the town. Most of these characters are hippocrital, espically the women. I think this is one of the main themes of the series as each woman in the scene seems to represent a specific typical woman sterotype. I have a theory that the author has been in a number of bad relationships and he is writing some of his experiences into the book.

I am really enjoying the series because you never know where its going to go and its really down to earth considering the subject matter.

Actually, to me, the weird hair and the lips threw me...but then, when I did reread everything last night, I saw that in one scene, the reverend was hugging a black woman whom I don't think I really spotted do that much major in the series otherwise. Dude still looks like a lady, but I think EG correctly called me out on this.

I started out liking this series, but it steadily declines for me each month. The simplest way to say it is that nothing is happening. Sure issue nine had a few developments, but none of them that actually forwarded the story as a whole or revealed any of the mystery. I have a problem caring about any of these characters, I actually find myself wishing that most of them would die, and sooner rather than later. This is one slow read.

Artistically I have trouble telling who most of most of the characters are. Facially they all look very similar, and yes I agree with some of you in that many of the men look like women. I think the coloring is what makes the art in this book. The colorin is amazing.

At first I thought maybe it was just me not likng this book, but my wife is reading it also and she is also bored by it. We both agreed that we will stay until issue twelve to see if it gets any better and then we are done.

i agree with posters that the book is gorgeous looking but it's padded to high hell and the characterization is shoddy and kinda cookie-cutter. i dropped it after i realized i didn't care about any of these people and each issue seems exactly the same as the last. maybe a character legend [ala WALKING DEAD] would help but i'm over it.

I have to say I am still loving this series. It is not an action piece but that dosn't mean nothing happens. It is a sci-fi mystery tale above anything else, I think. I am still intrigued
