The Lord of the Monkeys is a Marvel Zombie. I admit it. Deal with it. HOWEVER! Well, just read this...

Man, I gotta tell you all... The DC silver age was dumb, silly, and just at times nonsensical. Yet, because the Lord of the Monkeys loves his Hal Jordan, he bought this book. And he just read it all the way through, and a surprising thing happened...

HE EFFING LOVED IT! Stupid, Dumb, nonsense... BUT FUN! And for ten bucks! I cannot WAIT for the Superman, the eventual Batman, the JLA.... BUY THESE! NOW!

I went to the downtown Bedrock City today in hopes of scoring the Superman Showcase. They didn't have it. Weep for me.

Same happened to me. Apparently, my LCS got misprinted copies, with replacements in the next two weeks...

My post should have said GL and Superman. Misprintings weren't the problem here. They said they sold out. I wish I could've gotten down there sooner, but the Bedrock by my apartment told me they didn't come out for like a month. Silver-Age DC is the best thing going. It's a much more entertaining read and the art is much better as well.

It would have been nice if Gil Kane was still around. This reprint really shows why he is the definitive Green Lantern artist.

There is no question that DC's Silver Age was technically far superior to Marvel. The craftsmanship was the best in the business. Many SA Marvel comics looked rough and rushed.

The stories, however, were written for kids around the age of 12 (but readable to those a few years younger). They were also written for the casual readership of the day, thus all the reminders about powers, etc.

Once you get past the limitations the creators were under, there are some fascinating characters and stories being told.

I think that's a major problem for younger readers today. They're used to stories being writted for them, so they're totally unaccustomed to reading between the lines--to sifting away the kid stuff to get to the really interesting issues that writers like Broome wanted to talk about.

(That said, I wouldn't apply the above to the Superman volume. Those stories were from 1958, a bit before anyone realized there was a new "age" of comics on the horizon. The Superman stories are quite goofy, in a fun sorta way.)

These showcase books are great-and the quality of the paper is far superior than other phone book sized collections.
I got the gl one, but my lcs did not get any superman ones.

I can't wait for more!

My store, the largest (of five) in a city of 350,000 only ordered in 2 of each book, and I took one of each. I know one issue he's worried about is that the Essentials already take up a disproportionately high amount of space amongst the trades.

I wish Metamorpho wasn't coming out just yet. 3 in two weeks is a little too much for me to read!!

I plan to pick up METAMORPHO sight unseen this week. Silver Age goodness...

I'm not planning on picking up GL or Metamorpho, but I'm getting Superman, and CAN. NOT. WAIT. for Jonah Hex. That volume will be the definition of Awesome.

I've got the GL one and have been reading through it little by little. It's just good Silver Age style fun. Big ideas, limited characterization and early '60s style. In my head, I can't help but hear the voice of the narrator from the old Filmation DC superheroes cartoons when I read the captions.

I'm not sure about Superman, Justice League of America or Metamorpho, but I am seriously considering picking up Jonah Hex because I've been really getting into reading the more genre-specific stuff Marvel's been putting in Essentials. I'm not even a fan of westerns.

I'm splitting time between "Anansi Boys" and the GL/Supes volumes...good times, wacky stories...gotta love it!

Can't wait to grab another one tomorrow. :)

What's the scoop on Hex? I used to come across it as a kid, but never read it b/c it was a western. Are there supernatural elements like the Vertigo minis?

What a coincidence. I was doing the same thing. Reading a little Anansi Boys here, then Showcase Green Lantern there.

Finally finished Anansi a couple days ago, still only a little over half-way through the Showcase though.

Replace "casual" with 'new' and I agree 100%

I travel and sit on plans and in terminals for hours each week.

Reading Showcase gewts me a couple looks from passerbys or row mates - but who cares! It's a great read!

If there are supernatural elements, they're minimal in the original Hex stories.

I'm really looking forward to the volume as well. Hex may be DC's first anti-hero, with the possible exception of Enemy Ace, and was heavily influenced by the Sergio Leonne "spaghetti westerns". Hex being an ugly, scarred, ex-confederate bounty hunter was certainly a departure from the norm for DC. And a departure from most previous western heroes. Bat Lash is obviously inspired by Maverick. And most of the 50s western heroes, could fit in on Gunsmoke with little problem. Hex certainly stood out from the crowd and I've heard good things about the writing and art beyond the general concept.

I hope so, since the new one looks awesome and I'd like to read the original material.

Luke Ross's art looks really good, each issue is also a self contained story, at least that's what I heard.
