The Goon kicks the pants off of every other comic on the market.

Eric Powell is in fact "The Man".

Discuss.

Well, there's not much to discuss since you said it all in just two sentances. ;)
I only have two little gripes about the title: 1. The wait between issues is killin' me! In a perfect world The Goon would be a monthly book, but I suspect that the time involved is wat makes the book so damn good. There can be too much of a good thing. 2. I want a Goon poster, dammit! They've done a lot of merchandising lately and still no posters! GAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Is it really good? I mean, Wizard usually praises series for all the wrong reasons... before that, the Comics Journal did a comment on the series and they seem not to like it much for all the wrong reasons too... I'm on the fence. I love the art, though.

Well, if it's any help it won Eisners for both Best Ongoing Series of 2005 and Best Humor Publication of 2005.

Yeah, it's THAT good. Absolutely hilarious, but deep and rich at the same time. Powell can do it all.

READ THE GOON.

Huzzah!

In other news, did anyone read the latest issue?

Thoughts?

I thought the Lagarto story was pretty awesome. Absolute silliness.

The Buzzard coming back and the origin of the Zombie Priest was also quite interesting as well. . .

Dig it. Goon has all the wit and character so many books are missing. There just isn't another book that does atmosphere like Goon.

That being said, my only concern is what direction it is going to go in. Take Hellboy for example. Every story is inevitably going to end with Hellboy punching, stabbing, or shooting a squid-like worm thing. But I can't enough, still! It is the underlying story threads, mythologies, tie-ins that keep me comin' (and a bit of the Hellboy humor). I'm worried that Goon doesn't have enough story thread.

I do have a great deal of faith in Powell...and I worry because I would miss this book a great deal if it didn't work out.

Love it. I met Powell at San Diego. He seemed to be a pretty calm guy. I was expecting a maniac. I love the self-contained single issues as opposed to the story arcs.

You guys might have seen this in the back of the latest issue, but Mezco is making Goon figures, and I gotta say. They're awesome!

I'll be getting Goon, Frankie and the Zombie Priest. Kind of odd that they went back to the Rough Stuff and made a Joey the Ball figure.

I'd rather see Dr. Alloy, a Mud Brudda (or both!), Fishy Pete, Spider, anybody!

It's a reprint of the first issue with a brand new story!

I've never read it, but have heard great things.

So I just ordered the first TPB.
Looking forward to reading it.

If you aren't reading the Goon right now, you hate comics.

I've not read it yet.

I was planning on picking up the trade but I have Preacher and Transmet on the "To-Buy" list before it.

So tell me, should I bump it to number one?

Yes. On a personal level, it's what cemented me into buying comics.

Gotta trust a fellow Canuck!

It shall be done, Preacher and Transmet can wait some more.

Thanks :D

Oh, the trades 0 and one (Nothin' but Misery and Ruff Stuff are his earlier works, you might want to try trades 2 and beyond that)

The trades 0 and 1 are the really indepentant days and it's really interesting to see his...umm, well evolution. For instance he has a talking chainsaw in one and a midget that had a bowling ball on one arm since birth in another.

For sure. Consider them essential reading.

Hey BT, on YOUR recommendation, I picked up the 25 cent issue over the weekend. Even grabbed the last copy off the shelf.

I loved it! Really funny stuff. Loved the zombies singing... :)

I'm eyeing tpb #0 in eBay right now, can't wait to read more Goon.

Will stick to the trades though...

I'd definitely recommend Volumes 1-3 to start with. Volume 0 is interesting on a fundamental level because you see Powell's first attemots on the series, but it's just not quite as good as when he finally got the style down and ran with it.

Volume 0 does have the first appearance of Fishy Pete though.
